The top ten Electric Pokémon, ranked

When it comes to doing one job, and doing it well, look no further than Electric Pokémon. With just one weakness to Ground-types, they should be great defensive Pokémon, but in actuality, the situation is reversed. Electric-types are often glass cannons, with blinding speed and great attack, but no staying power putting them in a strange position.

From a design perspective, they tend to look quite sharp. Like with everything, there are exceptions, but the jagged look of a lightning bolt translates well onto most Pokémon designs, making them easily identifiable at a glance. The best Electric Pokémon look powerful and aggressive, while still retaining a sense of cute charm.

Miraidon

This is an odd case because, as of writing, we don’t officially know what type Miraidon is after the latest Pokémon Scarlet & Violet trailer. This Legendary Pokémon is a futuristic snake/dragon beast that has all the markings of an Electric-type. Its eyes are digital displays, it has lightning bolts coming out of its head, and it fits thematically in contrast with Koraidon’s more traditional look. We will be shocked if this isn’t an Electric-type, but it looks awesome either way.

Jolteon

Eeveelutions are almost cheating. Of course they’re going to make it onto a list like this because they’re all examples of perfect Pokémon design. Eevee is about as cute as Pokémon gets, and when it evolves all you need to do is add a few distinct features of the type in question. In Jolteon’s case, it looks like it stuck its paw in an electrical socket but it works, giving it a cool edge.

Vikavolt

A Pokémon from Generation 7 that many people may have forgotten about, but it deserves some time in the spotlight. There are only two fully evolved Electric/Bug Pokémon, so each of them does something unique. Vikavolt looks like the angriest wasp you’ve ever seen, and that’s before it charges up its railgun of a mouth.

Toxtricity

Despite being one of the most awkwardly named Pokémon of Generation 8, Toxtricity has a strong enough design to stand out from Sword & Shield’s strong cast. It may be a touch too humanoid for some people’s tastes, but the purple and yellow contrast perfectly to create a powerful, but subdued design. The fact it has an alternate form gets it bonus points too.

Ampharos

Look at this guy, what an adorable face, it’ll bring a smile to anyone’s face. Then it Mega-Evolves and grows wild flowing hair, what’s not love?

Rotom

Despite a lot of Ghost-types having possession abilities, they don’t have the opportunity to express that in the gameplay, so it’s great that Rotom gets a way to show it off. Its base form is really simple, but that’s what we like about it, and the way it uses the bolts as arms is very sweet. Its various forms all look a bit weird, but that’s the point, plus the ability to change type is a huge boon.

Raikou

When your name translates to “Thunder King”, you know you’ve got it made. Sabre-tooth tigers are cool animals at the best of times, so charging one up with electricity for a Legendary Pokémon is bound to be a recipe for success. Bringing the traditional tiger orange up to yellow works with the purple cape and light-blue tail, it’s the kind of threatening animal you wouldn’t want to get too close to, but seeing it in a nature documentary would have you glued to the screen.

Pikachu

It’s fashionable in the Pokémon fanbase to drag Pikachu and talk about how Raichu’s way better, but let’s be real here. Pikachu has carried the franchise on its back for over two decades, everyone knows what this little guy looks like, so he’s got to be doing something right. Raichu is an awesome Pokémon, but Pikachu’s had over 25 years of careful refinement to make him as appealing as humanly possible and it has absolutely worked.

Tapu Koko

Pokemon Tapu KokoPokemon Tapu Koko

The Tapus are some of the most thematically brilliant Pokémon around. The way they manage to be so bright and colourful, all feeling distinct while sticking to a very clear theme is masterful design work. Tapu Koko is arguably the best of the bunch, with a grand orange mohawk and arm attachments that are simultaneously shields and boxing gloves.

Luxray

LuxrayLuxray

Luxray is a brilliantly designed Pokémon on its own, but when combined with the rest of its evolution line, it is perhaps the perfect example of how a three-stage evolution line should progress from one to the next. Shinx is the very definition of adorable. Then Luxio steps that up, keeping the key features but adding in some threat. Finally, Luxray leans into the sharp and cool factors for a Pokémon that stands as a force to be reckoned with but still feels like it could be your good buddy.
