What is a cable modem?

    A cable modem is a device which allows high speed data access to the Internet via a cable TV (SECTV) network. A two way cable modem will typically have two connections, one to the cable wall outlet and the other to the computer.

How fast is a cable modem?

    At present, SECTV is using an Arris Cable Modem currently configured at speeds up to 1 Gbps for residential and business accounts.

How would a cable modem connect to my computer?

    Cable modems are connected to a computer via an ethernet (NIC) card. Our supplied cable modem requires a 100BaseT ethernet connection on your internet enabled device. A 1000 BaseT ethernet card is required for speeds over 100 Mbps.

What additional services are offered with a cable modem connection?

What are the main advantages of using cable modem service?

    First and foremost, the main advantage is the speed. With a DOCSIS 3 cable modem, you can receive up to 1 Gbps and transmit (upload) at speeds up to 40 Mbps, depending on your speed package.

What is the customer responsible for supplying?

    The customer is responsible for purchasing and installing an ethernet card. The customer must have a cable connection installed for the cable modem. Also, an electrical outlet is required where the cable modem will be installed.

Can I purchase my own cable modem instead of renting one from Service Electric?

     Yes, we recommend a DOCSIS 3.0 or 3.1 modem that supports at least 32 downstreams and 4 upstreams.

Can my television and cable modem be in use simultaneously?

    Yes, both services can be used at the same time. The cable modem and cable television are programmed on different frequencies, and therefore do not interfere with each other.

Do online gaming consoles (such as Xbox Series X, Playstation 5 and Switch) work with Service Electric cable modem service?

    Console games should work using our High Speed Internet service, but that varies from console to console. Please contact the console manufacturer or refer to the user guide to find out what type of broadband connection is necessary for online console gaming.

Does Service Electric provide any technical support or setup information about online console gaming systems?

    Service Electric will not provide any technical support for online console systems. It is up to the customer to set up the console system to access the Internet. Any support issues should be addressed to the console manufacturer.

Are personal firewall programs supported/endorsed by Service Electric?

    Service Electric does not prohibit personal firewall programs, but there are no programs in particular which we endorse. It is also recommended that if a customer chooses to use a personal firewall program, its security setting is placed at a medium level as some have been known to block our servers from giving the computer an IP address.

Can more than 1 device access the internet at the same time via the cable modem?

    Yes, however you will need a router. Service Electric supplies cable modems with built in routers or eero Whole-Home Wifi System at an additional monthly charge.

Are routers supported using a cable modem from Service Electric?

    Service Electric technical support will only be able to support Service Electric issued routers. If you are using third party equipment, we may ask you to disconnect that equipment in order to verify if there is an issue with the actual cable modem itself.
