XEFL-310 ESL Business Communication I | Georgetown School of Continuing Studies (SCS)
Course Description
This course is designed for students who are either currently working professionals or for those who are seeking work. It follows a Case-Based Learning curriculum. This means that students will read several stories throughout the semester about business scenarios. They will work in groups to analyze the cases, discuss issues, and make decisions. Students will also get an opportunity to take on the role of someone involved in the case, which gives them a chance to reflect on the case’s impact on key players and stakeholders.
A Case-Based Learning curriculum gives students an opportunity to refine their communication skills in the context of a realistic business scenario. In this course, students will work on giving descriptions, paraphrasing information, making recommendations, making apologies, asking for clarification, and giving an opinion. In addition, students will write formal emails. This course ends with short, individual presentations as well as a class debate.
Before taking this course, students should be able to communicate in a variety of basic situations and write short compositions in present, past, and future tenses. They should be able to understand familiar spoken and written texts.
