Business communications learning journal unit 7 – The rite of initiation I experienced at my – Studocu
The rite of initiation I experienced at my workplace was shortly after I resumed as the only
foreign teacher in an international school of over 25 teachers. As a foreigner I have little or no
knowledge about the country’s culture and the way things are done in school, my boss only gave
me my teaching plans and time table. When I resumed school it was a different atmosphere
entirely.
The unusual feelings start from the classroom setting and the organization, it was quite strange to
me. I was familiar with the row and column arrangement of chairs and tables but the school
system of arrangement is just on a straight line and the students have to face each other. I was not
comfortable with it because I believe the students should face the teacher and not themselves, but
then I was made to realize that is their way of life which I later embraced.
Another rite of initiation was the break, I am used to eating breakfast from 9 am upward and
lunch by 3 pm downward, depending on my mood. When I joined the school I realized my
fellow staffs eat their lunch by 11 am to 12noon and that was a new experience for me, I have to
adapt because I can’t eat when I am supposed to be at work.
I believe the rite of initiation in my workplace was quite friendly as I was introduced to the
system slowly. They realize I was coming from another world and I view things in another way
and that made the rite of initiation easy on me. I also accept and respect their opinion and their
way of doing things even when it different from what I have learned all my life.
