The limestone blocks in the bay with all different unique shapes are given vivid names by the people based on their shapes: Trong Mai island (Kissing chicken island), Xep island (the island looks like a pyramid), Thien Nga island (Swan island), Soi Sim island (myrtle island), Sea Lion Island, Oan Island… The bay water is crystal clear, calm, and peaceful. As the capital of the Dai Viet state at the end of the Tran and the beginning of the Ho period, Tay Do was built based on the basic principles of topography, feng shui, and post-occipital history, surrounded by rivers and mountains. The citadel is located at the border of the plains and mountains, with beautiful landscapes, harmonious mountains and rivers, and diverse terrain creating military advantages. To the North is Tho Tuong Mountain, to the West is Nguu Ngoa Mountain, to the East is Hac Khuyen Mountain, and to the South is the convergence of Ma River flowing from the West and Buoi River flowing to it. The entire wall and four main gates are built with blue limestone slabs, finely chiseled, square, and stacked tightly without adhesive. The average stone slabs are 1.5m long, some are up to 6m long, and weigh 24 tons. The total volume of stone used to build is about 20,000m3 and nearly 100,000m3 of soil is elaborately dug and filled.

According to historical data, in 1397, in the face of the threat of invasion by the Ming invaders from the North, Ho Quy Ly chose the land of An Ton (now Vinh Loc, Thanh Hoa) to build the citadel to prepare for a resistance and long war.

My Son Relic

My Son Relic

  • Year listed: 1999
  • UNESCO data: Cultural

Quang Nam people are not only proud of Hoi An ancient town, which is one of the brightest point of Vietnam’s tourism, but also has another world cultural heritage. The My Son Cham temple complex is located in a closed valley where the mountainous terrain is huge and majestic. Located nearly 70 km southwest of Da Nang city, about 40 km from Hoi An city, this area extends from the East Truong Son through My Son to Tra Kieu, the old capital of the Cham people.

This work is evaluated with many prominent monuments in Southeast Asia such as Borobudur (Indonesia), Pagan (Myanma), Angkor Wat (Cambodia) and Ayutthaya (Thailand).

The architecture of the temple complex is still a mystery to scientists.

The temple structure in My Son contains countless mysteries that modern scientists are still learning and researching. The temple complex is divided into several clusters, built on the same principle. Each cluster consists of a main temple, surrounded by small towers or auxiliary works. The main temple represents Mount Meru – the center of the universe, the convergence of the gods and the worship of Siva. The sub-temples worship the gods who watch over the sky.

Cham temples and towers were built of bricks, combined with decorative pieces of sandstone. A remarkable thing with these works is that the holy site is located in a closed valley, so it is inevitable that rain and sun gradually destroy the appearance of the works. However, if you look closely, visitors can realize that the outside of the brick wall is almost not covered with moss except for chipped or broken. These buildings, despite being exposed to rain and sun, are rarely affected by moss.

Although it has been through a long time with the destruction of war, what remains at My Son temple complex exudes mysterious beauty, attracting tourists from all over the world. Although some the temple buildings here are not intact, the mystery of My Son Cham tower is still preserved, expressed by the sophistication of the art of carving on bricks.
