Pokémon: 10 Best Non-Legendary Electric-Types In The Series, Ranked

There are a lot of types in Pokémon and Electric-types are shockingly good; here are the best non-legendary ones in the series!

In the world of Pokémon, Electric-types are beloved; just look at Jolteon, or series mascot Pikachu, to see what we mean. They’re cool, they’re dangerous, and most of all, they are yellow (the color of electricity, according to Game Freak).

Electric Pokémon are often unusually fast and supercharged with high special attack stats. It’s the perfect formula for a sweeper; a Pokémon who quickly KOs opponents before taking any damage. Electric is also a solid offensive type in that it hits two extremely common types (Water and Flying) super-effectively. Then there’s Paralysis, a useful status that’s intrinsically linked to the Electric-type. For those who still aren’t convinced of this type’s greatness, maybe some of these electrifying Pokémon will seal the deal!

Lanturn

Since its introduction in Generation II, Lanturn has held one of the best type combinations in the entire game. Thanks to its Water typing, it can use STAB moves like Scald or Surf to take out Ground-type Pokémon that would normally pose a huge threat. In turn, the Electric-type resists itself, covering one of the Water-type’s biggest weaknesses.

However, Lanturn is severely held back by its poor stats, notably its Defense and Speed. Though most enemies will struggle to hit it super-effectively, a few solid hits from normal attacks will likely take it down anyway.

Galvantula

One of the most powerful Electric-type moves, Thunder, is also one of the most unreliable moves in the game. Compare it to Earthquake, which has 100 Power and 100 Accuracy. Thunder has an improved power of 110, but a severely reduced Accuracy of 70. Any Pokémon that can boost this accuracy has an immediate leg up. Or, in Galvantula’s case, eight legs up.

Galvantula has access to the ability of Compound Eyes. This boosts its accuracy, turning Thunder from a frustrating mess of a move into something truly amazing. Its secondary Bug-typing helps it resist Ground damage, but it also introduces many new weaknesses. Bug just isn’t a great type. This, along with Galvantula’s frustratingly low bulk, holds it back from greatness.

Alolan Raichu

Raichu’s Alolan form is mostly known for being adorable, but it’s also a decent threat in battle. Its unique ability Surge Surfer grants it a massive Speed boost in Electric Terrain. Note that Raichu’s base speed is nothing to sneeze at. When taking advantage of Electric Terrain, Alolan Raichu is capable of out-speeding just about any other Pokémon.

Another nice thing about Alolan Raichu is its second type, Psychic. Though it doesn’t offer much help defensively, it does let Raichu go toe-to-toe with troublesome Fighting and Poison-types. Overall, Alolan Raichu’s coverage options and intense speed make it a viable sweeper, though it’s held back by its reliance on Electric Terrain.

Jolteon

In Generation 1, when Special Attack and Special Defense were combined into a single stat, Jolteon was one of the best Pokémon in the game. Over the years, however, its usefulness has faded. Lack of updates to its move pool has left it stagnant compared to an evolving meta-game. Furthermore, its Defense and HP stats are practically nonexistent, making it frail.

Despite these weaknesses, Jolteon’s impressive Speed and respectable Special Attack do give it some options to work with. Thunderbolt is its offensive move of choice, and like other Eevee-lutions, it can run some decent sets with moves like Toxic, Substitute, and Wish. Still, it’s overshadowed by the likes of Vaporeon, Umbreon, and Sylveon.

Toxtricity

Toxtricity is a new Pokémon introduced in Sword & Shield; an Electric/Poison dual-type capable of dishing out impressive amounts of damage. Its two types don’t complement each other particularly well, but both of them are useful to have. We’ve already described our love of Electricity, and Poison is highly useful for targeting Fairy-types.

Toxtricity has two forms, with slightly different move pools. Thankfully both of them have access to Boomburst, a sound-based move with 100 Accuracy and 140 Power. Both forms also get access to the Punk Rock ability, boosting the damage of sound-based moves by 30%. Furthermore, Toxtricity’s acceptable bulk means it’s capable of taking a hit or two.

Arctozolt

Arctozolt is a cool fossil Pokémon from Sword & Shield. Its dual-typing, Ice/Electric, is a double-edged sword. On one hand, Ice provides a reliable counter for the Ground type. It’s also a good all-around offensive type, providing Arctozolt opportunities to hit intimidating Dragon-type Pokémon with super effective S.T.A.B. moves. Bolt Beak and Blizzard can both dish out tons of damage.

On the other hand, in terms of defense, Ice is abysmal. Fighting and Fire, two of the most prevalent types in the game, both hit it super-effectively. For Arctozolt, this issue is exacerbated by its reliance on Slush Rush to improve its sluggish Speed. This ability only activates when it’s hailing, so hail is practically required when switching in.

4

Heat Rotom

Fire and Electric is a pretty solid type combination. Electric can typically cover Water-type Pokémon, which would normally stamp out Fire-types. On its own, Fire is one of the best types in the entire game, with tons of resistance and checks for some extremely common types. For these reasons, Heat Rotom is a valuable addition to any team.

Of course, as a type combination, Fire/Electric has one major issue: its quadruple weakness to Ground-type damage. Not that Rotom cares. Its ability, Levitate, makes it completely immune to the Ground type. With moves like Overheat, Toxic, and Volt Switch, Heat Rotom can be just as much of a pain to deal with as its mischievous reputation implies.

3

Wash Rotom

Earlier, we touched on why Water/Electric is one of the best type combinations of all time. Only a small handful of Pokémon have this coveted dual type, and Wash Rotom is by far the most notable example.

Like Heat Rotom, Wash Rotom gets Levitate, granting it immunity to Ground-type damage. Because of this, it has only one weakness: the Grass-type. Despite Rotom’s notably poor bulk, it remains viable thanks to its decent Speed andVolt Switch pivot capability. Hydro Pump gives it some excellent damage potential, and Defog can help it clear entry hazards for the rest of its team.

2

Dracozolt

Like Arctozolt, Dracozolt is a recently introduced fossil Pokémon. Unlike Arctozolt, it has an improved Speed stat and an all-around better defensive type combination: Electric/Dragon.

Dracozolt not only looks cool, but it also boasts a powerful moveset and the stats to back it up. Bolt Beak takes advantage of its Speed, doubling to an incredible 170 base power when it goes first.

To ensure this bonus is gained, Dracozolt can take advantage of the weather to improve its Speed, the same as Arctozolt. Rather than in hail, its ability activates in sandstorms. It pairs very well with Sand Stream Pokémon such as Tyranitar and Hippowdon. Of course, its reliance on weather is still a detriment, as its Speed is pretty disappointing outside the right conditions.

1

Magnezone

The ability Magnet Pull is one of the best options in the game for strategically removing opposing Steel-type Pokémon, and this Electric/Steel-type is the most notable Pokémon to get it. Aside from this, Magnezone’s beefy Defense can be buffed with the move Iron Defense, leaving certain foes unable to dent it. Coupled with Toxic, Magnezone is one of the most impressive walls in Pokémon history.

The key to using Magnezone is deploying it at the correct time. Its slow Speed and relatively low Special Defense can leave it vulnerable to surprise Special attacks. Its main utility lies in trapping and removing powerful Steel Pokémon, effectively letting it defend teammates that would be destroyed by Steel-type threats.
