As the focal point of your bedroom and the spot where you spend most of your time, it’s good to deep clean your bed! From washing the mattress cover to freshening up the headboard, these cleaning tips can help you make your bed feel fresh and welcoming again in no time!

Wash All Bedding

Take off all of the bedding and give everything a good run through the washing machine. This includes sheets, pillowcases, pillows, throws, comforters, and duvets. In addition, don’t forget to wash the mattress cover! Check the label for washing instructions and, if you can, throw the mattress cover in the washing machine with mild detergent and tumble dry it on low heat.

Clean the Mattress

While the mattress cover is being washed, use this opportunity to clean the mattress itself. First, vacuum any loose dirt and dust off the surface. Then, remove any stains by using an enzyme cleaner, or mix some dish soap and water and blot the stain with the soapy foam. Some stains can be removed by blotting with a mixture of equal parts of hydrogen peroxide and cold water. Once you’ve cleaned your mattress, sprinkle baking soda over it and leave it to sit for several hours to help absorb any odors or moisture. Then, vacuum it once more so the mattress is clean and fresh!

Rotate the Mattress

To keep your mattress from experiencing the same wear-and-tear on one side, you should rotate your mattress at least once or twice a year—or more, depending on the age and type of mattress you have! Rotating helps prevent long-term sagging and spring damage to your mattress.

Touch Up the Headboard & Bed Frame

Use this opportunity to clean the headboard and bed frame! If you have a wooden headboard or frame, wipe away dirt and dust with a microfiber cloth, then use a mild soap and water mixture to spot-treat any stains. For metal frames, use a brush-tip hose attachment to vacuum, then wash with a soapy water solution and steel wool pad to get rid of dirt and grease. For upholstered beds, start by vacuuming the frame or headboard with an upholstery attachment. If the upholstery has stains, blot them with soap and water. For leather headboards, use a brush attachment on your vacuum to remove dust. Then, remove grime and stains with a 50/50 solution of white vinegar and distilled water applied to a soft cloth that you can use to gently clean.

Furniture & Decor

All of the bedroom furniture you have—dressers, nightstands, end tables, vanities, storage benches, shelves—could use a good cleaning. Take a moment to clean each piece of furniture and bedroom decor!

Clean the Dresser

Start by emptying the drawers and sorting through clothes to decide which items to keep and which ones to donate, sell, or trash. When the dresser is totally empty, use a microfiber cloth to wipe down all surfaces including the inside of the drawers, as well as the top, sides, back, and legs. Be sure to vacuum under and behind dressers, too!

Clear Off Nightstands

Remove items like books, magazines, chargers, jewelry, and other miscellaneous items that have accumulated on your nightstands. Once you’ve decluttered the surfaces, use a microfiber cloth to wipe down the top, sides, back, and legs, as well as inside any drawers and on any attached shelving. Then, move the nightstands so you can vacuum underneath and behind them.

Dust Any Shelving

Whether you have floating shelves or a bookcase, make sure you clear off and dust the shelves! Wipe down books and knick-knacks that you keep on shelves, as they can collect just as much dust as shelf surfaces. Work from top to bottom with a damp microfiber cloth and dusting spray.

Make the Mirrors Shine

Clean your mirror! Pretreat stubborn grime and smudges with a little bit of rubbing alcohol and a cotton pad before cleaning your mirror with a glass cleaner or homemade solution. Then, combine equal parts vinegar and water in a spray bottle, spray it onto your mirror, and wipe it down with a microfiber cloth. Dry as needed with an extra paper towel for a sparkle without streaks.

Closet

Ready to refresh your closet for the year? Now’s the ideal time to organize and clean out this bedroom storage space so that you can easily find the clothing and accessories you’re searching for!

Pick a Decluttering Method

Choose a decluttering method to help you clean your closet! Try the Reverse Hanger Trick to pare down clothes you don’t wear anymore or the One In, One Out Rule to limit the number of items you keep.

Go Through Clothes

Remove all clothing from your closet so that you can easily go through each item and consider whether you’ll keep or get rid of them. Separate items into keep, donate, sell, and toss piles. Then, return all keeps to the closet and utilize a closet organization system so that you can find what you need without trouble!

