The yin-yang philosophy plays an important role in all areas of the life of Oriental people in general and of Vietnamese people in particular. Every nation has been involved in pairs of contrasting concepts related to yin – yang [2, tr 52]. This is reflected in language, vocabulary and syntax. Today, the yin – yang philosophy has not only been the focus of investigation and application for many people but also explained step by step and manipulated based on scientific grounds. This paper is aimed at explaining the influence of the yin – yang philosophy on the formation of Vietnamese symmetric compound words in two major aspects: first, every compound has its yin – yang character; second, the yin-yang philosophy governs the structure (or arrangement) of the components in a compound word.
