24 electric convertible cars that you’ll be able to buy soon
Update: ‘MINI Cooper SE Convertible’ added.
The convertible body style has always represented the concept of open-top, fun, motoring, and the transition from ICE powertrains does not mean this body style is dead. Rather, here are the electric convertible cars expected on the market in the next few years.
MINI Cooper SE Convertible

The MINI Cooper SE Convertible (MINI Electric Convertible) is claimed to be the world’s first electric convertible. There’s no word on its U.S. launch, but in Europe, just 999 units are available.
The Cooper SE Convertible features a powered textile soft top that customers can operate at speeds up to 30 km/h. Like on the gas-powered MINI Convertible, customers can keep the roof partly closed in a sunroof mode. The electric convertible offers 160 liters of cargo space behind the rear seats, 51 liters lesser than the (Euro-spec) electric hatchback.
The MINI Electric Convertible has the same, 135 kW (181 hp)/270 Nm (199 lb.-ft.) motor as its donor model. The same goes for the battery pack, which has an energy storage capacity of 32.6 kWh. The electric convertible delivers a WLTP range of 201 km (125 miles), 32 km (20 miles) lesser than the electric hatchback. A 0-62 mph sprint takes 8.2 seconds, which means it is 0.9 seconds slower.
Launch Date: April 2023
Price: In Germany, the MINI Cooper SE Convertible has been priced at EUR 60,000 (USD 63,907).
Caterham electric roadster
A Caterham electric roadster is part of the British sports car maker’s plans, suggests a report Autocar published on October 31, 2022. Caterham CEO Bob Laishley has told the magazine that the company plans to launch a two-seater electric sports car that’s prettier and more modern compared to the gasoline-powered Seven. “Maybe it will have a roof,” Laishley said, indicating the new model would be an electric roadster.
The potential Caterham electric roadster will be designed as an EV from the outset, which would be great for aerodynamics, energy efficiency, performance, and handling. All the power will be directed to the rear wheels, meaning the EV could have sports car manners. Laishley would like to keep it raw, but wants to get it registered under UK’s SVA rules, plus the instant torque delivery of BEVs usually necessitates some controlling measures. So, the possible Caterham electric roadster may have several active and passive safety features you wouldn’t see in a typical gasoline-powered model of the brand.
Bentley Continental GTC Electric
The Bentley Continental GTC EV will likely be inspired by the Bentley Batur, which debuts the brand’s all-new language that will define the Bentley EV range. Image Source: Bentley
The first Bentley EV will be launched in 2025, and it will likely be an SUV or a sedan. Two or three years later, Crewe’s niche model, the Continental GTC, should go all-electric. A version of Volkswagen Group’s Scalable Systems Platform (SSP) is likely to support the Bentley electric convertible.
In an interview with Automotive News Europe released on May 10, 2022, Bentley CEO Adrian Hallmark said that the company’s EVs will produce double the power of the Continental GT Speed (and also Continental GTC Speed), which develops 650 hp from a 6.0L W12 engine. This means we’re looking at up to 1,300 hp for the electric Continental GTC.
The electric model should finish a 0-60 mph sprint in three seconds or lower, which would make it much quicker than the Continental GTC Speed, that does it in 3.5 seconds. However, Bentley is more likely to focus on how the car sprints from 30 mph, with Hallmark stating that most people enjoy acceleration from 30 to 70 mph, or 30 to 150 mph if we talk about customers in Germany.
Launch Date: 2027
Price: $275,000

Spy shots posted on AutoEvolution.com show that the Warren Buffett-backed Chinese carmaker is testing a convertible variant of its BYD Han sedan, already on sale in China. The Han would be a key model, especially if the company green-lights the Han convertible and estate variants which are popular segments in Europe. BYD also showcased the Han EV sedan at a German roadshow in 2020, and with its BYD Blade LFP battery, the range goes up to 444 miles (715 km) as per CLTC testing in the 2022 model.
Launch Date: Expected to be approved for production this year
Price: Equivalent of $33,000 onwards
Wuling Hong Guang MINIEV Cabrio
Wuling Motors has begun production of the Hong Guang MINI EV Cabrio. Image Source: SAIC-GM-Wuling
Among the electric convertible cars from China is the Wuling Hong Guang MINI EV Cabrio. On September 25, 2022, SAIC-GM-Wuling launched the MINI EV Cabrio in a single configuration costing CNY 99,000 (USD 14,396).
