All About The Brand New Toyo Open Country R/T Trail Tire
Hybrid terrain tires have been storming the off-road and overlanding market over the last few years due to their expanded performance versatility. They’re not as aggressive as mud-terrain tires yet, but they do still offer a surprisingly high amount of off-road performance, and once aired up and back on the road again, they’ll feel and perform much closer to an all-terrain tire – this makes them a perfect choice for anyone looking for a top option to give you great performance both on and off the pavement.
It’s also why Toyo Tires is introducing a new hybrid terrain tire into its light truck lineup, in the Open Country RT Trail. After extensive market research and gathering inside intel from avid off-road enthusiasts like you, Toyo had enough information to fuel this new RT Trail tire, engineered exclusively for Jeeps, Toyotas, pickup trucks, and more. Today, we’ll show you what’s new and improved and how it can help any adventure you take!

Sizing and Performance Features of the Toyo Open Country R/T Trail
The Open Country R/T Trail is a perfect tire for all sorts of four-wheel drive vehicles that see mild to aggressive off-road terrains, but will also be used to conquer the pavement. The Open Country R/T Trail won’t be replacing the Open Country R/T, though – it’ll just be a new addition to the Open Country lineup, with a 45,000-mile treadwear warranty and starting in availability of 30 sizes.
Eventually, though, the Open Country R/T Trail will be available in 47 different sizes to choose from, fitting 16-wheel diameters all the way up to 24 inches. The largest size available will be 38 inches, but that’ll only fit a 24-inch wheel – a 37-inch tall RT will be offered right away, fitting a 20 inch wheel, then 17, 18 and 22s in due time.
Unfortunately, but consistent with many of the other hybrid tire brands out there, the R/T Trail will not carry the three-peak Mountain Snowflake symbol that would have otherwise stated that it meets or exceeds certain severe winter weather driving standards. Toyo decided to keep this designation for their AT3W and WLT1 – however, being born from the AT3, the R/T Trail does score higher in wet and winter performance compared to the current R/T model.

Design Features of the Toyo Open Country R/T Trail
Since this is an introductory overview of the R/T Trail, and we haven’t had the chance to get a physical look at it in person yet, we won’t be able to confidently speak on how it’ll perform on on and off-road environments, but what we can tell you is that it looks great.
The R/T Trail has the traditional design cues of both the AT3 and the R/T – Toyo has also stated that they’ve increased the rubber thickness of the sidewalls in order to help prevent punctures or tears in the sidewalls. Plus, the sidewall surrounding the rim has a pretty thick rim protector to help in preserving the natural aesthetics of your wheels and preventing curb rash.
Other noticeable attributes on the Open Country R/T Trail include the angled tread design, with large tread blocks and pretty sizable evacuation grooves in between all the center tread blocks and shoulder blocks. Each tread block has a straight side and a larger tapered notch, both of which will help in providing additional biting edges for grip and aid in evacuating water, snow, loose dirt, and sand. The sipes and tapered grooves will also help with the flexibility of the tread blocks, allowing the tread to envelop and contour to off-road obstacles like rocks or logs while aired down.
