Using Skype for Business – Contacts, Groups, IM and Screen Sharing | Information Technology Services

Open up the program on your computer. You can find it by using the Windows Search and typing in Lync.

Sign in using your [email protected] email address and your netid password.

You use this same password for your Connect email and my.rutgers.edu.

Find Someone

Connect with people in your organization, or with friends who have a Skype account.

  1. Type a name in the Search box. As soon as you do, the tabs below the Search field change.
  2. Use My Contacts (This is the default search) for anyone in the Rutgers
  3. Use Skype Directory to search through all Skype and Skype for Business users

Send an Instant Message

Use instant messaging (IM) to touch base with your contacts right away.  

  1. In your Contacts list,you can right click the user you would like to message. If you want to select more than one person for a group chat, hold CTRL while you’re clicking to select/deselect other users.
  2. Click ‘Send an IM’. If you have more than one person selected, you can hit Enter to start the conversation. On the window that pops up, type your message and press the Enter key on your keyboard to send the message.

Add a Contact

Once you find a person, add them to your Contacts list for quick access.

  1. Right-click the name in the search results.
  2. Click Add to Contact List.
  3. Pick a group to add your new contact to.

Create a Group

Set up a group for each team you work with so you quickly see who’s available, or communicate with the entire team at once.

  1. Click the Add a Contact button on the right hand side of the Skype Window.
  2. Select Create a New Group.
  3. Begin typing your new group name.

Switch Between Convesations

If you have several conversations or meetings going on at the same time, Skype for Business displays them all in one place, so you can toggle between them.

Click a tab on the left to view an IM conversation.

Find a previous IM conversation

If you use Outlook, Skype for Business automatically saves your old IMs in a folder called Conversation History. To view or continue a previous IM conversation or see an IM request you missed:

  1. Click the Conversations tab.
  2. Click the All or Missed tab. If you don’t see the conversation you’re looking for, click View More in Outlook at the bottom of the list. Skype for business will open Outlook and pull up your Converstaion History folder.
  3. Double-click the conversation that you want to open.

Presenting your Desktop

You can present your desktop if you have a chat open. This feature is available in group chats as well.

  1. Click the Monitor icon
  2. Click Present Desktop. You’ll be able to choose what monitor you want to display.

The person(s) you are presenting to can even take control of your computer if you allow it.

Once you choose to present your desktop, you’ll be able to choose what monitor(s) you want to use to present. If you hover your mouse over a choice, it will highlight the monitor you are currently hovering over.

You can grant your audience control of your screen

  1. Click the ‘Give Control’ dropdown menu at the top of the screen you’re presenting.
  2. Click the name of the Attendee you want to grant control. ‘Give Conctrol Automatically’ gives your audience the ability to take control at their own leisure.
  3. When you’re finished, click ‘Stop Presenting’ on the top right of the screen.
