How The New Porsche Electric Macan Is The SUV To Beat

The Porsche Macan has served as the primary extension to the German automaker’s capitalization of the current consumer desire for an SUV. The Cayenne, as great as it is, is likely too big for most families and the Macan slotted in perfectly to fill the gap. A very usable and practical car, the Macan has boomed in popularity.

With the success of the all-electric Taycan, Porsche is on a quest to offer an electric product in every category in which they compete. With huge investments and the business venture with Rimac, the German marque is certainly devoting more time, money, and effort to make their electric products the best.

With spy shots seemingly everywhere, the Macan EV has been undergoing thorough testing. From what we know so far, it certainly looks good, and we believe with the correct technology, it could be the best Electric SUV on the market.

Why The Porsche Macan Is A Great Compact SUV

The Porsche Macan is advertised and marketed as a crossover. And while it may just be thrown in the SUV category, the Macan in fact offers so much more to any potential customer. As one of Porches’ most popular products, the Macan accounted for a total of 40,000 of Porsche’s global 2022 sales of 300,000 units.

5 seats with adult-sized legroom, a plush and tech-filled interior, and a great lump of an engine, the Macan ticks most boxes for a very nice daily driver. The proposal of buying a Macan is only drawn back by the fact that like any Porsche, it’s quite pricey.

Even though there are rival SUVs that are much roomier, the Macan packs decent space for a Porsche. Even the Cayenne beats it by far, but that’s by design since the Macan is supposed to be the compact little sibling. The Macan doesn’t skimp in the U in SUV, it’s equipped to handle any terrain you throw at it. Four-wheel drive is standard, and customizing the vehicle’s adaptive suspension and throttle response mean that prepping for off-roading is as easy as pressing a button.

The Incoming Porsche Macan EV

Porsche was due to begin sales of the Macan EV in 2023. However, the vehicle has been pushed back until 2024 due to problems with its newly developed software platform. This setback could also cause a delay in the introduction of the brand’s all-electric versions of the 718 Cayman and Cayenne. Porsche’s goal of 80% BEV by 2030 is already facing some uncertainty.

Porsche indicated that it will be equipped with the same 800-volt charging tech as found in the Taycan with DC fast charging ability of around 270 kW. From this, we can expect at least an equal range as the Porsche Taycan. A top-spec model with a 300+ mile range could be unlikely as the Macan EV’s underpinnings use the Porsche-Audi PPE (Premium Platform Electric) platform which can’t support a larger battery.

They aim to equip the upcoming electric Macan with a 100 kWh battery pack which will have a usable capacity somewhere between 96 kWh and 98 kWh. This will be the only battery on offer. The overall design is smoother and more futuristic than the current internal combustion Macan. The interior will likely look much like the current Taycan, the car which it seems has served Porsche as a very good test bed for a debut electric product.

How The Macan EV Will Change The SUV Market?

Up until now, there have been a handful of cars that perfectly translate from internal combustion to EV. We believe that the Macan could be one of the best, and likely the best in its category. For not much more than a brand new Tesla Model Y, we believe the Macan will offer the customer a better overall ownership experience. The Porsche SUV will be built better, ride better and look better.

While we can’t be sure of final performance figures yet, the numerous Nurburgring spy shots do tell us that Porsche isn’t forgetting to put the Sports in SUV. Tesla’s Model Y, BMW iX4, and the Mercedes-Benz EQC are all luxury SUV competitors for the Macan. It’s a strong selection, with the fiercest competition in terms of market share being the Tesla Model Y, the US’s best-selling electric vehicle.

If customers can live with the fact that Porsche doesn’t have the same supercharger network infrastructure as Tesla, then it could easily work its way up the ranks. Although Porsche has always been a luxury brand, its direct rivals are likely to be the Germans in the field and maybe a wildcard in the shape of Polestar’s upcoming 3. We think that going off Porsche’s strong debut into EVs that the Macan EV will be the electric crossover to beat.
