There is something exceptional about baking your very own bread. From sourdough, and challa to sandwich bread and baguettes – it’s all wonderful. One of the issues with baking your own bread, whatever the type, is the slicing. Getting nice and even slices can be a challenge. Overcoming this challenge, however, is fairly straightforward, with the right tools.
Here we’re going to cover a range of options, from the tried and true traditional to a little less labor-intensive and mechanical. So, whether you’re looking for day-to-day home use or otherwise, read on as I dive into how to make your bread-slicing forays easier than you thought possible.
But first let me answer the most important question? Which is the best bread slicer around? the answer is The SuperHandy bread slicer. No competition. Its versatile, giving you various types of slicing needs from bread to deli, meat, and even (hard) cheese. It’s also collapsible, making it easier to store. It is my personal favorite. I’m a little biased here, as I actually inherited the SuperHandy bread slicer 10 years ago, after it had been in the family for 20 years already, and still have it. That’s right, it’s still kicking, so well worth it in my books.

My Bread Slicer Recommendations

Now, on with the show, and here are my recommendations for bread slicers.
Mama’s Great Bamboo Bread Slicer for Homemade Bread
If you’re a bit of a perfectionist and looking for a manual yet versatile bread slicer that is able to accommodate various types of bread while giving you consistently even slices this has your name written all over it.
The Mama’s Great Bamboo Bread Slicer for Homemade Bread – Adjustable Slice Width Bread Slicing Guides with Sturdy Wooden Cutting Board – Compact & Foldable – Makes Cutting Bagels or Even Bread Slices Easy is an excellent option, particularly if your loaves vary in size and you’re looking more for a guide, rather than a machine to do it for you.

