Born Ralph Lifshitz in The Bronx, New York in 1939, the founder of Polo Ralph Lauren later changed his last name to Lauren. In 1969 he launched a line of men’s ties under the name Polo Ralph Lauren and signed a contract to sell them within Bloomingdale’s in Manhattan.
By the early 70s, Polo Ralph Lauren introduced women’s apparel and the Polo emblem, characteristic of the brand, was born. The polo rider and horse was stitched on the cuff of the suits.
In 1981, Ralph Lauren opened a store on New Bond Street, London, and its international expansion started. Today, Ralph Lauren is a multinational company producing a variety of brands, from clothing to accessories, fragrances, home décor and furniture.
Fashion designer Ralph Lauren began his career as a clothing salesman in New York. By 1967, he had grown tired of selling ties made by other manufacturers and decided to design his own line. He started distributing these ties via small menswear stores, and then eventually began selling them at Bloomingdale’s. Within just a year, Lauren was able to get some seed money from another major Manhattan clothing company, and he officially founded Polo Fashions, Inc. The new business soon expanded its product line to include suits, shirts, and sportswear.
The Polo brand really hit its stride during the 1980s–often known as the “”decade of Ralph Lauren.”” The company embodied sophistication without stuffiness or flamboyance, and it carved out a niche for itself among upper-middle class Americans. Having introduced its own take on the polo shirt in the 1970s, the brand cultivated a line that exuded a similar casual elegance. In 1987, the company name was officially changed to the Polo Ralph Lauren Corporation (“”Polo”” would eventually be dropped from the moniker once the manufacturer started introducing other lines). Today, Polo Ralph Lauren remains one of the company’s most popular sub-brands. Clothes are sold at more than 600 Ralph Lauren stores around the world.

Swap.com’s Rating of Polo by Ralph Lauren
Classic American looks, made with high quality fabrics in stylish and timeless designs is what comes to mind when we think of Ralph Lauren Children’s wear.
The company does timeless high style clothing for little one like few others can. We love the classic look of its pure cotton layette for babies, the sweet dresses in pastel colors for spring, or the stronger, bolder colors for the winter months. The boys’ Ralph Lauren shirts are a staple that can be passed along and used for years to come without losing any of their style or fashion relevance.
But Ralph Lauren is much more than a great clothing retailer, the Polo Ralph Lauren Foundation supports a variety of initiatives to support charitable organizations and events. In the fight against cancer, the company has several programs in place, such as The Ralph Lauren Center for Cancer and Prevention that provides cancer treatment and screening for underserved communities or its Pink Pony Campaign, a worldwide initiative that donates its proceeds to fight cancer.
In support of communities, the Polo Ralph Lauren Foundation also provides college scholarships to children of victims of the 9-11 terrorists attacks and its employees volunteer for Habitat for Humanity and other nonprofit, community-based programs.
For its amazing clothes, great designs, quality and humanitarian efforts, we give Ralph Lauren 5 stars out of 5.

Swap.com’s Rating of Polo by Ralph Lauren
Though Polo Ralph Lauren may have hit its peak back in the 1980s, it continues to be an extremely popular brand today among a wide range of consumers. Styles still tend to be preppier and a little more formal, but the manufacturer also ventures into casualwear and fashion apparel to appeal to people with all different tastes. The brand isn’t known for being particularly affordable–most styles are priced above $100–but you may be able to score a great deal when you shop for products via consignment. We give Polo Ralph Lauren 5 stars out of 5.
