How to Connect to the Wired Network
Follow the steps below to connect to the CMU Wired Network. Note: IT Staff or Student Organizations who maintain network registrations for their group should follow alternate Network Registration guidance.
Step 1: Activate your Outlet
Note: Outlets in Registrar Classrooms are already active. Continue to Step 2: Connect the Ethernet Cable if using a wired connection in this space.
- Connect to the CMU network through either a wired or wireless connection. Note: If you are off-campus you will need to connect to VPN first before proceeding to step 2.
- Visit the CANDO website.
- Click Enter Cable and Network Distribution Operations Application (left).
- Enter your Andrew userID and password if prompted. The CANDO home screen with a list of your previous activations displays.
- On the sidebar, double-click CANDO Navigation > Activations Activations> New Activation.
- Click New Activation (left). The New Activation tab displays.
- Select the Location, Building, and Room from the appropriate drop-downs. A list of available outlets and their activation statuses will display.
- Click the outlet you wish to activate and click Request Activation to submit your request. Note: Outlet activation may take up to two business days.
Note: This completes the student activation process.
Customize Configuration Details
Note: The following options may not be available for students.
- Your Configuration Details should autopopulate based on your location. Click Save to apply.
- To customize configuration details click the Network drop-down and select the name of your building.
- Click Template and select the appropriate option. If unsure of the template, select Single Host (User or Server).
- Click Save. A summary of your outlet activation will display.
- Click Expires On and set an expiration date for the activation, if desired.
- Click Save.
Step 2: Connect the Ethernet Cable
Once the outlet has been activated:
- Connect your ethernet cable to the ethernet port on your computer.
- Connect the other end of the ethernet cable to wall outlet.
Note: You may need an ethernet adapter for your computer.
Step 3: Register your Computer/Device
Students
To register devices in residence halls:
- Visit the Device Registration tool.
- Log in with your Andrew userID and password.
- Under Wired (Residential), click Register

- Enter a hostname (e.g., JoeUser-Mac).
- Enter the MAC address of your device.
- Click the Network drop-down, and select the building you are connecting from.
- Click Submit.
Note: Devices are registered with a private IP address. This provides additional security when accessing internet resources. Contact the Computing Services Help Center to request a public IP address for a device if you require one.
Faculty, Staff, and all others
To register a device in 311 South Craig Street, 4705 Fifth Avenue (Fifth Neville Apartments), 4735 Fifth Avenue (Fifth Clyde Residence Hall), 475 Butler St Etna, Pittsburgh Technology Center and TCS Hall:
- Visit
Register Device – Wired Network

- Ehostname for your computer.
- Hardware address – enter your computer’s MAC address.
- If registering for others, click
Register this device for a group or department.
- Click the Network drop-down, choose your location, and then click Submit. Note: Device registrations may take 15 to 25 minutes to complete after submission.
Note: Devices in these buildings are registered with a private IP address. This provides additional security when accessing internet resources. Contact the Computing Services Help Center to request a public IP address for a device if you require one.
To register devices located in all other academic or administrative buildings, as well as departmental computers/devices in residence halls:
- Visit https://netreg.net.cmu.edu.
- Click Enter.
- Download the Root Certificate if prompted.
- Log in with your Andrew userID and password if prompted.
- Click Register New Machine.
- Click the Building drop-down and select your location, then click Continue.
- Click the Subnet drop-down, then click Continue.
- Enter the Basic Information:
- Hostname (optional) – enter a name for your computer.
- Domain Name – select andrew.cmu.edu unless your group is listed.
- Hardware address – enter your computer’s MAC address.
- Affiliation – select your affiliation.
- Click Continue. Your registered computer will be listed below. Device registrations may take up to 30 minutes to complete after submission.
