Many of us guys are on a mission to find that perfect electric shaver or bald head shaver that can do a great job at removing unwanted hair on our heads in a jiffy, or while traveling, and an alternative to using cartridge or safety razors.

On my shaving journey, I have found it near impossible to find anything that beats a Gillette Mach 3 or other cartridge razors and safety razors for head shaving.

However, what I have found is what I would say are the best electric head shavers that come close to the level of closeness as razors and more importantly, give us guys that convenience when needed that electric shavers offer.

Let’s take a close look at the electric shavers we have placed in this roundup that we have tested with repeated use which should belong in the best electric head shaver category.

After the roundup of shavers I will cover various frequently asked questions that crop up in e-mails from our readers.

1. Skull Shaver Pitbull Gold PRO – Best Shaver Designed Primarily for Head Shaving

The Skull Shaver Pitbull Gold PRO is one of a series of electric shavers specifically designed for head shaving.

Within the series you’ll find four head shavers made by the company ‘Skull Shaver’ and the Pitbull Gold is the second most expensive.

Brief Description & Features –

One of the big selling points of the Skull Shavers is the ergonomics which is also the company’s patented design.

Users are able to hold this shaver in two ways. One way is to hold the shaver at the sides of its body and the other it by placing or cupping your hands between the blade head and the body of the shaver.

The second method of holding the shaver helps make shaving the back of the head very easy, almost relaxing in a way.

The four rotary blades are flexible and aim to work well and move along with the various contours of a users head. These blades must be changed every 3 – 6 months which can be quite costly.

While the Skull Shaver Pitbull Gold PRO is primarily for head shaving, it can be used for facial shaving as well.

Skull Shavers are charged up via a USB lead which makes charging it anywhere at any time easy, and users know how much charge the battery has left with the percentage indicator showing on the top of the shaver.

Performance & Shaving –

This electric head razor does perform well and better than many others. The design and ergonomics do make head shaving much easier than using various other foil and rotary shavers.

I have mentioned you can shave your face with the Skull Shaver. However, it won’t shave quite as close as other high quality electric shavers designed primarily for facial use, but it will do the job.

Wet shaving can be a bit messy, but it does give a better shave this way and prevents skin irritation. A great bald head shaver when wet shaving!

Final Thoughts

The Skull Shaver Pitbull Gold PRO gets the number one spot in the best electric head shaver roundup, even above other shavers from the Skull Shaver range. This is because of its functionality and how it is almost the perfect head shaver, and it’s a fair price.

This Skull Shaver offers more than the Skull Shaver Palm and Pitbull Silver Pro in terms of battery runtime and the battery charge indication. The Pitbull Platinum is too pricey and offers very little extra benefit that warrants paying so much more.

The only real complaint that other users have mentioned is the longevity of battery life after continuous use.

Currently priced at around $99 USD and quite a lot more in the UK, EU, and beyond because they’re a US product.

2. Skull Shaver Palm – Best Affordable Option Designed Primarily for Head Shaving

Another Skull Shaver (Skull Shaver Palm) is in this line-up and this is based on being a decent electric head shaver at a very good price (half the price of the Pitbull Gold PRO).

Brief Description & Features –

As with all Skull Shavers, it has the ergonomics which is also the company’s patented design, and one of its best selling points.

The body of the Skull Shaver Palm can be held and used in two modes. The first mode of use is holding the sides of the shaver body and the second is with a user cupping their hand between the blade head and body.

There is no percentage indication on this model to let a user know how much battery power is left. However, a green light turns red to warn a user to get it charged back up which is enough indication for users.

The runtime of the battery is around 60 minutes and it takes about an hour to fully charge. While this is not as much as other models of the Skull Shaver it is sufficient enough.

Three rotary blades that flex while in use along a user’s head help the shaver move along the various contours of a user’s head easily.

Buyers get a handy nose and ear hair trimmer that can be attached after removing the blade head.

Performance & Shaving –

I tested out the Skull Shaver Palm using it wet and dry, and with shaving cream. There is not much difference in the end result, although shaving wet with cream or soaps is more comfortable and prevents irritation.

This Skull Shaver only has three rotary blades unlike the others from this company that have four or five. However, I found it performed just as well on my head, and in a way it was better while facial shaving because the blades and its head move around difficult to reach areas easier (i.e., under the nose and around the ears).

Like other Skull Shavers the Palm model works well when used daily to keep on top of keeping that bald head well shaven and all it takes is a couple of minutes to whizz over it.

While it does not have the closeness of using a razor it does a very good job and gets it done quickly when used as a maintenance shaving tool.

