Using the SWOT analysis method combined with the conventional research methods, the author has assessed the reality of some factors affecting teaching – learning activities and proposed six short and long – term solutions such as: (i) Enhancing extracurricular physical training activities; (ii) Enhancing professional activities and academic exchanges; (iii) Purchasing additional learning resources; (iv) Propagating and educating in order to raise students’ awareness of chess subject; (v)
Improving the teaching method of Chess subject; (vi) Training and fostering professional qualifications of lecturers in order to improve the effectiveness of chess teaching for college students of physical education at Tien Giang University. The research results of this topic can help researchers have a new direction in using the SWOT model to assess the curent situation and proposing solutions to improve the quality of teaching – learning physical education in general as well as chess subject in particular.
