How to Blog Daily: 7 Principles to Help You Stay Consistent

So, you want to blog daily? That’s one of the most common goals among bloggers. As a blogger myself, I understand and wanted to publish every day too. But, there’s a problem with daily blogging – how do you stay consistent?

Blogging every day is easier said than done. Publishing an article may be something easy to do, but to do it every day? It’s going to be challenging, and trust me, 99% of bloggers are going to fail and give up halfway.

And that’s why this guide is about – sharing with you the 7 principles of how to be consistent with your blogging journey, especially if you are aiming to blog every single day.

But, before we talk about how you can publish every day, there’s one big question you need to answer…

Should you blog daily?

should you blog every day?

The answer? It depends. It depends on your objective of starting a blog.

If you blog because you enjoy writing and sharing your thoughts with the world, then blogging daily should be something you should practice.

The same goes if you use a blog as a journal to write down your experiences and how you have been living your life. Then daily blogging should be considered.

What about if you want to grow a blog, make it famous, and become a successful blogger?

Well then, if your objective is to build an authority blog and you want to become an influencer in your niche, daily blogging may NOT be the right approach?

Why? Simple, quality trumps quantity.

It is not about how many blog posts you have on your blog or whether you can blog consistently every day, it is about publishing something quality that people want to read.

Therefore, to answer the question of whether you should blog daily depends on your objective for your blog.

  • What do you want out of your blog?
  • Why do you want to blog?
  • What kind of blog do you want to build?

If you can answer these questions, then your objective should be clear. And if you still want to pursue daily blogging, then follow these 7 principles below to help you stay consistent…

1. Focus on making progress, not results

focus on making progress, not results

First and foremost, focus on making progress, not results. Too many bloggers make the mistake of focusing on the results, such as number of daily visits, page views, number of subscribers, etc.

These are vanity metrics. In other words, these numbers are lag measures. What you want to focus on is progress, not results.

In short, you want to focus on publishing daily, not the traffic stats from Analytics.

That means your priority is to write and hit publish every day. And as long as you publish, you should feel good and celebrate your progress, regardless of the traffic stats.

You see, too many bloggers fail and quit blogging daily because they focus on the traffic stats. They check their blogs’ analytics every day, some even do it a couple of times a day.

Imagine you check your blog’s traffic today and it shows zero, you do it again the next day and it shows 2 visits. And then on the third day, it shows zero again. How do you feel?

Not good, right? Your level of motivation will be affected.

And this is why focusing on vanity metrics will not help you succeed with your daily publishing schedule.

What you want to do is to focus on making progress. As long as you write and continue to publish, even if the blog post is not as good as you imagine, celebrate. Because you made progress.

And the more you publish, the better you will get. You will find your voice and become a better blogger.

And when you get better, you will write better blog posts. And when your writing skills improve, you will attract more people to your blog. People will share your content and your traffic stats will rise.

Do you see how it works now?

Most bloggers get it backward by focusing on the traffic. No, if you want to get more traffic to your blog, focus on making progress, not the stats.

This mindset shift will help you be more consistent with publishing every day.

2. Make good use of an editorial calendar

Make good use of an editorial calendar

The second tip is to create an editorial calendar. Why? So that you can know what you need to write with a glance at your calendar.

The reason is simple, most bloggers find it hard to blog daily because of this – running out of blog post ideas.

This is the biggest challenge you must overcome if you want to stick with your plan for publishing every day.

When you have no idea what to post, you will procrastinate. You will look at the blank screen and feel frustrated because you are going to fail and quit.

That’s why it is important to have an editorial calendar. You want to create and write down all the blog post ideas so that when it is time to blog, you can just choose a title and start writing.

Don’t fall into the trap of thinking about what to write only when the time comes. Instead, prepare yourself and get ready by getting all the blog post ideas down on your editorial calendar.

Once you know the title of the article, you are almost halfway done. You already know and identified what to write beforehand, it allows you to jump into the writing process straight.

Therefore, plan your editorial calendar. Schedule time to list down all possible blog post ideas and titles that you should cover for your blog.

If you find it hard to generate content ideas, read Meera Kothand’s One Hour Content Plan. It is a great book that gives you an insight into how to create blog post ideas fast.

3. Do it when there’s no distraction

Do it when there's no distraction

Principle #3, make sure there’s no distraction when writing. You find it extremely difficult to write when distractions are everywhere.

