Delighted with tuner

Delighted with my purchase, the staff in Richersounds Eton were all excellent, a pleasure to deal with and I highly recommend them to deal with.

Quality streamer somewhat let down by firmware

Great sound however the built-in support for both last.fm and napster is now defunct so that leaves internet radio which works very well and home network which is let down by clunky navigation via the remote. It would be good if Denon offered firmware updates to support other streaming services.

The iOS remote app is also rather poor so doesn’t sort out the navigation issues browsing your home music collection.

Airplay support redeems this device somewhat as you can play anything that works on an iOS device through the streamer. For example Spotify works brilliantly and has a good iOS UI so the above concerns re navigation aren’t an issue.

If you don’t have an iPad or iPhone then I would not recommend this product.

useful separate

Bought this to replace my (soon to be redundant) FM/AM tuner.
Decided to skip the DAB generation and go straight to internet radio.
-FM/AM still an option with this unit.

Initial setup was a bit complicated, having gone the wireless route.

On powering up, one is sent into a menu system that is a bit confusing and didn’t seem to match the quick setup guides.

After a few minutes wait (as the tuner did it’s stuff) the unit booted up and all was well with the world.
Now running sweetly with both FM and internet radio sounding fine.
Felt happier with the setup process once it was working!

There are plenty of options as to how you may want to deploy this piece of kit, best to view it as a tuner replacement, old style hi-fi separate, with a connectivity twist.

Used wirelessly with Apple Airport Express and old style co-ax aerial. Suggest researching the compatibility of your network before investing in this tuner.
Recommend the download of informative pdf manual to be sure.

It gives me what I want

I wanted to connect to Internet radio, to be able to play music and listen to other things from my Mac using a wireless connection to my network. It does just that. The only problem that I have had was initially making the wireless connection in the first place.

A good DAB buster

I bought this because André in Brighton recommended it over a DAB tuner costing £100 more. The FM bit sold me and the knowledge that internet BBC is usually better quality than DAB BBC.

This turns out to be oh so true. So I have managed to miss out the DAB generation in my hi-fi system. (We do have DAB elsewhere, but not for serious listening.)

The access to the many thousands of internet radio stations (27403 at last count) is great, although the VTuner web page is pretty clunky, and prone to falling over. It is also impossible to rearrange stations.

Navigating these stations on the tuner is not that intuitive. Maybe I will get the hang of it.

Switching between FM and internet can be a shock, thanks to the louder output of the Internet tuner.

Your Internet connection is obviously important. Mine has been dreadful of late – BT is on the case – which is why the FM is essential.

All in all, good value for money as an alternative to the limited range of DAB separates available.

Nice unit let down by poor software support

This would be so much better with a bit more software development on the firmware and more particularly, to make an android app which actually works. There is no viable AirPlay or remote app for droid.
Reading from USB is fussy, difficult and often slow to navigate, especially on large mixed volumes.
The Online Music function is useless to most users as Napster no longer exists and Last FM requires a paid subscription on a hardware device.
I’d like to see a better display. It’s not too much to ask in this day and age to have a colour display showing time remaining and artwork.

Simple but potent Tuner/Internet radio/Network music hub

Was sceptical whether to go for this tuner by comments from previous reviews, tempted to pay more for a more sophisticated NAS/internet radio unit. this would have left me short of the FM function I originally sought after.
The customer service Gent informed me I had a 14 Day return option, so I went for this with my fingers crossed.
I am not disappointed!
Out of the box it was straight forward to set up, I was jumping pages of the manual through my own impatience not because of any complications.
It recognises my NAS and laptop but have yet to stream – I believe I have network issues which I need to resolve!
iTunes Airplay worked a treat – as quick as it takes to click the right tabs. I am currently streaming from my library and several tracks have made me smile at the clarity and warmth of the sound. Literally just function tested the iPod connectivity – straight in there like a whippet, use either the remote or the iPod wheel but it only uses the iPod screen for visual reference.

To redress the balance

This network streamer has had a firmware update in May this year that adds gapless audio support as well as the ability to fast forward and rewind via both USB and network streaming.

Reviews suggest that the sound quality is not quite up there with the likes of the Cambridge Audio or Marantz, however I find it nearly up there with the sound quality of my NAD C565 CD Player, and obviously far more convenient to be classed as a replacement, at least as far as convenience and instant accessibility is concerned.

It does exactly what I need it to at half the price of the competition whilst still being musically competent, a veritable bargain! Excellent sound, excellent value at Richer Sounds price 5/5 all round from me.
