Method 1: How does change affect your Business Model?

Players: 2 to 8 | Duration: 15 – 60 minutes | Level: 2 (out of 5)

Step
1. Use the Business Model Canvas (A. Osterwalder and Y. Pigneur 2010) to create a sketch of your business model.
2. Agree on a time-span that you want to consider in the future (e.g. 2 years).
3. Shuffle all the cards (please note that you can also create a random selection of 50 cards).
4. In turns, pick a card from the deck.
5. Use the Pattern of change card. Select the pattern of change that is applicable to the selected card.
6. Discuss how this is relevant to your business model using the nine building blocks accordingly.
7. If relevant, discuss further to gain more insight.
– Is this pattern of change a threat or an opportunity?
– How do you adjust your business model to this change?
– Are there other relevant circumstances that might occur (and imply the same consequences)?

8. If not relevant, discuss other patterns of change to gain more insight.
– Is another pattern relevant to your business?
– Which signals can you identify with each pattern of change?
– What will happen if the current pattern of change suddenly changes?

9. Keep playing and repeat step 3 till 8 until you run out of cards or time is up.

7. The player who’s building block is affected,  indicates which changes are needed to solve the problem.
– Can it be done by yourself or do you need help from the other players/building blocks?
8. Repeat steps 5 to 7 until the business model is resistant to various developments, you reach your time limit or after playing all the cards.