The Hong Guang MINI EV Cabrio features an IP68-rated, dustproof, waterproof, and electrically operating soft top roof (available in red and black options), two-tone interior color scheme (available in red + black and white + black options), new two-spoke steering wheel, dual 10-inch screens, and deleted rear seats. Emerald Green, Modern Black, and Sea and Sky Blue are the exterior colors.
The tiny electric convertible employs a motor that produces 30 kW and 110 Nm of torque. It weighs just 925 kg (curb). It can accelerate from 0 to 50 km/h in eight seconds and it has a top speed of 100 km/h. It uses a 26.5 kWh LFP battery pack that delivers a range of 280 km. Charging from 20 to 100% SoC takes 8.5 hours.
In Europe, Dartz has announced its own version of the MINI EV Cabrio, previewing it with the Freze Froggy Beachstar Body concept. It says that the Freze Froggy would be suitable for car sharing and car rental companies as well as sea hotels. Freze Froggy pre-orders have begun, but launch dates and pricing have yet to be revealed. In case you didn’t know, Dartz already sells the Wuling Mini EV hatchback as the Freze Nikrob in Europe.
Launch Date: Launches in China and Europe this year.
Price: Priced at CNY 99,000 (USD 14,396) in China
Electric VW Convertible
The electric VW convertible could be based on the ID.3 or an upcoming EV. Image: Herbert Diess/Twitter
Since former Volkswagen Group CEO Dr. Herbert Diess teased an ID.3 electric convertible on Twitter in March 2021, it’s only a matter of time before we see a VW convertible riding on the MEB platform. As per Autocar, a concept previewing the design of the electric cabrio could be revealed soon, and the production version could mirror the ID.3 hatch’s powertrains: from a base 217 mile, 150 hp variant to a 338 mile, 204 hp version, the future addition could become the most successful among electric convertible cars.
Launch Date: Concept expected to be shown in the near future
Price: From $45,000 in the EU and UK markets where it will launch initially
MG Cyberster (MGC/MGE)
In this list of electric convertible cars, the Cyberster should be the model combining affordability, advanced technology, and high performance. Image: TopElectricSUV’s rendering
The production MG Cyberster is a pure-electric roadster will premiere in April 2023, as per an Autocar report dated November 2, 2022. Far less dramatic than the concept car unveiled at the 2021 Shanghai Auto Show, it is still quite radical in terms of technology. Trademark filings indicate that SAIC could launch the sports car as MGC in Europe.
The roadworthy Cyberster will feature radiation symbol-inspired headlamps, electronically-folding soft top, scissor doors, and full-width tail lights with Union Jack-inspired long arrows. The interior is a class apart, with a gaming cockpit that’s far advanced, at least in terms of looks, from its competitors. It will feature three screens clubbed like gaming monitors and a steering yoke that allows an unobstructed view of these screens and the road ahead. A fourth screen, a touch-operated unit, is likely to be added to the center console.
The Cyberster should ride on the Modular Scalable Platform that underpins the MG4 Electric. The dedicated EV platform is suitable for regular models with the usual system voltage of 400 volts as well as premium models with a higher system voltage of 800 volts. The production Cyberster could have a CATL-developed module-less battery pack with the cell-to-pack CTP (cell-to-pack) technology.
While its official unveiling isn’t until April 2023, there’s a possibility that MG could brand it as the ‘MGE’ for the European markets.
Launch Date: Unveil in April 2023
Price: Expected to be within $50,000
New Tesla Roadster
The quickest electric convertible car of the future has the Tesla Roadster starting at the top. Image: Tesla
Highly anticipated among electric convertible cars is the Tesla Roadster, with Elon Musk stating in June 2021 that the company had ideas to further increase torque and maximum rpm for the Roadster, indicating that new performance milestones will be achieved for a production car. The SpaceX package for the Roadster could see 60 mph come up in 1.1 seconds. However, it is anyone’s guess how much further the Roadster production will be delayed due to supply chain issues, which have already delayed the Tesla Cybertruck and slowed deliveries of the 2022 Tesla Model X.
Products like the Model X and Cybertruck (where Tesla can make significant profits) are essential for projects like the Roadster, which consumes a high level of resources for development and production.
Launch Date: At the Tesla Cyber Rodeo event on April 7, 2022, Musk sounded confident about the next-gen Roadster production beginning in 2023. Expect customer deliveries to commence in the fall of 2023.
