Much of the technological breakthroughs in household appliances followed the invention of the incandescent electric light bulb by Thomas Edison in 1879. A couple of years later, Singer sewing machines became must-haves for the modern home.

This was followed by the lightweight electric flatiron, as well as “Thor,” the first electric-powered washing machine in 1907. The first moveable vacuum cleaner was invented in 1905 but it didn’t perform well because it weighed 45 kilos.

Three years later, the first electric coffee percolators appeared. In 1910, the electric stove, in-home electric refrigerator, and radios with tuners entered the market.

The residential refrigerator and dishwasher next appeared in 1913, followed by the automatic pop-up toaster in 1919 and the residential air conditioner in 1928. Without the invention of the air cooling system, many of today’s medications may not have existed since they require a cool environment for storage.

Home Appliances

1. Refrigerator

It’s easy to run out of fridge space these days. Many households have two fridges (plus a chest freezer). We have a full-sized kitchen, a mid-sized (like college-dorm fridge) in the basement, plus a small chest freezer and beverage fridge.

Obviously, a refrigerator is a necessary appliance. If you don’t own a refrigerator, then you have to shop daily.

The big issue is choosing a fridge because it’s a costly purchase. The variety of options, styles and layouts is considerable. In other words, there are many types of refrigerators you can buy.

Your first consideration is how wide and tall your fridge should be which is likely dictated by the space you have for your fridge. Most kitchens wedge fridges between cabinetry so you’re stuck with whatever space you have.

Fortunately, there are fridges of all widths so something will fit. You want it to fit to minimize gaps but not so tight you need to pound it in with a sledgehammer (or chisel away cabinetry).

In fact, I also have a full-size fridge in my office.

Our home fridge is a single-door style. My office is a double-door style.

Which do I prefer?

Surprisingly, I much prefer a single-door style fridge. I find with double-door fridges I’m constantly opening one door and then the other. It’s not as convenient. That’s my two cents’ worth. While the double “french door”-style fridge seems like a better option now that I have one I prefer the single-door.

2. Freezer

Freezers typically go hand-in-hand with refrigerators. A lot of refrigerators will come with a freezer included as part of the unit. Not all refrigerators will have a freezer attached to them, though. Sometimes, people will need to go out and buy a stand-alone freezer that they can make use of in their home.

Even if you do have a small freezer that is part of your refrigerator, it may be beneficial to consider buying a stand-alone freezer. Having a large chest-style freezer can actually be very convenient.

It will allow you to store larger amounts of food at once. This can help you to make fewer trips to the grocery store, and you will be able to keep more food in stock. Large families will be especially keen on owning a freezer.

It is going to make it so that you can feed the whole family a lot more easily. You’ll be able to store more of your staple foods such as various meats, frozen vegetables, and other essentials. As long as you have room for a large freezer, it should work out very well for you.

3. Oven

We just replaced our oven.

It was a bit of a drag because when the former oven broke down, it was hard to determine whether it could be fixed. Ultimately it couldn’t (after a hefty repair effort bill) so we bought a new one. Good ovens aren’t cheap but it’s an appliance we’ll have for quite some time so it was worth investing in a good one.

As you know, an oven is definitely a home appliance that you won’t want to be without. Living with a hot-plate or toaster oven can work, but it’s not ideal. As an aside — our oven broke down over Thanksgiving so we cooked the turkey on the grill, which worked amazingly well.

It is possible to get by without an oven, but it isn’t very convenient. You need an oven to be able to bake most of your favorite foods. A high-quality oven can really help to make your overall home life that much better.

If you are the type of person who enjoys cooking, then you will definitely want to purchase an oven that will meet your standards. People who are really into the culinary arts will want a large oven that helps them cook multiple dishes.

There are plenty of amazing ovens out there for you to consider, so you will be able to purchase one that will be great for cooking large meals. Finding an oven that works well in a smaller kitchen shouldn’t be too tough, either.

Finally, if you do host big dinners, consider two wall ovens. We also have a microwave/convection oven which saved our bacon at Thanksgiving. When both the convection and the main oven work, we can crank out a lot of food for great dinners.

4. Microwave

Microwaves have been a staple in kitchens for many decades. Many people would not be able to function normally without a microwave. It has become a part of our daily routines and makes things, such as warming up food, a lot simpler than it would otherwise be.

A microwave is a multi-faceted appliance that is useful in several ways. You will be able to find many types of microwaves on the market that are worth your consideration. There are actually more variations among microwaves than you may realize.

If you are looking for a large microwave unit that will help you to heat up large amounts of food at once, then you will be able to find it. There are also  compact microwaves that are perfect for those who are living in smaller environments, such as apartments.

5. Toaster Oven

Toaster ovens are a popular enough small appliance. We have a built-in convection oven so don’t have one of these but I did live with one a few years ago (before kids) and found they are very convenient when cooking for one person… a lot more convenient than a full-size oven. Heck, just the fact it’s on the counter is convenient.

