Reset network settings in Windows 7

Method 1: Using the troubleshooting tool

Previously, Windows 7 users had the EasyFix utility available to solve a wide variety of computer problems automatically. Now its functionality is fully integrated into the standard troubleshooter. It will reset the network protocols by itself if there is any network connection problem. In case there is no problem and you want to restart for other reasons, use Method 2.

  1. Open “Starts”. and through the panel on the right, go to “Control Panel”..
  2. Click on the tile “Problem solving”. If you cannot find it due to differences in the display of the parameters when comparing them with the following image, please change the line “Vista”.which is in the upper right, to the value of “Big icons”.
  3. Among all the tools available, look for the section “Network and Internet”In this case, select an option “Connect to the Internet”..
  4. The Troubleshooting and Diagnostics screen will appear, where you can immediately proceed to the next step.
  5. Click on the first option – “Internet connection troubleshooting”.

Wait for the scan to complete – it usually doesn’t take long. The screen will tell you what action has been taken and what effect it has had on network access. If more information is displayed with instructions, follow them, completing the troubleshooting process.

Method 2: Manually Reset Network Settings

To manually reset the network settings of your operating system, you will only need to know a few console commands and enter them one at a time, restarting your computer on demand.

  1. Find “Command line”. in any way, such as through the menu “Start”..
  2. Make sure to run it as administrator so you don’t get notification of insufficient permissions when executing commands.
  3. Enter the command netsh winsock reset and confirm it by pressing the key I went into.
  4. A message will appear stating that the directory reset was successful, and then it will send the computer to restart, thus applying the changes after the reset.
  5. If this is not enough, you will have to enter the command netsh int ip reset c:resetlog.txtwhich is responsible for resetting the global IP and the IP interface.
  6. The status of both parameters should be displayed «OK» – you must now restart your computer again.
  7. The commands just described affect all zones on the network except DNS, so you will have to type another command – ipconfig /flushdnsto reset these settings as well.
  8. In this case, wait to be notified that the operation was successful, and the PC may not restart.

Method 3: Change the network location

In some cases, resetting the network settings involves changing the location of the network. This action installs new settings, which may be what the user needs. There is a quick option to change settings that does not take long.

  1. Open again. “Starts”. and invoke “Control Panel”..
  2. This time, click “Center network and sharing”.
  3. Under the insignia. “Net”. there will be a line “Home network.”, “Public network”. o “Network of work”.Click on that.
  4. In the window. “Configure the network location” select a new option for the network by reading the descriptions of each one.
  5. The connection will start, and you can only close the window when you are notified that the location has been changed successfully.

Method 4: Check the protocols in the adapter configuration

As a last working method, we advise you to familiarize yourself with the configuration change of your network adapter. It does not involve a hard reset of the network, but it will reset the TCP / IP and DNS server to the default state if the user has made any changes.

  1. In the same menu. “Center network and sharing” click on the left line “Change adapter parameters”.
  2. Right-click on the adapter in use and use the context menu to go to “Properties”..
  3. There, find the article “Internet Protocol version 4”., highlight it and click the button «Properties».
  4. Configure to automatically obtain the IP address and DNS servers settings, and then apply the settings.

If the network administration is not done by you, but by another specialist, for example, in your office, it is very possible that it is he who has changed the configuration, so you should not return it to the original position. It is better to consult the system administrator to resolve the situation.
