How To Choose The Best Hostels In Hanoi
There is a freakin huge assortment of hostels to choose from in Hanoi. Like honestly it is probably a bit ridiculous. Though in all honesty wadding through all of them to find something decent can take ages and may just drive you a bit crazy. I mean if you are a chill person you definitely don’t want to book in at a party hostel, or if you are traveling solo you will want to stay somewhere that is social and organizes activities.
The older, and perhaps wiser, I get the more of a glampacker travel style I begin to develop and there are plenty of bougie hostels in Hanoi that cater for this. Sure, you can’t go wrong with the old-school wooden-style bunk beds. Though there are plenty of affordable and modern hostels here so there is honestly no reason to stay somewhere substandard.
So when choosing the best hostels in Hanoi, some things I took into account are:
Price
You will find an assortment of super affordable hostels in Hanoi, and most of Southeast Asia if I’m being honest. Though here in Hanoi is the best value-for-money hostels I have ever experienced anywhere on the planet. If you are just looking for somewhere basic to lay your head then prices can be found as low as $5.00. Though if you were to increase your budget slightly you will be able to find a comfortable bed in a hostel with a great social atmosphere and amenities.
Therefore I recommend budgeting $10.00 for a hostel in Hanoi per night. This will allow you to stay somewhere decent to sleep, with modern facilities, and perhaps even with a pool! Though if you are looking for a private room then you will need to increase your budget to approximately $20.00 per night. Though if you have a friend to split a double room with then again, that is only $10.00 per night each!
Location
When you are traveling in Hanoi you will want to stay in the city center with easy access to plenty of delicious restaurants, good accommodation choices, and near to all the sights. Honestly looking at a map it can be hard to tell where exactly to stay as accommodation options can be quite spread out, and this is a freakin huge city.
The area of Hoan Kiem, or The Old Quarter, is the best part of Hanoi for travelers to stay in, especially if this is your first trip. It is full of culture with temples, old gates, small alleys, and traditional shops, making it a picture-perfect spot. This is the most popular spot to stay for travelers and it’s easy to see why.
Personally, I judge where to stay by its proximity to Hoan Kiem Lake. This is essentially smack bang in the heart of the tourist area where the majority of travelers stay.
Amenities
As I have already said a couple of times the hostels in Hanoi are incredible value for money. I would have to say the best value for money that I have ever experienced.
There are such a huge variety of hostels in Hanoi it will be hard to find one that doesn’t tick all of your boxes. Booking a hostel with free breakfast and water will help save a little bit extra each day. Some hostels even include free coffee and tea! Oh and a popular thing here is happy hour, where hostels offer free beers for an hour or two. Seriously I don’t know how they make any money.
Quite a few of the hostels on this list organize events and have an excellent social scene. Perfect if you’re wanting to meet other travelers! Whether that is at the aforementioned happy hour, a walking tour, or even hostel tours to other popular parts of the country.
One thing to be aware of is depending on the time of year you visit Hanoi you actually may find that it is quite chilly. This means you will want to book a dorm room with a decent duvet and blanket to keep you warm overnight. You definitely won’t want just a plain sheet like you commonly find elsewhere in Southeast Asia.
