HiMama App

In my Children and Technology class I’m taking this final semester, we were lucky to have a guest speaker come in to talk to us about HiMama, an app designed for classrooms and childcare centres that records daily activities, milestones, lessons and more; all available for the parent or caregiver to access!

    I wanted to share this resource as a way to promote this wonderful company but to also promote the teaching style that is being portrayed very effectively. Starting as a small idea, this application software took off when mobile devices were thought about being used in a different way then just texting and playing games. Simply put, all the wonderful features that a mobile device (usually) has: a camera, keyboard, sharing qualities, contacts, and lots of storage, can all be used exactly like a document book would be. #PAPERLESS

    If there are any visitors to this blog in the Early Childhood field, think about all the time you spend jotting down notes for one child, updating a development log, recording meals and bathroom use. Instead of grabbing the pen and book (or books), just grab your tablet, turn it on a press a few buttons, it’s that simple.

Parents, we know that cellphones and tablets can be used for so many different things already. You can catch up on emails, social media and even open your cookbook all from the comfort of one device. It’s time to add one more use to that hand-held wonder, your childs’ everyday progress in this classroom/child care centre! With this HiMama App, you can literally track your child’s day with a few clicks and scrolls. Not sure if they ate their lunch? You can view all of their meals from that day! Not only can you track your child on your own time, you will also get alerts sent by email and notification if anything were to happen within the classroom.

    The basic selling point to this application is that it is everything an ECE is used to recording, and everything a parent is used to getting notified about, but just paperless and more time-effective! If a group of 50 ECE students can have one hour and a half presentation on this, ready immediately to get their hands on this app, then I am positive in the wonderful response it will get if promoted further to other centres, students and parents! 

    There is one important thing to note about this concept; it is the ECE using the application within the classroom/centre. Unlike many other blog posts I have written about using technology in the class, this segment only pertains to the leaders of those rooms, not the students! Children will be seeing a lot of tablets and things being documented by picture (consent to have a child’s photo being taken will be clarified before the app is used in the classroom) however, they will be the ones in the photo, not taking it. 

    On the HiMama website there are fabulous links, examples and contact pages for any questions or inquiries you may have. Something interesting to note is the “Tell my daycare to try HiMama” tab, leading you to a contact page to fill out some information. Should you submit it to the company, they will contact your child’s centre and explain what they are all about! If you believe as much as I do that this is something positive coming out of the integration of technology, then visit the website and explore further for yourself!
