Writing blog posts

After you’ve created a blog, you can start writing your blog posts. Your posts can contain both text and images. You can choose to publish a post immediately, or else set a specific publishing date.
Add a post to your blog
Steps:

From your Shopify admin, click Settings > Apps and sales channels.

From the Apps and sales channels page, click Online store.

Click Open sales channel.

Click Blog Posts.

Click Add blog post.
- From the Shopify app, tap Store.
- In the Sales channels section, tap Online Store.
- Tap Blog posts.
- Tap the
+
button.
- From the Shopify app, tap Store.
- In the Sales channels section, tap Online Store.
- Tap Blog posts.
- Tap the
+
button.
- On the Add blog post page, enter a title for your blog post. You need to have a title to save the post.
- Enter the blog post content. This field uses the rich text editor, so you can format your post content. You can also add an image, embed a video or other media, or insert a link.
- Choose the settings for your blog post:
- Author: From the drop-down menu, select the name of the person writing the post. Only the names of the store owner and staff appear in the drop-down menu.
- Blog: Select the name of the blog where the post will be published. If you don’t want to publish to one of your existing blogs, then you can create a new blog in the drop-down menu.
- Optional: Display an image on the blog landing page. Click Upload image in the Featured image section, and then select an image to upload.
- Optional: Include an excerpt from your blog post on the blog landing page.
- Optional: Add tags to your blog posts to organize them by category or subject. Customers can click tags to find other blog posts in the same category. When a customer searches for a tag in your online store, matching blog posts will appear in the search results. Enter tags, separated by commas, in the Tags field. Tags can have up to 255 characters.
- Optional: If you have created a custom template for blog posts, then you can select a template. In the Template drop-down menu, select the template that you want to use for the post.
- Optional: Edit the search engine listing for your blog post in the Search engine listing preview section.
- Blog posts are hidden by default and won’t appear on your online store. If you’re ready to publish the post, then select Visible in the Visibility section, or set a specific publishing date for the post. You can edit or delete a published blog post at any time.
- Click Save.
Edit a blog post
You might want to edit an existing blog post to change the content, publish date, author, or other blog post details.
Steps:
- From your Shopify admin, go to Online Store > Blog Posts.
- From the Shopify app, tap Store.
- In the Sales channels section, tap Online Store.
- Tap Blog posts.
- From the Shopify app, tap Store.
- In the Sales channels section, tap Online Store.
- Tap Blog posts.

Click the title of the post you want to edit.

Make your changes to the existing content and settings.

Click Save.
Hide a blog post
Steps:
- From your Shopify admin, go to Online Store > Blog Posts.
- From the Shopify app, tap Store.
- In the Sales channels section, tap Online Store.
- Tap Blog posts.
- From the Shopify app, tap Store.
- In the Sales channels section, tap Online Store.
- Tap Blog posts.

Click the blog post that you want to hide.

In the Visibility section, select Hidden.

Click Save.
Tip
You can set a specific publishing date for a blog post.
Delete a blog post
Steps:

From your Shopify admin, click Settings > Apps and sales channels.

From the Apps and sales channels page, click Online store.

Click Open sales channel.

Click Blog Posts.
-
Click the blog post that you want to delete.

From the blog post’s information page, click Delete blog post.

In the confirmation dialog, click Delete blog post.

From the Shopify app, tap Store.

In the Sales channels section, tap Online Store.

Tap Blog posts.

Tap the blog post that you want to delete.

Tap the
...
button, and then select Delete blog post.

From the Shopify app, tap Store.

In the Sales channels section, tap Online Store.

Tap Blog posts.

Tap the blog post that you want to delete.

