Free Cell Phone Tour Celebrates Local Heritage

Visitors to Princess Anne can now experience the authentic Eastern Shore in Princess Anne – the rich heritage of our historic community using their own cell phones. Hear the stories of freemen and slaves, innkeepers, merchants and more. The tour highlights over 300 years of Princess Anne history from the Colonial era, Revolutionary, Civil and World Wars, the heyday of steamboat travel, the arrival of the railroad and the first “talking” picture show. 

The FREE Heritage Cell Phone tour, the first of its kind on the Eastern Shore, features 68 stories and 40 sites about the people and historic places throughout the town.

Prepare to be entertained, amused, and informed!

• Hear stories of the rich and famous, including Littleton Dennis Teackle and his wife Elizabeth who built their estate Teackletonia in 1805.

• Learn the uplifting history of the African American founders of the Metropolitan Methodist Church who built their house of worship on the site of the former slave auction block.

• Relive stories of the famed Washington Hotel, a Town fixture for over 200 years, when grog was paid for in shillings and pence.

• Enjoy the beauty of the boxwood garden – over 160 years old, hear about its history and plantings, and learn about the woman who created it.

• And, laugh at some amusing stories that have been entertaining locals and visitors for decades.