Price: From $200,000
Abarth 500 Electric Cabrio
The Abarth 500 Electric is planned as a regular hatchback as well as a cabriolet. Image: Caradisiac
The Abarth 500 Electric Cabrio made its public debut at the 2023 Brussels Motor Show, which took place in mid-January 2023. According to a Caradisiac report published on January 13, 2023, the 500e Cabrio is available in the limited-run Scorpionissima edition at a launch price of EUR 46,000 (USD 48,996). Customers will be offered Acid Green and Poison Blue exterior colors and two-tone 18-inch alloy wheels. The French report also stated that the Scorpionissima edition of the 500e will be limited to 1,949 units.
The Abarth 500e comes exclusively with a 42 kWh battery pack. With its donor delivering 320 km (199 miles) of WLTP range, the performance model may return around 300 km (186 miles), as the impetus is on driving thrill. AC charging (0-100% SoC) takes 15 hours 15 minutes (3 kW)/3 hours 15 minutes (11 kW) and DC charging (0-80% SoC) takes 35 minutes.
The new Abarth 500e’s motor generates 113.7 kW (152 hp) and 235 Nm (173 lb.-ft.) of torque. The driver can select from three driving modes – Turismo, Scorpion Street, and Scorpion Track. The Turismo mode reduces the power and torque to 100 kW (134 hp) and 220 Nm (162 lb.-ft.), respectively, for improved efficiency. A 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) sprint in the tiny electric hot hatch takes just 7 seconds. The top speed has been electronically limited to 155 km/h (96 mph).
Launch Date: 2023
Price: From EUR 46,600
Maserati GranCabrio Folgore (GranCabrio Electric)
The convertible version of the Granturismo Folgore (rendered) will be released in 2023.
Announcing its 2021 results and electrification plan on March 17, 2022, the brand with the trident revealed plans to launch the GranCabrio EV as the Maserati GranCabrio Folgore in 2023.
The GranCabrio Folgore, like the GranTurismo Folgore, should sport three 300 kW (402 hp) permanent magnet motors — two for the rear wheels and one for the front wheel — that produce a combined power of 560 kW (751 hp) and a total torque of 1,350 Nm (996 lb.-ft.). A 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) sprint may take around 2.7 seconds, and the top speed could be 320 km/h (199 mph).
An 83 kWh (usable) battery pack operating at 800 volts, double the normal voltage, would power the motors. 22 kW (AC)/270 kW (DC) will likely be the maximum rate supported for charging. With the latter, up to 100 km (62 miles) can be gained in 5 minutes.
In an announcement on October 25, 2022, Maserati revealed that the next-gen GranCabrio is undergoing testing for final tuning ahead of the launch. The company also released a teaser that showed a camouflaged prototype of the EV convertible.
Launch Date/Availability: 2023
Price: From $140,000 (estimated)
GMC Hummer EV pickup
The Hummer EV lets you remove its roof panels however you please, making it an electric convertible truck. Image – GMC
What is the GMC Hummer EV doing in a list of electric convertible cars, you ask? Well, when the four rectangle-tinted ‘Lexan’ panels are removed from the roof, the Hummer EV is as open-top as a convertible can get! Better still, owners can choose to remove the individual panels in any combination, and once uninstalled, and they can be accommodated in the ‘frunk’ in vinyl bags or foam boxes.
And until the Tesla Roadster and MG Cyberster are out, if you want a fast electric convertible car, look no further than the Hummer EV as it claims 3 seconds for the 0-60 mph sprint using the Watts to Freedom feature.
Release Date: Deliveries are currently underway. The company has temporarily closed reservations.
Price: Currently at $110,295 though future versions will see the price dropping to $84,650.
Polestar 6
Sharing underpinnings with the Polestar 5 and a design derived from the Polestar O₂, the Polestar 6 will be a hard-top electric roadster. Image: Polestar
The Polestar 6 will be the production version of the Polestar O₂ concept unveiled in March 2022. It will be a hard-top electric roadster sitting on a bespoke bonded aluminum platform adapted from the 5. It will borrow the electric sedan’s 800-volt battery pack as well. The top-end configuration will sport two motors that generate a combined power of 650 kW (871 hp) and a combined torque of 900 Nm (664 lb.-ft.). Polestar expects a 0-62 mph sprint to take 3.2 seconds and the top speed to be 155 mph in this configuration.
Release Date & Price: Polestar 6 reservations opened exclusively for a USD 200,000-launch edition called LA Concept on August 16, 2022. Polestar had just 500 units of the first edition on offer, and they were all spoken for in a week. The company plans to start taking reservations for the standard 6 by December 2022. Deliveries begin in 2026.
