If you decide that the dark wall isn’t for you, simply paint it back to it’s original color! I recently painted a dark wall in my master bedroom and in my toddler room makeover. To seal the tape, paint along the edges with your original wall color. Then, go in with the new black color along the edges. Next, roll on the paint. This will give you the perfect black accent wall.

Even if you have absolutely no DIY experience, you can paint a black accent wall in your home. Don’t feel like you need to hire this out, you can do it yourself! Painting just one wall is a great way to gain some confidence in painting walls before you tackle a larger project.

If you want to elevate a space or add some drama, try painting a black accent wall. This method also works with any dark color. It’s amazing how it will transform a space.

Where To Paint A Black Accent Wall

You may wonder if a black accent wall is the right decision for your space. The most important thing to remember when adding a dark wall, is to think about the natural light that the room receives on any given day.

If you are thinking of adding a black accent wall to a basement or bathroom that has no windows, you might want to reconsider. Adding a black wall to a room that gets little to no light will make the room seem smaller and darker than it already is.

If you have a bedroom or living room that gets a good amount of natural light throughout the day, then a black accent wall might be the perfect choice for you! A room that is saturated with natural light can handle a dark and dramatic wall.

Steps For How To Paint The Perfect Black Accent Wall

Step 1: Tape off the edges of your wall with painter’s tape.

Make sure you press firmly all around the edges of your painter’s tape to make sure there is a good seal around the sides. Don’t forget to tape along the ceilings and baseboards too!

Step 2: Cover your work area with drop cloths.

You can also use a trash bag or old sheet. Another tip is to place your paint supplies and paint can in a cardboard box. That way, if there is a spill, it will be contained in the box. It’s also easy to slide the box around as you move across the room.

Step 3: Patch any holes.

Use a quick dry wall spackling that can be painted over. After it is dry, lightly sand the area.

Step 4: Apply a coat of your original paint color along the painter’s tape to create a seal.

This step is totally optional, but to create a good seal on the painter’s tape, grab some leftover paint of your original wall color. Brush along the painter’s tape in the corners, ceiling and baseboards and allow it to dry. This will ensure a clean line when you remove the painter’s tape at the end.

Step 5: Use an edging paint brush to paint along the edges of the wall.

An angled paint brush is perfect for cutting in around the edges of the wall. Make sure you feather out the paint along the edges to prevent drips and create a seamless paint application once you roll the rest of the wall.

Step 6: Use a paint roller to apply paint to the wall.

Now that your wall is edged, use a roller to apply paint to the rest of the wall. Work in small sections, going in a “W” pattern. Then roll back over your “W” in a horizontal motion. This ensures thorough coverage. Move on to another section, repeating this process until the whole wall is covered.

Step 7: After your first coat has dried, start the process all over again.

To make your room look professional, do as many coats as you need. If you are wondering if your wall needs another coat, it probably does! When in doubt, do more coats. Nothing looks more ameteur than a wall that has spotty paint. You will probably need to do 2-3 coats for black paint to make sure that the wall is completely covered.

Step 8: While the last coat is still wet, remove the painter’s tape.

Most people think their wall needs to be dry before removing the tape, but I think that it works best to remove it while the last coat is still wet. If you feel like some of the paint is ripping off with the tape, run a utility knife along the painter’s tape and then remove.

Step 9: Allow the paint to fully cure before moving furniture back and hanging artwork.

You don’t want to ruin all of your hard work, so make sure the wall paint is completely cured for at least 24 hours (48 or more is even better) before moving your furniture and hanging artwork on your newly painted black wall.

And you are done! You’ve just painted the perfect black accent wall.
