Yu-Gi-Oh! TCG Strategy Articles » The Dark Magician!

The Yu-Gi-Oh! Legendary Collection includes six of the most popular Monster Cards from the original Yu-Gi-Oh! animated series. It’s no surprise that one of those six monsters is Yugi’s star Spellcaster, the Dark Magician. The Dark Magician made lots of appearances throughout the series and was crucial for driving the plot. These appearances include the first episode ever, in which Yugi Duels Kaiba, as well as the last episode, where Yugi takes on the Pharaoh.

The Dark Magician always remained faithful to Yugi and the Pharaoh. He got them out of many tight spots and won them lots of Duels. What better way is there to honor his loyalty than by building a Dark Magician Deck?

Dark Magic Attack!!

The Dark Magician has some awesome cards that make it easier to Summon. Since the Dark Magician is a Level 7 monster that requires 2 Tributes to Normal Summon it, it can sometimes be tricky to use.

Every master of the Dark Magician knows the importance of being able to Summon it quickly and easily. Arkana (Marik’s Rare Hunter who uses a Dark Magician Deck) and Yugi both use a bunch of tricks to help bring the Dark Magician onto the field. None are swifter than the Dark Magic Curtain. Dark Magic Curtain is a Normal Spell Card that lets you pay half of your Life Points to Special Summon a Dark Magician from your Deck. Very few cards can Summon a 2500 ATK monster by activating a single Spell Card. This makes Dark Magic Curtain one of the strongest tricks in a magician’s bag.

But Dark Magic Curtain isn’t the only Spell Card that can Summon the Dark Magician from your Deck. Sage’s Stone lets you Special Summon a Dark Magician from your Deck as long as you have a Dark Magician Girl on your side of the field. Since Dark Magician Girl is a Level 6 Spellcaster with 2000 ATK, it can be easier to Summon than the Dark Magician. You can Special Summon it from your Deck with Magician’s Circle whenever a Spellcaster-Type monster attacks, or you can Normal Summon it by Tributing just 1 monster. Dark Magician Girl also gains 300 ATK for every Dark Magician in your Graveyard.

There are also lots of other ways to Summon your strongest Spellcasters. Skilled Dark Magician and Magical Exemplar gain Spell Counters every time a Spell Card is activated. They let you use those Spell Counters to Summon the Dark Magician or a supporting Spellcaster. With 1900 ATK and 1700 ATK respectively, Skilled Dark Magician and Magical Exemplar can hold their own in battle, even if you don’t have any Spell Cards to get their effects going.

You can also use Magical Dimension to Summon your best Spellcasters. Magical Dimension is a Quick-Play Spell Card that lets you Tribute a monster and Special Summon a Spellcaster from your hand. Then, you can destroy an opponent’s monster. Not a bad way to replace your opponent’s monster with your own Dark Magician!

Some Dark Magician Decks may rely on Spell Counters.

These are just a few of the cards that can be used to Special Summon the Dark Magician!

Once you have your Dark Magician on the field, you can use some Spell Cards that would be impossible to activate otherwise. Thousand Knives lets you destroy an opponent’s monster, and Dark Magic Attack lets you destroy all of your opponent’s Spell and Trap Cards. Diffusion-Wave Motion lets one of your monsters attack every monster your opponent has on the field, but can only be used with a Level 7 or higher Spellcaster like the Dark Magician.

Be careful when using these cards in your Deck. If you can’t consistently Summon the Dark Magician right away, you won’t be able to use these cards when you draw them. It’s a lot easier to get any Spellcaster-Type monster on the field than it is to Summon the Dark Magician, so you may be better off using cards that help any Spellcaster, like Secret Village of the Spellcasters.

There are many different ways you can build a Dark Magician Deck. For example, you can play cards like Magical Citadel of Endymion, Apprentice Magician, and Alchemist of Black Spells to stock up on Spell Counters. Then, you can use those Spell Counters to Special Summon the Dark Magician with cards like Miracle Restoring and Magical Exemplar. This approach also lets you take advantage of other awesome monsters that absorb Spell Counters, like Breaker the Magical Warrior, Defender, the Magical Knight, and Arcanite Magician.

You can build a Dark Magician Deck any way you’d like. As long as you Duel with honor and trust in the heart of the cards, you’ll make Yugi proud!
