While Christmas is considered as a big holiday in America, in Viet Nam, Tet is a special occasion for family reunions and celebrating the arrival of spring. Held between late January and early February, Tet is officially a three -day celebration but it may continue for at least first week of the lunar new year. In the weeks leading up to Tet, all homes are thoroughly cleaned to get rid of bad lucks of the old year. On these special days, people often put a five – fruit tray on the altars to pay their respects to the ancestors and buy peach blossom or a kumquat tree to decorate their houses. When it comes to Tet festival, it is a shortcoming if you can not enjoy Chung cake – the special dish of Tet. In the last day of the previous year, all the members of the family often have a dinner together and wait for the moment when the clock points 0 am and the fireworks light up everywhere to wish for health, happiness in the coming year. On the first day of lunar new year, everyone often comes to grandparents, relatives and neighbors’ houses to wish them health, happiness and a happy new year. Children often receive lucky money kept in a red envelope from their parents and relatives. On these days, women often go to the church or pagoda to pray for all the best things for their families. In conclusion, Tet is a meaningful and important festival which is always expected by every Vietnamese. It is time for us to have some days of relaxation with our loved family.
