Alabama State has won six of its last seven games dating back to last season, when coach Donald Hill-Eley took over as the interim coach six games into the 2017. He has since assumed full-time duties as the head coach of the Hornets.
The Hornets were picked to finish second in their division behind Alcorn State in the SWAC.
Auburn is 99-16-3 in home openers, including 64-12-2 inside Jordan-Hare Stadium. The Tigers have never lost to a team in the SWAC, though they have only played Alabama A&M (2012 and 2016).
The game will be televised on the SEC Network’s Alternate channel, with Mark Neely providing play-by-play, Barrett Jones on color commentary and Taylor Davis providing reports from the sideline.
Auburn is led by quarterback Jarrett Stidham, who completed 72 percent of his passes for 273 yards and one touchdown in a 21-16 victory against Washington in the season opener Sept. 1. The Tigers’ defense held Washington’s high-powered offense to one touchdown in six trips inside the red zone, including three possessions inside the 10-yard line.
“I came in Sunday and watched their game against Washington, and there was no line of scrimmage, their defensive line was in the backfield disrupting things,” Hill-Eley said. “Then you look at them on the offensive side and they have a lot of speed on the perimeter. The quarterback did a great job of putting balls where only his guys could make plays. You see a well-coached team and a very talented team. A team with over 70 percent 4- and 5-star athletes, that tells you alone they are well-equipped.”
Alabama State is led by quarterback D.J. Pearson and running back Ezra Gray, who scored the game-winning touchdown against Tuskegee last week on a 30-yard run in overtime.
The game marks the first away game for Alabama State, which will not return to Montgomery for a home game until November.
