Foreign Trade University – Education Abroad Office | University of South Carolina
Foreign Trade University (FTU) is one of the top universities in Vietnam. Established
in 1960, FTU has gained enormous achievement in providing talented and high quality
human resources to the economy and thus made great contribution to the industrialization,
modernization and global economic integration of Vietnam.
This exchange is limited to students from the Moore School of Business majoring in
International Business. As a prerequisite, students must have attained at least junior
standing prior to attending FTU. FTU is a Language Category 1 exchange. Only USC undergraduate
students are eligible to participate in this program.
Category: 1, no foreign language proficiency requirement, all courses taught in English
Cost: UofSC resident tuition rates + in-country costs
Requirements: junior standing; International Business major
Students on exchange pay in-state tuition directly to USC and do not pay tuition to
FTU. All housing, food, and personal expenses are paid by the student in Hanoi. Students’
living expenses can vary depending on the individual student’s lifestyle and accomodations.
To get an idea of life on site, you will find on the numbeo website indications on the cost of living in Vietnam compared to other countries
in the world.
FTU offers a wide range of majors in economics, business, business administration,
finance and banking and business foreign languages. A list of tentative undergraduate courses can be found online, but be aware that the course list is subject to change between
semesters. A list with exact courses offered will be released about 4 weeks before
the starting date of the semester.
To see courses UofSC students have taken at this university, please reference the
Registrar’s Course Equivalency Table.
The program does not offer organized excursions, but students do have the opportunity
for individual travel.
Per university policy, all UofSC students will be charged emergency medical, evacuation
and repatriation insurance for their time abroad. Contact the Education Abroad Office for more details.
Students participating in the FTU exchange will be able to live in FTU dormitories,
a student village, private accommodation, or a homestay when there are spaces available.
FTU dormitories are shared between 4-6 students and equipped with bunk beds, bathrooms,
and kitchens. The HACINCO student village is a complex for students from universities
around Hanoi. The village is about a 10 minute bus ride from the university and there
are a wide variety of room styles to choose from. The price range for this varies
from 100 to 250 USD per month. Private accommodation suggestions will be emailed to
exchange students by the international office before departure.
The spring semester starts at the beginning of January and ends in late June. Exact
dates of the program will be provided each year by FTU.
FTU will hold a week-long orientation program for exchange students upon arrival to
help students get situation with life in Hanoi. Students will learn more about the
facilities around campus, best ways to get around, and about the many extraccuricular
clubs at FTU.
Students who attend FTU for a semester must apply for a Vietnamese student visa (Category DH). Upon approval by FTU, they will send a letter of invitation to accepted
students, which will be used to apply for the DH visa. FTU will submit documents to
the Immigration Department in Vietnam to get a visa reference number, and they will
forward this to the Embassy of Vietnam in the U.S. Students can expect to receive
both the letter of invitation and the visa reference number about 1.5 months after
the FTU application deadline. Visa applications can be sent in via mail, and students
should not need to appear to the Embassy in person.
