Survival games are known for being brutally difficult for players who attempt to brave them. New PS4 title Stranded Deep is no different. Players will have to fight tooth and nail for every scrap of food and drop of water that they earn while stranded on their remote island. Those who are unused to the survival genre may find themselves a little bit over their head at the beginning of Stranded Deep.
After the plane crashes and players wash up on the shore of an island in the middle of the ocean, many will be left wondering, “Well what do I do next?”. This is a fair question as making one false move in Stranded Deep can leave players in a very hairy situation. This guide will help those players get their feet underneath them during the first couple of hours of Stranded Deep.
Stranded Deep: Listen to the Tutorial
Unlike a lot of games in the survival genre, Stranded Deep doesn’t just turn players loose with no direction. There is a short tutorial that players can use to gain a brief understanding of the game’s mechanics and earn some beginning items and materials. It is imperative that players play through this short tutorial because it will teach them how to build things like the crude knife and the campfire that are essential for survival. Once this tutorial is completed it will be a lot easier to branch out and start creating new things and exploring other areas.
Stranded Deep: Play the Long Game
Stranded Deep is not a very fast game. There will likely be whole in-game days where players don’t accomplish anything other increasing their amount of materials. It takes a lot of time, especially in the early hours of the game, to collect resources and craft items. Naturally, because of this players won’t be progressing very quickly. The trick is to not try and cut corners and increase the pace of Stranded Deep. If players rush around too much and don’t play carefully they can find themselves running out of viable water or food and get themselves killed. Players should be patient and make sure they are stocked up on all the essentials.
Stranded Deep: Craft the Water Still
The first thing that players are likely to learn while playing Stranded Deep is that drinkable water is scarce. Of course, there are coconuts on the island that provide water, but they are non-renewable resources, and drinking too many at the same time will cause the player to become ill. The best way to ensure that their character always has access to water is to craft the water still.
Players will just need to combine a coconut flask, palm fronds, lashings, rocks, and tarp to create one. The craftable objects are pretty simple to obtain, but players may be at a loss on how to get a tarp. Those who haven’t found one should search the shoreline of their island and keep an eye out for a blue square. That will be the tarp that players need for their water still. Once they have built their brand new still players will just need to fill it up with fibrous leaves and palm fronds occasionally to have access to water.
Stranded Deep: Don’t Eat Too Many Coconuts
Coconuts are great in a pinch if players are dying of thirst or hunger, but as noted earlier they can be downright deadly if too many are consumed. Players will find themselves using coconuts often early on in the game for both food and water. The issue here is that if players drink or eat more than two coconuts at a time, they will get diarrhea and become dehydrated. Players would be better off killing and cooking crabs for food and only drinking coconuts until they get the still up and running.
Stranded Deep: Don’t Start Exploring Too Early
This goes back to Stranded Deep being a slow game. In theory, players could begin exploring far away islands and shipwrecks immediately after the game begins. Players should avoid any temptation to do this early on in the game though. It is very easy to wind up in the middle of nowhere with no supplies and struggling to survive all over again. Players should make sure that they have their current island completely fixed up before trying to explore elsewhere.
Stranded Deep: Save Repeatedly
It is extremely easy to die in Stranded Deep and therefore it is important that players save whenever they can. Those who listen to the tutorial will have access to a small tent to sleep in, but this tent can also be used to save the game as well. A very good rule of thumb for players is to save the game both before and after they do something important. Whether that is going hunting or exploring other islands, it is imperative that players have a save file in case they are unfortunately killed.
