Pierce Transit:
Charging Ahead with All-Electric Buses

Pierce Transit has long been a leader in providing clean, environmentally-friendly public transportation. In the 1980s we were among the first transit agency in the nation to move most of our fleet to running on Compressed Natural Gas (CNG). Today 85 percent of Pierce Transit’s bus fleet runs on CNG, 13 percent are hybrid-electric, 5 percent are battery-electric and 2 percent run on diesel.

Pierce Transit received a $2.55 million federal “Low or No Emissions” grant that allowed us to purchase our first three electric buses and related infrastructure in 2018.

In 2021 six new battery electric buses were purchased primarily with Washingoton State Department of Ecology Air Pollution Control Account funds that originated with the federal Volkswagen settlement.

The goals of including electric buses in our fleet are to diversify our fleet in the event of a service disruption related to another bus type, and to retain our agency’s commitment to sustainability. Our goal is to continue increasing our electric bus fleet, replacing diesel buses as we go.

The benefits of all-electric buses include:

  • Zero emissions
  • Replacing diesel buses
  • Meets “Buy America” standards
  • Use thirty percent fewer parts
  • Save on maintenance costs

We hope you will hop on board!