Wipe Down Shelves & Bins

Even in a closed-off closet, the shelves, racks, containers, and baskets can accumulate dust. Dust your closet shelving and containers with a microfiber cleaning cloth, then wipe everything down with dish soap and warm water before placing your clothing back in your closet.

Change Out Seasonal Clothes

If you like to change your clothes out with the seasons, now’s the time to do it! Store cold weather clothing in under-the-bed storage bins, on the top shelves in your closet, or in another storage room within your home.

Use Storage Bins & Hanging Organizers

To help organize your newly cleaned closet, try using hanging or stackable pant organizers, hanging storage bags, or fabric bins to store the clothing you decided to keep in the closet. You can even try a hanging shoe organizer or a shoe rack to keep shoes organized and off of the floor!

Windows

Just like anything else in your bedroom, windows can collect a lot of dirt, dust, and smudges that can make the whole room feel messy. A deep cleaning will have bedroom windows sparkling clean for spring!

Wash the Curtains

Before cleaning the windows, take the curtains down. Curtains can hold all kinds of dust particles, so take them outside and give them a good shake. Check the label to see if your curtains can be machine washed or need to be dry cleaned. Before you put your clean curtains back up, use a microfiber cloth to clean the curtain rod.

Clean the Blinds

Since there are so many different types of blinds, start by deciding which blind cleaning technique is best for the ones in your bedroom. One of the best methods to clean blinds is to secure a microfiber cloth with rubber bands around the ends of a pair of tongs and use it to clean each slat.

Wipe Down the Glass

Using glass cleaner or a homemade window cleaning solution of ten parts water to one part vinegar, spray your windows and wipe them with a clean towel for a streak-free shine. Use another dry cloth or paper towel to dry the glass (if needed) to prevent streaks. You can even use the same vinegar solution to clean the windowsill! Be sure to clean out window tracks, too, by vacuuming out dirt, dust, dead bugs, and any other debris. Sprinkle some baking soda onto grimy spots, spray on some vinegar solution, and let it bubble up and sit for a few minutes before scrubbing away loosened grime with an old toothbrush.

Light Fixtures

If you haven’t cleaned your bedroom light fixtures in a while, spring is a great time to catch up. Check out these spring cleaning tips to clean lights, replace bulbs, and more!

Clean the Fixtures

Whether you have recessed lighting, a chandelier, sconces, or other lighting that can’t be taken down to clean, you can use a duster with an extension pole to remove dust. If you have any glass attachments, remove them and wash with warm water and mild dish soap, then rinse and dry. You can also use a glass or all-purpose cleaner for most glass fixtures. When you’re done cleaning the light fixtures, replace any burnt out bulbs.

Wipe Down the Ceiling Fan

To clean the bedroom ceiling fan, fill a spray bottle with water and a few drops of white vinegar and spritz the solution inside an old pillowcase. Stand on a ladder to wipe each blade clean with the inside of the pillowcase, which will catch all of the dirt, dust, and hair from the blades. Wipe away any excess grime off the blade with a damp cloth.

Remember the Lamps

Just like hanging and built-in light fixtures, unseen dirt and dust tend to build up inside table and desk lamps. Make sure you clean your lampshade based on the type of lamp it is. Regardless of the material, you’ll want to clean the lampshade, base, and bulb so that they’re free of grime.

Walls & Doors

You haven’t cleaned every surface in your bedroom until you’ve properly cleaned the walls! Start by taking everything off the walls, which tend to get much dirtier than you think.

Dust the Walls

Before you wash the walls, remove the dust and cobwebs from the corners of your bedroom walls with a microfiber cloth on the end of a long-handled duster. Move or cover any furniture that’s against the wall so the dust and cobwebs don’t end up falling on them while you clean.