This electric head shaver can also be used for facial shaving.

Final Thoughts

The Skull Shaver Palm is a good option for those wishing to try out one of the electric head shavers from the Skull Shaver brand without investing as much cash as the other models.

The biggest negatives with this electric head shaver is the cost and frequency of blade changing and the concern about the longevity of the battery after continued use.

This shaver also makes a good travel companion and the convenience of using a USB charging lead makes that easier.

Currently priced up at around $39.99 USD which is a steal, but in the UK and EU it costs (£49.99 – €57.00).

3. Remington RX5 (aka Balder Pro) – Best Non-SkullShaver Designated Electric Head Shaver Option

The Remington RX5 is another shaver designed specifically for shaving a user’s head. Unlike the Skull Shavers, it is not to be used for facial shaving.

Brief Description & Features –

The Rx5 is on par with the Skull Shaver Palm, however, the ergonomics of this shaver are not quite as good. This is not to say it does not fit in the hand comfortably as it most certainly does and the smaller size may suit some users more.

Remington has designed and shaped the body to make it fit well within a user’s hand and the sides of the body have nice rubber grips that support holding it.

The easy-to-remove blade head has five rotary blades that flex in and out and I like the movement of the blade head more so than the Skull Shaver. The RX5 (Balder Pro) moves well with the contours of my head.

This is also an electric head shaver that may be used wet or dry and with a user’s favorite type of shaving soap or cream.

Users should get 50 minutes runtime for the rechargeable battery as advertised by Remington which seems about right in my experience. A warning light warns users when the battery is becoming low on charge.

I like the warranty period of the Remington which gives buyers a 2 – 3 (register for an extra year online) year period of guarantee if it faults. If registered online users also get 100 days money back guarantee which is comforting for a buyer.

Like other electric head razors, the Remington RX5 has a pop up detail trimmer that some guys might appreciate.

Performance & Shaving –

The Remington RX5 performed and shaved my head well enough when using it wet and dry. And like others I have tested and reviewed, it’s more comfortable when wet shaving with some lather, but it can get messy.

shaving with the Remington RX5 head shaver

While the Skull Shavers as mentioned above have the upper hand in the ergonomics department I have still found the RX5 very easy to use and move around any part of my head.

Remington state this is not a facial shaver, so that’s a disadvantage over the Skull Shaver. It will shave the face, however, it’s possible this will affect the longevity of the blades.

Like any of the electric head shavers, this performs best with only a couple of days of growth or daily use. Anything over a couple of days of growth can be shaved, but it just takes a lot more effort and strokes that can cause irritation.

I did find at times some parts of the head were not covered properly by all blades (like the blade head was coming away from my head or overlapping). Maybe the blade head is too large or five blades are too many, I am not sure!

Final Thoughts

While I feel the Skull Shaver brand has a definite edge over the RX5 electric head shaver it’s still a decent option and gives a close enough head shave conveniently.

Remington is a reliable brand in terms of honoring the warranty period and they provide a 100 day money back. Electric shavers quite often become faulty so it’s nice to know they can be repaired or replaced (based on their terms & conditions).

The Remington Balder Pro is currently priced at $69.99 USD, and in the UK and EU it costs around (£69.99 – € 66.99).

4. Andis ProFoil Lithium Shaver – Best Powerful HeadMower

The Andis ProFoil Lithium did seem like an unusual choice of shaver to add to the best electric head shavers roundup until I found others agreeing that it deserves a spot based on its powerful mowing skills.

It’s a powerful tool for sure!

Brief Description & Features –

The Andis is a twin foil electric shaver that looks very basic and retro. And, its primary purpose as stated by the makers is for shaving stubble and finishing fades (i.e., finishing off around the fading on gent’s haircuts).

It’s actually known and used worldwide by barbers for various barbering skills.

The Andis has a very powerful motor which is quite noticeable with the noise it produces.

Users may use this electric shaver corded or cordless and the suggested runtime is 80 minutes which is very good for a high-powered motor.

The twin titanium foils on this shaver stagger which is unusual for foil shavers. The staggering is a feature that is useful for barbers to use their barbering skills, and it’s possible this helps while shaving over the curves of the head and the back area.

The cutters are easily viewed through the foils when taking a closer look – they get super close to the foils for shaving closeness

When talking about ergonomics this shaver does not have them, at all. It is also non-waterproof.

Everything is quite basic and kind of featureless on the Andis ProFoil.

However, it’s how it finishes that is the most important factor.

