What Else Can Impact My Esurance Premium?

Esurance premiums can vary based on many factors, including how much you drive your car, where you live, your past driving record, and even your credit score. Let’s take a closer look.

How Much You Drive

How many miles you drive will affect your Esurance car insurance rate. The less time you spend behind the wheel, the lower your rate. According to Savvy, drivers that fall within the 3,000 to 5,999 miles a year bracket can expect to pay just $128.91 a month for Esurance on average. Those driving more than 20,000 miles a year will set aside $227.

Location

According to Savvy, the states with the cheapest insurance rates are Maine, Hawaii, Idaho, Wyoming, and Iowa. Those with the most expensive car insurance rates are New York; Rhode Island; Washington, D.C.; Maryland; and Louisiana.

DUI

Like other insurers, Esurance increases rates for drivers with DUI citations.

According to a study by The Zebra, a DUI typically increases insurance premiums more than any common driving violation. For example, a cell phone violation will get you a $288 premium increase, while speeding will bump up your rate by $308 on average. Reckless driving will result in a $1,034 rate bump, but a DUI will likely cost you about $1,086.

A DUI will also make you ineligible for any good or safe driver discounts.

Car Accident

Causing a collision or another car accident will also impact your insurance premium at Esurance.

According to The Zebra, most insurance premiums increase by 50% following a car accident. This penalty can last up to three years and add as much as $6,000 to $7,000 per year.

Credit Score

Unusually, in some states, drivers with very poor FICO scores pay up to 150% more for car insurance than their counterparts with exceptional credit. That’s the case in states like New York and Missouri. Esurance coverage is available in both of these states.

This practice is rooted in some studies that have correlated poor and very poor credit scores with high-risk driving behaviors. However, this method has been deemed illegal in four states.

How Satisfied Are Esurance Insurance Customers?

Although it offers a variety of insurance types and discounts, Esurance has received mixed customer satisfaction results. The most recent J.D. Power study on claims satisfaction gave the insurer an average rating. It did not rate it in customer satisfaction.

The National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) gave Esurance a poor rating. This rating signifies that the insurer received significantly more complaints than average.

Some other websites have rated Customer Satisfaction at Esurance:

  • ConsumerAffairs: 3.9 out of 5 stars (1,269 customers – up from 2020)
  • Better Business Bureau (BBB): A- (up from 2020)

Esurance Financial Strength and Background

Esurance has an A+ (superior) rating from A.M. Best on the financial side which means that the company won’t have any financial troubles paying out claims.

Founded in 1999 and owned by Allstate, Esurance was one of the first companies to offer online insurance services. Headquartered in San Francisco, it services 43 states but offers no walk-in locations.

Before you sign on to car insurance, make sure you check rates with different providers to compare, especially when purchasing a new or used vehicle. That way, you can find the provider that works best for you.
