Welcome to the 90th entry into our monthly income and traffic report!

In this monthly update we share our traffic, earning, and spending figures for our blogs from the previous month so you can get a glimpse inside the business of blogging. In addition to sharing these for your use, by publishing our information we are also able to stay on track with our own goals for our business.

Prior to reading, it is worth noting that we feature two blogs in this report (one global travel and one local travel) and our income is based on the combined total of the two. We break down the traffic for each in this report for additional information.

June 2022 Travel Blog Traffic Report

Our traffic on Living the Dream for the month of June was roughly 30,750 page views. This was a decrease of 2.5% on a per day basis from May 2022 and an increase of 33% from June 2021.

Well, the massive runup in traffic had to stop sometime, and June appeared to be the month where things finally stalled likely due to an month-end algorithm tweak. That being said, despite being down a few percentage points from May, the 33% gain YOY is encouraging all the same.

As we just returned from a trip to four national parks in Colorado and Utah, we’re pretty eager to start cranking out more content to hit the USA travel market hard this summer. Will this improve our traffic from its current levels? We are excited to find out!

On the Discover the Burgh front, our traffic in June was approximately 184,300 page views- an increase of 7.3% on a per day basis from May 2022 and a decrease of 1.2% from June 2021.

Overall, June was a great month for us on our local blog as we saw a notable rise in traffic from May, partly due to strong social traffic. On the Google side of things, recent algorithm updates have been hurting independent blogs but seem to recover after a period of a few days or a few weeks. While our traffic from search is still great, our positions seem like they can stand to improve next month.

We will see what happens then!

June 2022 Travel Blog Income Report

Our booked income for June was approximately $15,200 – an increase of 84% on a per-day basis from May 2022 and an increase of 62% from June 2021. This income was approximately 90% from our local blog and 10% from our travel blog.

The breakdown includes the following:

*CPM Ads: $7,100
*Sponsored Campaigns: $6,500
*Affiliates: $1,600

Can we say second best month ever? I think we can. June 2022 was the second best month we’ve had on our site thanks to a lucrative sponsored campaign coming in for our local blog.

I am not going to share more details on this, but suffice it to say it is contracts like these as to why I say no to 99.99% of the nonsense sponsored content requests we get. When the big ones come, they almost always come because we do not overload our site with ads like that, and we end up coming out way, way ahead.

But if we ignore that for a moment, our base passive income for the month was also quite high. We would’ve beat May by about 5.5% and had been just shy of our June 2021 figure- all good things.

Now that we are into Q3, we expect this to go up even more!

Please note that the above is booked income. This is money that we have negotiated, contracted, and/or earned throughout the month but is not necessarily money that was received in-house. Payment for income can often range from a few minutes to several months (and, in some cases, can be canceled outright). While we track this for tax purposes, we only share booked income in this report.

July 2022 Expenses

Our dedicated blog expenses* for the month of June were roughly $236, with the following breakdown:

*Social Media Ads: $150
*Programs: $86

While things are going nicely, I had some major personal expenses creep up on my in the last few months and needed to cut my business spending down a fair bit to cover. As such, we went streamlined this month for dedicated blog expenses.

*We do not share our travel/local expenses in this report. This can be anywhere from $100-$3,000+ per month extra, but your mileage may vary as the costs to generate content can vary wildly from blog to blog. We strive to only share true blog operating expenses here.

July 2022 Goals

Guess what? I have no travel planned for July. None. Zero. No wine exams, no workcations, no vacations, no visiting family, nothing.

So while I was only home for what felt like five days in all of June, I have 31 beautiful days at home in July to spend churning out content, getting caught up on back-end projects, and more.

I intend to make this month count, hard.

In the past, on a busy week I have been able to get 10-12 articles out across all my five sites (yes, five- I only have two travel related ones that are featured here). I intend to keep this pace for the entirety of July and hopefully August to really help boost our income figures as mentioned above!

Wish me luck.

Looking For Past Reports?

Unlike other websites that host an article series on this topic, we only have one article for our travel blog income and traffic reports.

We do this for a number of reasons, but it is mostly because we do not want dozens upon dozens of posts on our site on this one specific topic. Over time, the monthly details become irrelevant and trends are the only thing that matters.

To compensate for this, we update this article every month based on our current data and publish a graphical summary of previous months as well. If you have any questions about data from a specific month we are happy to share more details via email if you contact us.