This is because creating a blog post requires time. For me, I need at least an hour of distraction-free time to write an article. Usually, it took me about 2 or even 3 hours to create longer articles above 2,000 words.

Hence, you want to make sure you have an undistracted moment to craft your content. The easier you get distracted, the more likely you are going to procrastinate and not be able to blog every day.

Publishing daily requires commitment. If you are not committed, you will never sit in front of your computer typing at the blank Words document, and you have to do it every day.

This is why you want to create a distraction-free environment to support your blogging routine.

4. Document, don’t create

document your journey, don't create

One of the golden lessons I learned about creating content on a daily basis is this – document, don’t create.

This strategy is made famous by Gary Vaynerchuck. I first learned about this strategy from Russell Brunson’s best-selling book, Traffic Secrets: The Underground Playbook for Filling Your Websites and Funnels with Your Dream Customers. By the way, this is a great online marketing book that I strongly suggest you get a copy of and read right away…

When it comes to content creation, too many people got it wrong and thought that they need to create. In other words, we all think that content creation is about creating something unique that no one has talked about before.

And that is where most people got stuck and fail to find great ideas to talk about. But according to Gary Vaynerchuck, what you should do is not to create, but to document.

That means you want to share your experience of what you have done. You don’t have to create, instead, you document your journey.

For example, if you are into the fishing niche, you can talk about where you go fish and how you fish. You don’t have to create, instead, share your experience, thoughts, and feelings.

That’s how you find your voice and become an influencer in your niche.

And once you understand this “document, don’t create” concept, you will never run out of ideas about what to publish daily.

In fact, understanding this concept allows you to publish every day much more easily.

5. Schedule and time-block your blogging time

Schedule and time-block your blogging time

If you want to be consistent with your blogging schedule, here’s what you should do – block your calendar so that you will make sure it happens.

Use the time-blocking strategy to ensure you will get your articles written and publish.

Here’s how it works. You can time-block an hour a day, say from 9 AM to 10 AM, for blogging. Hence, every day at 9 AM, you will make sure you sit in front of your computer and start creating your blog post.

You will never let any other activities or tasks take away your attention during this hour. In this one hour, you will do nothing except blogging. That’s how time-blocking works.

It is a very powerful strategy that will make sure what needs to get done, gets done.

You schedule every other activity around your time block, which is blogging, and not the other way round. Other activities and tasks will have to give way to what you have time-blocked.

6. Understand that it’s a numbers game

blogging is a numbers game

That’s right, publishing daily is more about getting your voice out there. It is more like a numbers game.

Think about it, when you publish consistently on your blog every day, there will be days when you write crappy content, there will be days when you write so-so content, and there will also be days when you write great content.

Eventually, it will average out and your skills will improve. You will become better as you find your voice along your publishing journey.

You will create more great posts than the so-so posts. You will start to understand your target audience better, and you will also become an expert in your niche as you grow deeper.

Blogging daily is a numbers game. You don’t have to worry about the traffic count or how many comments you get on your blog posts, you just publish every day.

The more content you put out there, the more great content you will have on your blog. And as time passed by, you will have published more quality posts that people want to read.

This is why blogging takes time. Whenever you publish a piece of content on your blog, you are creating an asset.

In the beginning, the asset may not seem to be valuable, but as you grow and have more assets (posts and content) on your blog, the more valuable your blog becomes.

Therefore, understand that if you want to be consistent with daily publishing, you are playing the numbers game. When you understand this principle, it allows you to focus on publishing, regardless of the traffic count or social shares. It makes you focus better.

7. Hold yourself accountable to blog

Hold yourself accountable to blog

That’s right, you have to hold yourself accountable to blog. Let’s face it, blogging every day requires commitment and accountability on your part.

There is no way you can be consistent if you don’t have the commitment and the accountability.

The question then becomes, how do you hold yourself accountable to blog every day? How do you increase your commitment so that you will stick to your publishing plan and write daily?

Here’s a simple technique – make a public commitment.

Tell your audience about your plan and keep your promise. For example, you can share your plan for publishing every day on Facebook so that your fans and followers know about it. And once you got the words out, your level of commitment will increase.

It is like doing a challenge. Every day, you share your progress on social media and you blog about it.

This is how you hold yourself accountable to blog every day.
