Business Administration Program – Ivy Tech Community College of Indiana

What is the Global Workforce Skills Certificate?

The Global Workforce Skills Certificate reflects academic excellence and workforce preparation for students to successfully participate in the dynamic and increasingly diverse sectors and cultures in Indiana and elsewhere. This financial-aid-eligible completion certificate is part of Ivy Tech’s School of Business, Logistics and Supply Chain.

All students take Global Indiana, Culture and Communications, and the Global Workforce Skill Capstone.  The remaining 12 credit hours can include coursework in foreign language, business, social sciences, human services, history, geography, and even travel classes and internships.

What do former students say about the GLOB 101 class?

“The course is worthy and interesting; it opens my eyes to see the business connections with different cultures, religions, and politics. Although Indiana is far away from all the oceans, Indiana’s ports are internationally important as they transport uncountable cargo to and from the globe. With advanced technology, we live more connected with the world these days. Therefore, we do not only live in Indiana, a state in America, but also a global village in the world. I recommend this course to all students even if you are not majoring in business, international relationships, and policy.”

“Amazing course, presented very well. The class diversity was astonishing! Not only did it help in Global workforce skills, it provided much needed cultural competence education as well. Excited about earning my certificate!”

“I would highly recommend students take [Professors Rechtin and Pitstick’s] class! They have amazing energy and they just flow so easily back and forth. It’s like  having two friends that you haven’t seen in a long time and you want to catch up with and tell them what you know!”

What do employers say about this program?

As Ivy Tech worked to develop the curriculum for this program, we talked with Indiana employers.  A representative from Old National Bank noted, “Cultural awareness, sensitivity, and employment law is huge benefit….I’m not saying everyone needs to be a subject matter expert in employment law, but they do need to understand the cultural and legal differences.” The representative from Cummins thought that the Global Workforce Skills Certificate would be beneficial for candidates applying to the company, noting “It’d be a rare commodity to have that knowledge and understanding of what are the obstacles or challenges of global business.”