Performance & Shaving –

Unfortunately on facial hair, it caused me irritation on the neck. Other users don’t have this trouble.

After trimming my hair down to the bare clipper blade length without an attachment and then shaving with the Andis I got great results. It gave the closest head shave out of all these in this category.

  • Affordable blades and foils

  • Ergonomics are not great for head shaving
  • Non-waterproof, use only for dry shaving
  • Quite noisy

Final Thoughts

The Andis ProFoil was a great shaver to test out, especially for shaving my balding bonce. This tool is a mean machine and gets a closer shaver than any other.

It most definitely doesn’t shine in all areas, such as being non-waterproof, lacking ergonomics, and other factors that make a shaver great, however, a lot of users are more than happy with its simple design that’s powerful.

If you trim or cut hair at home for others at all then it’s a must-have for finishing off fades and will add more use for the shaver. This is where is really excels.

The Andid Profoil is currently priced at $56.99 +USD, and in the UK and EU it costs around (£62.99 + – € 95.99+).

5. Braun Series 5 – Best Affordable Good All-Rounder Shaver

The Braun Series 5 is primarily a facial shaver. However, if any shaver can cut through facial hair it can most definitely cut through the hair on a person’s head unless their hair is like wire (hair on our heads is much finer).

There are better shavers on the market made by Braun, Panasonic, and others, but this one makes it into this category for its affordability as the others cost quite a lot more.

Brief Description & Features –

The Series 5 is known as the easy clean 2020 new generation series that is easy to clean with water with the blade head attached. Obviously, it’s waterproof!

Its ergonomics for facial use are very good and it is comfortable to hold. While handling it when head-shaving it’s not as easy as shavers specifically designed for head shaving, nevertheless it’s not hard to use.

The detachable head on this shaver has three cutters, two are foils and the center cutter picks up longer hairs to be cut by the foils. These cutters will move in and out with the contours of the face and head while shaving.

The Li-Ion battery should give a user 50 minutes of runtime and takes about an hour to fully charge.

From the series 5 range, I would recommend the Braun Series 5 5050cs (50-W4650cs UK/EU) model because of the useful attachments that enable a user to trim down their hair as short as possible on their face or head before using the foils.

Performance & Shaving –

While the Skull Shavers and Remington mentioned are the best electric head shavers because of the ergonomics and rotary blades, and the Andis is as fierce and as close as a head shave can get, the Series 5 is a good all rounder.

Like when using most electric shavers the Braun 5 was not great to use after 3 or more days of growth which I tested it on. After one or two growth days it did a good enough job.

This outperformed the other head shavers when using it on my neck and did not cause any irritation.

Having attachments that can be used on the same shaver to use for trimming when there is too much growth to prepare for using the foils is very useful.

Final Thoughts

The Braun Series 5 is a good affordable facial shaver option that will also shave a user’s head when needed.

If a buyer does not need a head shaver specifically made for head shaving and wants a shaver to buy that is affordable and does its job well enough as a facial shaver while giving a user a head-shaving option then the Series 5 could be a good buy.

The Braun Series 5 (with attachments) is currently priced at $89.99 USD and in the UK/EU it costs (£89.99 –  €133.50). The models without attachments are cheaper.

That just about covers it for now in the best head electric shavers category. As soon as any other better shavers come on the market and get reviewed by us they’ll be live here.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a razor better than an electric shaver for shaving the head?

A cartridge or safety razor is definitely better when it comes to getting a close shave, however, there is no option to dry shave with a razor. Electric shavers are primarily better when it comes to convenience.

Can I use any electric shaver on my head?

Most electric shavers may be used on a person’s head as long as they do not have too much growth. The ergonomics on some may not be as good as others, especially those shavers designed specifically for head shaving but you can use them. Facial hair is tougher than the hair on our head so the cutters or blades can handle it.

Should I trim my hair before using an electric shaver on my head?

Most definitely, yes. It’s best to always get as close as a hair clippers length without any attachments if possible. The electric shaver will get the job done eventually with long growth but it will take time and you’ll be continually going over patches leftover to get rid of them.

I’ve seen lots of cheaper head shavers like the Skull Shavers on Amazon, are these any good?

Good question from one of our readers. I’ve tested out a few of them and a couple have been good, and quite close in performance to the Skull Shavers (See Skull Shaver Reviews, Comparison & Differences – Which Shaver Is Best?) and the Remington mentioned above, however, I found the choices above better. There is no reason a buyer shouldn’t give one of them a go, although I am well aware of the false and problematic reviews that need to be sifted through on Amazon before deciding which is the one to buy.
