Network Hubs at Office Depot OfficeMax
Whether you have a basic home network with a single laptop and printer or you’re working in a small office that hosts multiple computers and other Ethernet-equipped networking devices, network hubs are a great way to connect all of your networking equipment in one central location. A network hub works by handling data, known as packets. When a packet is received on the hub, the packet’s data is then transmitted to all of the connected ports to ensure it reaches its intended destination. With plenty of network hubs to choose from, it’s easy to find a common connection point to suit your setup. For additional networking needs, browse network switches, hubs and unmanaged switches.
Passive, Intelligent and Switching Network Hubs
When considering which network hub is right for you, bear in mind that there are three main types of network hubs. A passive network hub acts solely as a carrier of data, passing information along to ports without amplifying packets. An intelligent or active network hub allows an administrator to monitor and manage the traffic of packets that pass through the hub for a more hands-on approach. Finally, a switching network hub reads the destination address of each packet and forwards that packet on to the correct port only.
Number of Ports
Network hubs range widely in size and ability, from small, passive hubs with only two or four ports to large, intelligent hubs with 24 ports and rack-mountable designs. Each port is capable of connecting a single networking cable, so consider how many networking devices you need connected before choosing.
Hub Speed
Fast Ethernet or Gigabit Ethernet – these are the two hub speeds available. While Fast Ethernet will accommodate most networking needs, for a truly fast connection, Gigabit Ethernet is the way to go.
