Nintendo Support: How to Create a Nintendo Network ID on Wii U

Important: Make sure that your system is set to the before beginning this process.

Information

A Nintendo Network ID (NNID) can be set up when creating a new Mii profile on the Wii U, or the NNID can be linked to an existing profile.

  • The Wii U must be connected to the Internet to set up a Nintendo Network ID.
  • Each Nintendo Network ID can be associated to one Nintendo 3DS and one Wii U console.

Complete these steps

  1. How old is the person that the account is for?
    12 and under
    13 and over

  2. Do you live in the United States or Canada, or elsewhere?
    US or Canada
    Elsewhere

    1. Access the User Settings on an existing Mii, and select .
      • If you are creating a new user account on the system, select Add New User from the Wii U User Select screen.
    2. Select Next to proceed through the screens.
    3. When asked if you already have a Nintendo Network ID, select No.
      • If you already have a Nintendo Network ID that you would like to use, follow these steps to link the existing Nintendo Network ID.
      • If you are uncertain whether you have already created a Nintendo Network ID, select I Don’t Know and review the information.
    4. Select Next.
    5. If you have not yet associated a Mii to this account, you will be prompted to create a Mii character or select one that has already been created.
      • Select an Existing Mii
        1. Tap Choose a Mii from Mii Maker.
        2. Select the Mii you want to use, then select Register twice.
        3. Select OK to confirm.
        4. Once the Mii has been registered, select Next.
        5. When asked if you would like to create a new NNID, select Link.
      • Create a New Mii
        1. Tap Create/Receive.
        2. Choose to create a Mii , create a Mii , to import a Mii, or to import a Mii.
        3. Once the Mii has been registered, select Next.
        4. When asked if you would like to create a new NNID, select Link.
    6. Choose your language.
    7. Read through the Nintendo Network Agreement. Select I Accept to agree to the terms.
      • If you are under 18, a parent or legal guardian must accept this agreement before you can proceed.
    8. Select OK to continue.
    9. Enter your birthdate, then select Next.
    10. Select your gender, your state or province, and the time zone where you live. Tap OK to continue.
    11. Enter a Nintendo Network ID, then select OK twice to continue.
      • The Nintendo Network ID is a unique name that will represent you on the Nintendo Network. This can be different than the name you have given your Mii character.
      • The ID you choose will be visible to others using online services. Please do not include any personal information or offensive content in your ID.
      • Please choose your ID carefully – once it’s set, it cannot be changed.
      • The Nintendo Network ID should be between 6 and 16 characters long, and can contain letters, numbers, periods, dashes, and underscores.
      • Punctuation cannot be used as the first or last character of the ID. Also, two or more punctuation characters cannot be used in a row.
    12. Enter a password for the Nintendo Network ID, then select OK
      • The password you choose should be between 6 and 16 characters long.
      • Passwords must use a combination of characters from two of the following categories: letters, numbers, and punctuation.
      • You cannot use the name you chose for your Nintendo Network ID as your password.
      • The same character cannot be used three or more times in a row.
      • For security, you should not use passwords that can be easily guessed or that you have used for other services.
    13. Enter the password one more time to verify. Select OK twice to continue.
    14. Verify whether you’d like to be able to access Nintendo Network services from other devices (smartphones, PC’s) where applicable.
    15. Enter your e-mail address. Select OK.
    16. Enter your e-mail address one more time to verify, then select OK.
    17. Verify whether you would like to receive promotional e-mail communications from Nintendo and its partners.
    18. Review the information you’ve entered to verify that it is correct. Select OK twice to confirm.
      • If any information needs to be changed, select Change in the appropriate area and make any needed updates.
    19. The Nintendo Network icon should now appear next to your Mii on the User Select screen.
    20. A confirmation e-mail will be sent to the e-mail address you provided. Follow the instructions in the e-mail to .
    21. Once the Nintendo Network ID is created, it can also be linked to a Nintendo 3DS system.
  3. If you live in the United States or Canada and wish to create a Nintendo Network ID for a child, please contact us by calling 1-800-255-3700 any time between 6:00 AM and 7:00 PM Pacific Time, seven days a week.

    1. Access the User Settings on an existing Mii, and select .

    6. Choose your language.

    10. Important: The following step must be completed by a Parent or Guardian.

    11. You will be prompted to enter your Parental Control PIN. Tap OK.
      • If you have not yet set up a , you will be asked to set one up at this point.
    12. Select No to verify that you do not live in the United States or Canada.
    13. Select your gender, your state or province, and the time zone where you live. Tap OK to continue.
    14. Enter a Nintendo Network ID, then select OK twice to continue.
