How to setup the PRTG Network Monitor

Many of our customers approach us to add the domain in PRTG to monitor the website. Let’s see how our Support Engineers set up the PRTG Network Monitor.

1. Initially, we download PRTG from the Paessler website and install it on a Windows computer.

2. Then we double-click the setup file on the computer.

3. After that, we follow the installation wizard and install the software.

4. At the end of the installation, we open the PRTG in a new browser window.

5. Then we load the PRTG web interface with one of the officially supported browsers like Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox and Microsoft Internet Explorer. We recommend Google Chrome to access the PRTG web interface.

6. In the browser, we have to log in manually. The default administrator credentials such as Login Name and Password as prtgadmin are automatically filled.

7. Then we click Login to proceed.

Then we can see the device tree. The device tree is the list of several devices with sensors that monitor the network and it sorted into different suitable groups. PRTG automatically creates the device tree during the installation process

8. Then in the Settings tab, we enter administrator credentials for the network environment to automatically adds the additional devices and sensors to the device tree.

9. Then we enter the location of our PRTG core server and click Ok.

10. After that, we change the login credentials.

By default, the login name and password are prtgadmin. So we strongly recommend changing the password as part of protecting PRTG from unauthorized access.

11. Also, we check whether the email address that we entered during the installation is correct.

This is how we set up the PRTG network monitor. Also, we strongly recommend that to run the PRTG web interface using SSL encryption.

Finally, we provide the domain name in the Add Sensor+ option in PRTG.

Asking License information while installing

PRTG always validates the license information during the installation process through the activation server. Sometimes PRTG asks the License Name and Key if there is any problem with the trial installation.

In such cases, we go to the Paessler website and access the URL https://www.paessler.com/download.

Then we enter both License Name and License Key received from the Paessler website.

Also, note that in some cases the antivirus software like Windows Defender blocks the PRTG installation. In that case, we temporarily disable such antivirus software for installing PRTG.