Fortunately, toaster ovens are pretty cheap. You can find decent ones for around $40 but of course, you can spend higher for more bells and whistles.

I’ll say this: I prefer preparing food in a toaster oven over a microwave. I know microwaves are popular but I would rather have food cooked with conventional heat.

6. Toaster

The toaster isn’t necessarily an essential home appliance to own, but it can be really convenient. If you are the type of person who loves to have breakfast in the morning, then you will certainly want to own a toaster.

 Some people also like to make food, such as English muffins or pastries, in the morning. The toaster will keep everything on track to complete your breakfast.

Toasters are actually very affordable, you don’t have to pay too much money to get a really nice toaster. If you are low on counter space, then you can purchase a smaller toaster. A two-slice toaster will work fine for many people but there are larger toasters on the market that can make things even more convenient.

This toaster is a fairly standard four-slice model. It will allow you to toast four slices of bread at once, and it does a great job. The look of the toaster is also very sleek. It will fit in very nicely in any modern kitchen setting.

7. Built-in Dishwasher

8. Portable Dishwasher

Our first dishwasher was a portable dishwasher.

While not as convenient as a built-in, it immeasurably improved our life. When our first kid was born, we did not have any dishwashers. We realized very quickly we needed one, so we bought a portable.

Portable dishwasher design has come a long way. I particularly like the countertop versions which are smaller and don’t have to be wheeled into place. These are ideal for cottages, RVs, tiny homes, offices — any space where dish usage is minimal or space is small.

The particular unit above is very popular. You don’t have to hook it up to a faucet, which is fantastic as it comes with a built-in water reservoir. This frees up your kitchen faucet. However, it does come with a faucet hookup, if you prefer that.

In fact, even if you have a built-in dishwasher this is handy for family’s with infants. Often with babies, you need to wash bottles, soothers, etc. but you don’t have enough for a full built-in load so you could instead just load up your countertop compact dishwasher with baby’s stuff and get it ready for the next round.

9. Washing Machine

These may have been considered a luxury many decades ago, but now owning a washing machine is pretty much a necessity.

People who live in houses will generally want to own a nice washing machine that can handle a heavy workload. You will find that there are many styles and types of washing machines on the market to pick from, so you’ll be able to find a good option to fit your living space.

People who are seeking out a new washing machine will want to purchase a model that is durable and capable of washing clothes really well. It is also important to buy a unit that uses water efficiently.

11. Coffee Maker

There are so many different types of coffee makers. In fact, they can be split up into several categories which include single-serve, drip, percolator, and espresso machines, plus many more types of coffee makers.

I’m currently partial to single-serve coffee makers like the one featured above. We have one at home and in my office. This way coffee is fresh and we make only the amount we will actually drink. You also get your cup faster in the morning instead of waiting for a full pot.

However, purists scoff at single-serve which I can understand if you’re really into coffee. IN that case, increase your budget and get a high-quality drip brewer or a full-fledged espresso system. I’m not such a coffee aficionado, so single-serve does the job for me.

12. Vacuum

If you own a home that has carpeted floors, then you had better own a vacuum cleaner. It is not practical to clean your floors without a vacuum cleaner, if you have carpeting. Thankfully, vacuum cleaners aren’t necessarily expensive. You will be able to find plenty of vacuum cleaners on the market that are reasonably priced.

It is also possible to find vacuum cleaners that are a bit on the fancier side. Some vacuum cleaners can be fairly pricey, but they may also provide you with many interesting features.

Certain vacuum cleaners will be very powerful and may be capable of providing a deeper clean than some of the more affordable models. It is up to you to decide which type of vacuum cleaner you should pursue.

Regardless, you are definitely going to need to own a vacuum cleaner. You should do your best to pick out a vacuum cleaner that is easy enough for you to use and that will do a good job. Once you have found the right vacuum cleaner to suit your needs, it will make keeping your floors clean a lot simpler.

13. Blender

A blender is another home appliance that isn’t a necessity, but it is still incredibly common. Many people own blenders and wind up making use of them every single day. A good blender can really come in handy in the kitchen. It can be useful when you are making certain meals, and it can also allow you to make healthy treats, such as smoothies.

14. Food Processor

I love the food processor. It saves so much time and tedious chopping work.

If you prepare food at home, a food processor is a must-have small appliance.

I used to think it was a waste storing small household appliances until we borrowed a food processor from a friend for a dinner party. Wow! It was awesome. We diced and chopped so much fresh food, so quickly, that the next day we ordered one up and haven’t looked back.

While we don’t use it every day, we use it often and when we use it, we love it.

Which food processor should you get? There are many types of food processors to learn about. Consider your cooking styles and workflow — I tend to err on getting more appliances than I need.

15. Instant Pot

 

The Instant Pot has essentially carved out a class of small appliances of its own.

This is seven small appliances in one.

These are wildly popular. The space-saving alone is amazing. One appliance that takes the place of seven.

What does it replace: Rice cooker, pressure cooker, slow cooker, steamer, sauté pan, food warmer, and even, yogurt maker.