Wash the Walls

Once you’ve dusted the walls, it’s easier to get scuffs and grime off. Washing your walls is important during spring cleaning because it can help prevent cobwebs, dust, and mold from collecting on the walls and get rid of pollutants in your room. Before cleaning the walls, be sure to lay a towel down on the floor to protect your floors from any spills. Fill a bucket with warm water and a squeeze of dish soap, then gently scrub your wall in a circular motion using a soft rag or eraser sponge. Have a stubborn stain? Mix a little bit of baking soda and water and gently rub it onto the stain. Once the walls are clean, rinse them with a damp towel and dry with a clean, dry cloth. Weather permitting, open the windows to help dry the walls!

Clean Vent Covers

Before you start, make sure your furnace and air conditioner are turned off. Unscrew removable vent covers and soak them for a few minutes in a sink filled with hot, soapy water before scrubbing them with a rag or sponge and drying with a microfiber cloth. For fixed vent covers, clean them with a microfiber cloth; use a long-handled duster to clean hard-to-reach vents. Use a rust remover (if needed) on metal vent covers and consider repainting them before placing them back over your vents.

Don’t Forget Light Switches

Light switches can get fairly dirty throughout the year with so many hands touching them, so it’s important to clean both the switches and the covers. All you need to do is apply some rubbing alcohol to a bristle brush or cotton swab to scrub away dirt and grime, then wipe them clean with a dry cloth.

Wipe Down Doors

Using a cleaning rag and a bucket of warm, soapy water, take a few moments to wipe bedroom doors and frames from top to bottom. After rinsing with a damp cloth, take a soft rag to dry both the door and the frame.

Ceiling, Molding, & Baseboards

The ceiling, molding, and baseboards in your bedroom could use some TLC as well! These areas are often overlooked and forgotten about. You might not realize how much dust and cobwebs collect here, so take time to spring clean the highest and lowest parts of your bedroom!

Clean the Ceiling & Molding

Use an extendable sweeper with a microfiber cloth or vacuum with a brush attachment to get any dust or cobwebs that are trapped up high or in the corners of your bedroom. To clean the ceiling and molding, make a cleaning solution of one cup of ammonia, 1/4 cup baking soda, and 1/2 cup of white vinegar mixed into a gallon of warm water. Add some solution to a spray bottle, spritz it onto a soft cloth, and wipe the molding clean before rinsing with plain water and drying with a soft cloth.

Wipe Down & Dust Baseboards

Before cleaning any grime and shoe marks off of the baseboards, use the brush attachment on the vacuum or use a broom along the edge to pick up any dust that has collected in the grooves. Remove shoe scuffs or marks on baseboards by filling a container with a few tablespoons of vinegar and hot water along with a few drops of dish soap and scrub the baseboards clean with an eraser sponge.

Floors

Make cleaning bedroom floors your final step since some of the dirt and dust you’ve cleaned off everything else in your bedroom can easily end up on the floor. Depending on what type of floors you have, you’ll want to approach spring cleaning differently!

Wash Bedroom Rugs

Remove any rugs from your bedroom before cleaning the floor. Start by giving the rugs a good shake outside to remove any dirt and dust. Before deep cleaning the rug, check the tag to see if you can machine wash it. If not, you may want to use a household steam cleaner or get it professionally cleaned.

Vacuum & Shampoo Carpet

Before you start shampooing bedroom carpets, clear out furniture and run a vacuum over the floor. Then, clean the carpet furthest from the door with the same back and forth motion as you would with a vacuum cleaner. Once the carpet is dry, vacuum up any dirt left behind from shampooing. You can rent a carpet shampooer from most home improvement stores if you don’t already own one.

Sweep & Mop Hardwood

Prep your flooring by sweeping, vacuuming, or dry mopping to pick up any dirt or dust that has collected. For a solution to mop vinyl flooring, mix one cup of apple cider vinegar with one gallon of warm water. If you have laminate flooring, try a mixture of one tablespoon of dish soap or baby shampoo and one gallon of hot water. For mopping engineered hardwood, try to use the manufacturer’s recommended cleaning solution, and don’t use products that are vinegar or ammonia-based. For hardwood flooring, use a warm water and vinegar mixture or get a hardwood floor cleaner. After you’ve mopped your bedroom floors, make sure to dry them with a clean, dry towel or a dry mop.
