Let’s be honest; when it comes to tequila, most people don’t drink it for the taste. When it comes to cheap tequila, you can never expect much.

If you’re like me, you’ve probably had some quality tequila before and fallen in love. Made by distilling the fermentation of blue agave plants, tequila is fruity, sweet, tangy, earthy, and smooth. When you find the right stuff, it’s an experience on its own. 

Unfortunately, regularly buying fancy tequila is costly and not necessarily within your budget. On the other hand, we don’t want to settle for cheap and tasteless when trying not to break the bank. For these reasons, I set out to find the 9 best cheap tequilas under $25.

El Jimador Silver Tequila

El Jimador Silver is a light fruity tequila.

The first time I tried El Jimador, I protested, but I had to concede; it’s delicious!

The taste is like a high-class tequila, while the price is bottom shelf. What more could you want?

I recommend this tequila for shots, margaritas, and tequila sunrises.

I particularly like the bold citrus flavor and crisp freshness of this tequila. El Jimador Silver Tequila is made with blue Weber agave and is not aged, hence the name silver.

Olmeca Altos Plata Tequila

Another un-aged white tequila that I enjoy is Olmeca Altos Plata.

White tequila is bottled immediately after distillation, and Olmeca Altos Plata is light, with a surprisingly sweet herbaceous, citrus, and agave scent. 

I usually take it neat, and the first thing I notice when it hits my tongue is the lime and lemon flavors, followed by sweet agave. It has a wonderfully smooth finish that’s warm and long-lasting.

Olmeca Alto Plata is a quality tequila, and I would gladly take it over some of its pricier counterparts. Not only is it affordable, but it tastes better than some expensive tequila I’ve had.

Agavales Blanco Tequila

Another great tequila is Agavales Blanco. This is a great drink for anyone looking for a spicier tequila.

Agavales Blanco holds a rustic, cooked agave flavor with grassy, smoky, black peppery, and appley undertones. There are also hints of jalapeno and nuts.

I wouldn’t put this drink at the top of my list simply because I’m not a huge fan of bitter tequila, but if that’s your jam, you’re sure to enjoy this supremely affordable delight.

I recommend mixing or shooting this tequila as it’s somewhat bland and doesn’t hold much staying power as a sipping drink.

Camarena Tequila

Camarena Tequila is one of my favorites. It tastes expensive and refined and goes down more smoothly than water.

It’s delicious in cocktails or straight and has a unique flavor you’re sure to enjoy.

I was surprised when I first tried this tequila. The hints of vanilla caught me off guard, but I was pleasantly satiated by the way the flavors mixed and diverged.

The overall taste is of fresh herbs and citrus, and it has a warm, savory finish of brown spices and black pepper.

Honestly, the sheer vibrancy of flavors should warrant a higher price tag on its own but it remains temptingly cheap. I highly recommend this tequila if you’re looking for something complex and smooth.

Lunazul Anejo Tequila

So far, the tequila I’ve covered has been white or silver – un-aged – but not everyone enjoys their tequila unripened. For our first aged tequila, let’s look at Lunazul Anejo Tequila.

This anejo tequila is bold and warm, with a major flavor focus on white oak and smoke. There is a bit of fruitiness, too, with some hints of plum and almonds.

The finish is warm and spicy with a bit of black pepper and just the scent of vanilla.

The oak and smoky tastes stand out the most in this drink, making it dark and sensual compared to its fresh and light counterparts.

Exotico Blanco 100% Agave Tequila

This tequila is great for sipping and mixing. Exotico’s Blanco is crisp and herbal with spicy undertones.

I was surprised to find how herbaceous the scent of this tequila is and just how robust of an agave taste it holds. The flavor is simple and uncomplicated but retains the hot pepper finish that the brand is known for. 

I would rank this one somewhere in the middle of the list. I quite enjoy it; it’s smooth and spicy but a bit simple for my tastes.

Pueblo Viejo Tequila

Pueblo Viejo Tequila is the perfect choice if you are looking for something sweet and rich.

Pueblo Viejo Tequila blends lots of fruity, sugary, herbal flavors to create a balanced yet bold drink for those with a sweeter taste in tequila.

Personally, I find this tequila’s unique flavor to be worth a try, even if you’re unsure about sweeter drinks.

The notes of citrus and green apple make the drink light, while the agave and herbs keep the drink grounded. There are also notes of caramel that blend perfectly with the cooked agave for a lingering taste.

Teremana Tequila

Teremana Tequila is a simple, low-calorie tequila with a bold citrus taste and smooth, fresh finish.

The biggest thing of note when it comes to this drink is just how high quality it is.

You can tell from the taste that the process and agave used in this tequila are top-notch.

This is the perfect tequila for any situation, and your friends will be super surprised to learn that it’s not a top-shelf tequila.

This tequila uses blue Weber highlands agave exclusively, and you can taste it. As I said before, I generally prefer more intricate tequila, but this is my go-to if I want something simple.

Jose Cuervo Tequila

Cuervo is a fabulous tequila brand, and they have a lot of types of tequila. Their silver Especial is a must in any minibar.

It’s the epitome of smoothness and perfectly enhances the natural agave flavors.

It has notes of caramel and fresh herbs and is the best drink for new and veteran tequila drinkers alike.

I love that this tequila goes with anything. Seriously, I’ve tried it in so many mixed drinks, and it’s always so smooth and perfectly blended.

I think my favorite pairing is in a watermelon margarita; it just tastes like summer!
