NIH announces awards for precision nutrition study | Individualized Medicine blog

The Nutrition for Precision Health study leverages NIH’s All of Us Research Program’s large, diverse data platform.

The National Institutes of Health is awarding $170 million over five years, pending the availability of funds, to clinics and centers across the country, including Mayo Clinic, for a new study that will develop algorithms to predict individual responses to food and dietary routines. The Nutrition for Precision Health powered by the All of Us Research Program (NPH) will recruit a diverse pool of 10,000 participants who are part of the NIH’s All of Us Research Program to inform more personalized nutrition recommendations.

NPH is a NIH-wide effort managed by the NIH Common Fund and the first independent study to invite diverse participants from the All of Us program.

The initiative includes 11 new awards and provides additional funds to three existing NIH All of Us Research Program awards, one of which is Mayo Clinic. A specialized biobank for the All of Us Research Program was created by Mayo Clinic. The biobank supports the collection, analysis, storage, and distribution of the biosamples that the program collects for research purposes.

“We are excited to support this new initiative from NIH,” says Stephen Thibodeau, Ph.D., the David F. and Margaret T. Grohne Director, Biorepositories Program, Mayo Clinic Center for Individualized Medicine. “We will be able to leverage the extensive Biobank infrastructure that has been established for the All of Us Research program, allowing us to launch and support the Nutrition for Precision Health study far more efficiently and effectively.”
