IELTS Listening Practice Test Based on Question Types

The Listening section of the IELTS exam includes different types of tasks that assess various aspects of a candidate’s listening skills. The types of questions asked in the IELTS Listening section are as follows

Multiple Choice Questions

In the multiple-choice tasks for IELTS listening, you are given a question with three possible answers. You are supposed to choose one correct answer out of the given options. In some questions, you can also be asked to choose from a longer list of possible answers, and you might also have to choose more than one correct answer.

Matching Questions

In the matching tasks for IELTS listening, you are required to match a numbered list of items from the listening audio to a set of options from the question paper. You are marked on your ability to identify and understand the relevant information from a conversation on an everyday topic.

Diagram/Plan/Map Labeling

In this category of IELTS listening tasks, you will be shown an image of a map, a diagram, or a plan from which certain graphical elements will be omitted. You are required to complete the image by filling in the missing details and information. Typically, there is a set of options given, and you are supposed to choose the answers from the given list.

Summary/Note/Table/Form/Flow-Chart Completion

In this task, you are given the outline of the listening audio. The outline focuses on the main ideas or features of the audio and you are required to fill in the gaps in the given outline. The outline may be in the form of:

  • Notes – This can be presented in various layouts and is used to summarize any type of information and link different items from the recording together.
  • Tables – Used to organize the data from the recordings into well-defined categories like price, place, time, etc.
  • Forms – Used to record important information and particulars from/about the recording.
  • Flow-Charts – Used to represent various elements or stages of a process that occur in a particular order.

A list of possible answers may be provided, or you may have to identify missing words from the recording. The word limit for your answers in this task is strictly tracked, and the word limit may vary depending on the given instructions. Writing more than the set word limit will impact your score for a particular question and you might not be marked for the same.

Sentence Completion

In this task for the listening section, you are given a set of sentences that summarize the key information from the listening audios. Important words or phrases from these given sentences are left out and you are required to fill in the gaps using the information from the listening audio. This task also has a strict word limit and you will receive a lesser score for writing more than the stated number of words.

Short-answer Questions

The short-answer questions in the IELTS listening test require you to read and answer a short question based on the information that is given in the listening audio. In this task, you are not given a list of possible answers, rather you have to create your own responses. This task also features a word limit that needs to be strictly followed.

Practise Listening at Home

You can practise the IELTS listening exercises at the comfort of your home. In order to do this, you need to focus on certain things like:

Finding out the skills needed for listening

Predicting skill

The examiner will ask you to read the question before playing the audio. While practicing at home, you need to do the same and you should be able to predict the audio content by looking at the question.

Understand the synonyms and paraphrasing

Sometimes the words used in audio may not be the same as that of the question and the paraphrasing may also be difficult to comprehend. So, you should listen carefully to write the correct answer.

Should understand different slangs

Native speaker’s English will be quite difficult to understand. But you will be able to overcome this by watching recommended English movies and listening to English Songs. Wide exposure to such English will facilitate a better understanding of the audios played in the actual test.

Recognize the signposting

It is not possible to fully concentrate on the audio that is played. Native speakers too will not be able to do this. To practice this, you have to listen to the lectures and when you hear some difficult words in the audio you can pause and find out the meaning of the same.

Listening to two people speaking

When two people speak there will always be one person agreeing and another person disagreeing. You need to find out whether there are two people in the conversation and empathize with one person and try to understand the conversation.

Taking the notes

You need to listen to the lectures and make the notes as the lecture goes on. Everybody has their own way of notes-making, so it is up to you to take meaningful notes. After you note down everything, check for the correctness of the spellings.
