Grow Your Business with These Business Mindset Tips

Did you know you could be your own worst enemy when it comes to achieving success in your business?

While this may sound a little crazy, hear me out: how and what you think – both about yourself and your business – can have a huge impact on your ability to achieve success.

In this post, I’m going to share 10 business mindset tips that will help you change your frame of mind, grow your business, and STILL have a life!

10 Top Business Mindset Tips

As you work your way through this list, I’d encourage you to jot down the tips that really resonate with you…because these are more than likely the ones you need to work on the most!

1. Keep Your Eye on the People You Serve

This is a great tip to keep in mind when you find yourself feeling discouraged or overwhelmed.

Think about who you help through your business: What are they struggling with? How do your products or services help them? What can you do TODAY to help them?

This could be just the motivation you need to feel re-energized and to change your frame of mind!

2. Be Courageous as You Set Goals

Setting goals is one thing. But do you set goals that actually require courage?

You know the old saying: “If you don’t set goals you’ll never achieve them”.

Well, if you don’t set BIG goals, you’ll never achieve those either!

What goals can you set today that requires risk, but that is still attainable? That will stretch you a bit, without completely overwhelming you?

3. Focus on ONE Thing at a Time

As a small business owner, it’s easy to get distracted by all the things you COULD be doing: email, social media, writing a blog post, taking out the dog, organizing your office…the list goes on and on!

And the problem is, these are all GOOD things!

But what you’ll find is that if you can focus on just one thing, you’ll often get stuff done more quickly, and the work you produce will often be of higher quality.

However, in order to do this, you first need to let go of the belief that you have to be on top of Every. Single. Thing, at every single moment of the day!

Make a habit of deciding what ONE THING you’re going to do right now, and then focus 100% of your attention on that thing until you’re done!

4. Think About Your Vision

If you find your primary business mindset is, “How can I make more money?” or “How can I get more clients?”, this could definitely be sabotaging your success!

While you obviously need to consider how to earn an income through your business, if this is the first or only thing on your mind, you’re doomed for failure.

Instead, keep your eye on WHY you do what you do…what is it about your clients, customers or business that you’re so passionate about?

Focusing on your why will not help you develop a successful mindset, it will naturally draw people to you and to your business!

5. Be Thankful for What You Have and How Far You’ve Come

While it can be easy to focus on what you want to achieve in your business – and get discouraged about how you’re not there yet – this can make you lose sight of how far you’ve come.

Take some time right now to think about all you’ve accomplished in the past months or years. Here are some questions to guide you:

  • Who have you helped?
  • Have you created something that you’re proud of?
  • What kind of impact have you made in your work, your family, and your community?
  • Is something happening in your business and life, right now, that you’re thankful for?

Make a point of thinking about these things rather than focusing on how far you still want to go!

6. Failure Isn’t the End

Oh boy!  If you take one thing from these business mindset tips today, let it be this!

Winston Churchill said, “Success is not final, failure is not fatal”.

More often than not, success in your business will come AFTER a failure of some sort.

So, rather than beating yourself up, or worse – giving up completely – use your past failure(s) as a guide to show you what to do differently next time.

7. Help Others Succeed

Sometimes as business owners we get (understandably) caught up in our own stuff.

But if we can shift our mindset from “How can I succeed” to “How can I help others succeed”, this will go a long way to keeping us motivated, excited, and behaving authentically in our business.

If you’re feeling stuck or hopeless today, think about ONE person you can help today: it could be a friend, client, or colleague. And instead of staying wrapped up in your own stuff, spend a few minutes thinking about how you can help them succeed today!

8. Know You Can’t Do it All Perfectly

Somehow, many of us have this idea that it’s possible to balance our businesses and lives seamlessly, without ever “dropping the ball”.

But guess what? It’s just not possible to succeed in business and life 100% of the time!

Rather than getting down on yourself every time you make a mistake or don’t “do it all” perfectly, remind yourself that this is all part of the deal.

You WON’T do it all perfectly, all the time, and that’s okay! Do your absolute best, and then remind yourself that no one – NO ONE – balances work and life without messing up sometimes.

9. Find Ways to Work Smarter

Many small business owners have this belief that you can only really grow a business if you put in more and more hours and effort.

However, if you’re like most of the business owners I work with, you already work WAY too hard!

Instead, I’d encourage you to adopt a mindset of working smarter.

How can you use systems to automate parts of your business?

How can you outsource day-to-day tasks so you can spend more time growing your business?

What tasks are you currently doing that really aren’t building your business – and how can you let these go?

10. Turn Your Business and Brain “Off” for the Night!

If you want to build a business, have a life, and do it all while still maintaining your sanity, I strongly recommend taking time away from your computer, phone and office each and every day!

I get it…when you love what you do, it’s easy to spend WAY too much time working.

The problem with this is that not only does your efficiency and productivity start to wane at a certain point, but you’re setting yourself up for burnout.

To avoid this, try one (or all!) of the following this week:

  • Take your business email off your phone so you’re not tempted to check it at night
  • Turn off email and social media notifications, and only check them at set times
  • Have a set time each night when you’re officially “off work”. While this can be hard – especially if you work from home – having some downtime will actually make you more productive and energetic when you do work!

Having the Right Mindset in Your Business Leads to Success

How you think about your work and your life can have a huge impact on whether or not you succeed in business.

I find that first noticing negative or self-limiting thoughts – and then replacing them with empowering ones – is the KEY if you want to stop sabotaging your business!