Tap the
⋮
button, and then select Delete blog post.
Add an image to a blog post
Adding images into your blog post content can make the post more engaging. You can add images that you’ve uploaded to Shopify, including product images, or upload a new image for the post. The best file type for blog post images is JPEG.
Steps:
- From your Shopify admin, go to Online Store > Blog Posts.
- From the Shopify app, tap Store.
- In the Sales channels section, tap Online Store.
- Tap Blog posts.
- From the Shopify app, tap Store.
- In the Sales channels section, tap Online Store.
- Tap Blog posts.

Create a new blog post, or select an existing blog post.

In the Content area, click the image button.

Select the image to use in the blog post, or click Upload file to upload a new image to Shopify.

Select the size of the image from the Size drop-down menu.

Click Insert image.
Tip
You can use the rich text editor to embed other media in your blog posts, including videos, Google maps, and music or sound clips. Learn more about adding media with the rich text editor.
Display an excerpt from a blog post
You can display excerpts from a blog post on the blog landing page. Depending on what your theme supports, you might be able to include images, text formatting, and links in your excerpt. If you don’t add a blog excerpt, then part of your blog post content will display instead, without any images, formatting, or links included.
Steps:
- From your Shopify admin, go to Online Store > Blog Posts.
- From the Shopify app, tap Store.
- In the Sales channels section, tap Online Store.
- Tap Blog posts.
- From the Shopify app, tap Store.
- In the Sales channels section, tap Online Store.
- Tap Blog posts.

Select one of your blog posts.

Under the rich text editor, click Add excerpt.

In the Excerpt rich text editor, add the content that you want to appear on your blog’s landing page as an excerpt. The whole excerpt will be shown on your blog page, with a Read more link below.

Click Save.
You can use tags to organize your blog posts into categories or by subject. For example, you could add a tag to all the posts about summer to create a summer
category. Customers can click tags to find other blog posts in the same category. When a customer searches for a tag in your online store, matching blog posts will appear in the search results.
To add tags to a blog post:
- From your Shopify admin, go to Online Store > Blog Posts.
- From the Shopify app, tap Store.
- In the Sales channels section, tap Online Store.
- Tap Blog posts.
- From the Shopify app, tap Store.
- In the Sales channels section, tap Online Store.
- Tap Blog posts.

Click the name of the blog post.

In the Tags field, enter tags, separated by commas. You can also select existing tags.

Click Save.
Edit the search engine listing for a blog post
You can edit the text that appears in search engine results for a blog post. Descriptive titles and descriptions can help new customers find your online store and convince them to click the link. Learn more about search engine optimization.
You can preview a blog post’s search engine listing and make changes to help new customers discover your online store.
Steps:
- From your Shopify admin, go to Online Store > Blog Posts.
- From the Shopify app, tap Store.
- In the Sales channels section, tap Online Store.
- Tap Blog posts.
- From the Shopify app, tap Store.
- In the Sales channels section, tap Online Store.
- Tap Blog posts.

Click the name of the blog post to edit.

In the Search engine listing preview section, click Edit website SEO.

In the Page title field, enter a descriptive title. This title will display as a link in search engine results. You can enter up to 55 characters in the title.

Enter a description for the search engine listing. Make sure to include relevant keywords to help new customers find your link, and to include your business name. You can enter up to 320 characters in the description.
Note
The page title and meta description have set character limits. If you enter more text beyond the character limit, then your page title and description will be shortened in search engine results. Learn more about search engine optimization.

In the URL and handle section, you can edit the web address. In most cases, you won’t need to make changes to the web address. If you do make changes, then make sure that you set up URL redirects from the old web address. The URL can’t contain any spaces. Handles are used in theme design.

Click Save.
Change a blog’s web address
You can change the web address of your blog post in the Search engine listing preview section. When you create a blog post, a URL and handle are automatically generated. You might want to change or shorten the web address, but in most cases you can leave the default alone.
Steps:

Click Edit website SEO to open the Search engine listing preview.

In the Search engine listing preview, edit the URL and handle field.

If you want the old blog post URL to redirect customers to the new URL, then leave the option for redirect checked.

Click Save.