For the money, this invaluable kitchen appliance can’t be beat.

16. Rice Cooker

I believe other than our coffee maker, we use the rice cooker more than any other small appliance. Yes, we eat a lot of rice.

If it weren’t for the rice cooker, we probably wouldn’t eat so much rice because it’s a hassle making in a regular pot.

But with a rice cooker, it’s ridiculously easy to make and clean up. Moreover, the rice turns out perfect all the time.

If you like rice, even if you eat it just once in a while, a rice cooker is totally worth it.

17. Slow Cooker

I love slow cookers, probably because I love thick, hearty meals where everything is mixed together.

I also love how you just dump everything into the cooker in the morning and dinner is ready at night.

18. Stand Mixer

Anyone who bakes needs a stand mixer.

The one featured above is super popular. It’s not the cheapest. It’s a mid-priced option that has rave reviews.

While the stand variety (versus just a mixer) costs more, it will save your arm and hand. It will also allow to get onto other steps in your recipe while something mixes. Standing there holding a heavy hand-held mixer is really tough on arms and hands. I’m a big guy and fairly strong but I tire quickly. Not to mention it’s really boring.

If you bake, get a stand mixer. Period.

While there are many types of mixers, I’m all for the stand-style pictured above.

19. Juicer

I used to be into juicing big time. That was before kids when I had the time. I’d juice huge batches containing all kinds of fruits and vegetables.

It’s a time-consuming process, especially the clean-up. These days I buy fresh juice.

However, whenever my schedule allows, I’ll get another juicer since I love the stuff.

There are a good number of different types. Some are definitely better than others. A juicer is an appliance that you’ll want to go a bit higher end. It’s worth it.

20. Waffle Iron

Another tasty treat that people like to have in the morning is a waffle. Even if waffles are not necessarily something that you will eat every single morning, they are still something that many people look forward to having on occasion.

If you want to be able to make delicious waffles, then you will need to own a good waffle iron. Sometimes this home appliance is referred to as a waffle maker, as well.

21. Bread Machine

We don’t have one, but my brother does and he uses it weekly. He makes incredible bread of all types. He’s into it, so it was a good investment for him. I’m a beneficiary when he comes over with a loaf.

22. Ice Cream Maker

I can’t say I’ll be buying an ice cream maker but I see the appeal.

I’m sure my kids would get a kick out of it but probably only once or twice and then it would sit. I’m not one to be all that experimental with trying different ice cream flavors so having the machine would be lost on me.

Besides, I don’t have any problem with the store-bought options. I can barely decide when I’m in the aisle… but for those who love to play around with flavors and love ice cream, an ice cream maker can be a good investment. Like kids, I think it would be fun to try a few times but that doesn’t warrant buying one.

25. Popcorn Machine

There’s more than one way to make popcorn at home. If you have kids, a popcorn maker can be a very good investment — at least in our house where our kids, especially our youngest, love the stuff (not a bad snack to like).

With streaming services, we have a movie night about once a week which includes big bowls of popcorn. I even eat the stuff. I like freshly popped. I avoid any that comes in a bag.

26. Panini Maker

You have to love sandwiches to buy, let alone use, a panini maker.

I love a good sandwich but I’m content with toast or plain bread.

But I totally get the appeal of panini maker — grilled cheese, elaborate hot sandwiches — whatever you think will taste good cooked between a couple of slabs of bread.

Like many small appliances, it could be fun experimenting but you have to be committed to it and enjoy it. Me? Not so much. I’d probably get a bigger kick out of experimenting with making ice cream.

27. Deep Fryer

Before you dive in and buy a deep fryer, you should know there are also air fryers which claim to do the same thing, without oil. I’m not so sure air frying is as good as oil frying.

On the flip side, I get nervous cooking with oil. I know the appliances are pretty much fail-safe but I don’t like fried foods enough to buy one. There’s also having to dispose of the oil which is messy.

So, there are good reasons to opt for an air fryer over a deep fryer, but just be aware that there are two types.

28. Food Dehydrator

Keeping our food fresh is not an easy task especially for those perishable goods. Good thing there are food dehydrators. They remove moisture from food so it will have a longer shelf life. There are different types according to the kind of food to dehydrate.

29. Garbage Disposal

Having a garbage disposal unit can make your life a bit easier overall. If you don’t like having to meticulously scrape off food particles from your plates, then you will love owning a garbage disposal.

This allows you to simply grind up leftover food and food particles without needing to worry. It winds up saving you time, and you’ll be able to wash your dishes in a simpler way.

This is also really convenient to have when you are preparing meals. Being able to throw leftover stems and other things into the garbage disposal really helps. 33. Iron

Of all household chores, ironing is my favorite.

I set it up in front of the TV and methodically iron piles of clothes. I find it very relaxing and gratifying.

I’m a stickler about my clothes being nicely pressed and wrinkle-free. I love crisp creases in the right places. Hence, taking a wrinkled garment and turning it into a nicely pressed, ready-to-wear item is extremely gratifying.