This bread slicer is skillfully compact, with all of its components fitting into a sleek and stylish box the size of a large cereal box. When being used, the Mama’s Great Bamboo Bread Slicer for Homemade Bread can accommodate bread loaves as tall as 8.7” (20.1cm) and three width options the most narrow being 3.3” (8.38 cm), then 4.6” (11.68 cm) and up to 5.9” (15 cm) wide. This bread slider gives the choice of two thicknesses – ⅓” and ½”, and offers slicing options to accommodate a variety of bread types, including a couple of pieces that accommodate bagels.
In terms of any downsides, I suppose, is its lack of versatility – being that it’s mainly for bread, but could also be used to cut some fruits and veggies. It’s also possible, that for some people, the physical exertion required might be unappealing or burdensome. Aside from those two fairly minor points, it’s a great little contraption.
Overall if you aren’t looking for anything fancy, but want evenly sliced bread, the “Mama’s Great Bamboo Bread Slicer for Homemade Bread” is a great fit. This bread slicer is a simple solution to your bread slicing needs such as:
- Well-rounded options in height, width, and slice thickness
- Accocomodate several types of bread
- Evenly sliced bread
- Compact and easy-to-store unit
- Sleek and stylish look
The upshot is that it’s a cute and efficient way to get evenly sliced bread without breaking the bank, or adding another piece of equipment to your kitchen repertoire.
SuperHandy Electric Meat Slicer
If you’re interested in a bread slicer that has a little more versatility, with more options and little to no effort on your part then the SuperHandy Meat Slicer Electric Food Deli Bread Cheese Portable Collapsible 6.7″ inch Stainless Steel RSG Solingen Blade is what you’re looking for.
This is a great gadget and not only does it give you options, in terms of meeting any and all of your slicing needs, from various types of bread to deli, meat, and even (hard) cheese – it’s collapsible, making it easier to store.
Product SpecsSize4.8″ L x 1.6″ W x 3.1″ H (12.19 cm L x4.06 cm W x 7.87 cm H)Power120VAC 60Hz 100 Watt gear transmission motorBladeRemovable 6.7″ (17.18 cm) circular stainless steel German forged serrated bladeStorageFoldable and compact at 12” L x 4” W x 8” D (31.3 cm L x 10.5 cm W x 20.5 cm D) making it easier to store and transport.Other UsesCan slice deli as thin as ⅘” thin as well as a variety of types of meat, hard cheeses, and firm vegetables.ValueEconomical at less than $100
If you aren’t looking to spend a lot of money, but want a more “professional” slice of your bread, this machine is a great option. The SuperHandy Electric Meat Slicer is great for slicing bread. You can choose the width of the slice yourself, and also decide in the middle of the spread that you want slices of a different width for different purposes and change it on the go from thick to thin.
The fact that it’s collapsible is a big bonus for me. The countertop in the kitchen can often times be full of clutter (coffee machine, toaster and what not) so the fact that this bread slicer folds easily and can be stored in a drawer out of site is very significant. After all, we don’t slice bread all day long. Right?
However, when upping the mechanization of your game, there are often a few drawbacks. In this case, there are a couple, but they aren’t necessarily deal breakers. For example, when it comes to slicing bread, there are going to be a lot of crumbs, especially if you’re slicing crusty bread. This machine has a few nooks and crannies that can make the clean freak in you a little nervous, but nothing a little time and patience can’t solve (I just clean it over the sink) . Also, part of the motor and blade upkeep includes only using it for 5 minutes maximum, followed by a 15-minute rest before its next use. This can obviously be frustrating if you have a lot of slicing to do. If you’re just slicing a loaf of bread, like most households so, chances are you don’t need more than 5 minutes.
Using a bread slicer like the SuperHandy Electric Meat Slicer makes bread slicing super easy – a dream almost. It’s easy and safe to use (the food pusher helps a lot here!). Overall, this is a nice little machine to have in your home, especially if you like your bread sliced consistently and even, from thick to thin.
CUSIMAX Electric Deli Food Slicer
Electric meat slicers are great because they get the job done quickly and efficiently. If you’re looking for something a little more sturdy and professional, then the Meat Slicer, CUSIMAX Electric Deli Food Slicer with Two 7.5’Removable Stainless Steel Blades and Pusher, Cheese Fruit Vegetable Bread Cutter, Adjustable Knob for Thickness, Food Carriage might be a little more intriguing to you.
Product SpecsSize11.8″ L x 9″ W x 10.2″ H (30 cm L x 23 cm W x 26cm D) and 9lbs (4kg)Power120V 60Hz 200 Watt gear transmission motorBlade7.5” (19 cm) non-serrated, removable and stainless steel blade.StorageBulkier and takes up more storage spaceOther UsesUsed for slicing raw meat, deli meat, vegetables, cheese, and fruitValueLess than $150
This machine is a handy little piece of equipment to house in your kitchen, giving you a fair amount of versatility with a much stronger motor, though it cannot be used for more than 10 minutes at a time and should not be used on frozen meat or bones.
In addition, it’s pretty easy to clean and keeps safety in mind. The blade is removable for efficient cleaning of the blade itself as well as the rest of the unit. The bottom of the Cusimax Meat Slicer has suction cups to help keep it in place while you’re using it, ensuring it doesn’t move around and keeping the work space safe.
Again, when upping with mechanization, as many upsides as there are you encounter a few downsides. With Cusimax Meat Slicer, you lose storage space – it isn’t compact and doesn’t fold. If, however, you keep things like a crock pot or breadmaker amongst your kitchen gadgets, this is about the same size – so not bigger than a regularly occurring large(ish) kitchen appliance.
By paying just a little bit more, the Cusimax Meat Slicer gives you a little more bang – a stronger motor, a slightly longer use time, and a sleek and solid-looking piece of machinery. Altogether a great tool to have.
Elite Gourmet Professional Cordless Rechargeable Easy-Slice Electric Knife
My last, and least favorite recommendation to ease your bread-slicing needs is an electric bread knife. I want to say, though, that I really don’t recommend using an electric bread knife when slicing bread. Electric knives tend to shake a lot, and that can be really uncomfortable, making them hard to use for prolonged periods of time. Not only that, it’s hard to get straight and even slices because you’re relying on the human ability to hold a vibrating knife straight – which likely varies from person to person, but still.
If I haven’t convinced you not to buy an electric knife, and you really, really want one then I recommend the Elite Gourmet EK9810 Professional Cordless Rechargeable Easy-Slice Electric Knife with 4 Serrated Blades and Safety Lock Trigger Release, Carving Meats, Poultry, Bread, Black. Its dual-action slicing gives you the ability to get straight and even slices of bread more often.
Product SpecsSize1.83 lbs (830g)PowerRechargeable electric motorBlade4 Stainless steel serrated bladesStorageRequires separate purchase of a container/boxOther UsesGreat for slicing meats and vegetables.ValueAround $50
What makes this particular electric bread knife pretty great is that it’s cordless – giving you the freedom and mobility to use it wherever you want. It also recharges quickly, taking only an hour and a half to charge for a 70-minute usage time. Its lightweight design allows you to easily use it without your hand, wrist, or arm getting tired.
The Elite Gourmet Professional Cordless Rechargeable Easy-Slice Electric Knife uses two oscillation serrated blades to slice, making the task of precision cuts easier than they would otherwise be.
It is fairly compact, it doesn’t come with a storage case. Its price point, however, is low enough that springing a few extra dollars for a container or bag to store it in, and your problem is solved without breaking the bank.
While it’s a nifty tool to have in your kitchen, it doesn’t really have much of an edge over a simple serrated bread knife. For a lot of people, the vibration as well as its weight can be a bit bothersome, especially if you have small hands.
The Gist of My Bread Slicer Recommendations
If you’re baking a lot of bread, and are looking for nice, straight and even slices of bread, then getting some sort of bread slicer is something you will benefit from. The simplicity of Mama’s Great Bamboom Bread Slicer, and that you only need the addition of your own bread knife, is pretty great. Doesn’t take up a lot of space, and provides beautiful results.
If, on the other hand, you’re looking to slice lots and lots of bread, and want to get the job of slicing your loaf up quickly, then an electric bread slicer is more your tool. Whether you’re looking for something compact and easy to use, or something with a little more “oomph” – both the SuperHandy Meat Slicer and the CUSIMAX Electric Slicer are great machines to have in your kitchen.
While it doesn’t really beat the tried and true serrated bread knife if you’re hankering for an electric bread knife then the Elite Gourmet Easy-Slice Electric Knife is an excellent option.
All in all, slicing your bread shouldn’t be difficult. Make it a little easier with any of the above tools, and enjoy your bread!