Fisker Ocean
What’s unique about this SUV is the roof-mounted solar panel which can add up to 2,000 miles of range annually, harnessing nothing but an inexhaustible source of energy—the sun’s rays. Image: Fisker
The Fisker Ocean might feel like the odd man out in this list of convertibles. But it’s not because it has the soul of a convertible. At the press of a button, eight glass panels on the Ocean retract to give customers the feeling of a convertible. Fisker calls it the ‘California Mode,’ which rolls all windows down, including the rear quarter glass, rear windscreen, and the sunroof, that doubles up as a solar panel.
Fisker calls the rear quarter glass the rear windscreen the ‘Doggie Window,’ hinting that pets seated at the rear can enjoy the breeze thanks to the retractable nature of the windows. There are more innovative features inside the Ocean. On the top variants, the massive touchscreen inside can rotate into portrait or horizontal modes.
The Ocean will come with AWD or FWD powertrain options. The dual-motors on the top variants produce 550 hp and can rocket the SUV to 60 mph in just 3.6 seconds. The estimated EPA range is over 350 miles. The entry-level Sport variant comes with an FWD drivetrain with a single electric motor that produces 275 hp and can rush to 60 mph in 6.9 seconds. Its estimated EPA range is 250 miles for the basic version.
Release date: Production commenced on November 17, 2022, and deliveries in the U.S. will start in February 2023.
Price: $37,499 to $68,999
Audi electric convertible
The Audi electric convertible could borrow design cues from the Audi spysphere concept (pictured). However, don’t expect the show car’s extendable front section. Image Source: Audi
Audi’s open-top model line-up, which currently includes the TT Roadster, A5 Convertible, and R8 Spyder, will see the addition of an EV this decade. According to a report from German news agency dpa (via Suddeutsche Zeitung), Volkswagen Group is considering to increase the capacity utilization of the Volkswagen Osnabruck plant with electric convertible cars.
Former VW Group CEO Dr. Herbert Diess had suggested that the company is considering making Volkswagen’s underutilized vehicle factory a “niche convertible location.” He has said that both Volkswagen and Audi are mulling over the launch of an electric convertible.
In February 2022, Dr. Diess held an AMA session on Reddit. During the Reddit AMA, user linknewtab asked him about the progress of the VW ID.3 Cabriolet. “Working on a new idea,” the CEO responded, hinting that a different electric convertible (from the Volkswagen brand) is under consideration now. This model and the Audi electric convertible will likely be technical cousins.
Wiesmann Project Thunderball
The Wiesmann Project Thunderball is the company’s first electric sports car. Image Source: Wiesmann
The Wiesmann Project Thunderball is the brand’s first electric car. The German sports car maker has built the electric roadster on an aluminum spaceframe chassis and installed an 83 kWh battery pack operating at 800 volts in it. Two rear-mounted motors source energy from the battery pack and power the rear wheels. The motors produce 500 kW (670 hp) of combined power and 1,100 Nm (811 lb.-ft.) of combined torque.
The Thunderball is 4,440 mm (174.8 in.) long, 2,210 mm (87.0 in.) wide (incl. mirrors), and 1,285 mm (50.6 in.) tall and has a 2,595 mm (102.2 in.) wheelbase. It has a curb weight of 1,775 kg (3,913 lbs.) and a front/rear weight distribution ratio of 48:52.
The Thunderball accelerates from 0 to 62 mph in just 2.9 seconds, and its targeted range is 500 km or 311 miles (presumably as per WLTP) on a full charge. Thanks to an 800-volt system voltage, it’s possible to charge the car at up to 300 kW. Fast-charging the battery pack from 0 to 80% SoC on direct current takes less than half an hour. A 22 kW onboard charger allows fast charging on alternating current at home. Production will take place at the company’s existing factory in Dulmen, Germany.
Price: The Project Thunderball has a starting price of EUR 300,000 (USD 319,536). It is available to reserve with a deposit of EUR 3,000 (USD 3,195).
Mercedes-AMG electric convertible
The Vision AMG’s production version will likely be a niche car appealing to customers in select markets but an important brand builder. Image Source: Mercedes-Benz Group
Mercedes-AMG’s electric vehicle line-up is likely to include a convertible, Mercedes-Benz Group CTO Markus Schäfer has suggested. Speaking to TopGear in September 2021, Schäfer said that building a good-looking electric convertible is not easy and the demand for roadsters and convertibles is falling, but such a model could be an attractive product, an emotional one that builds the brand. The company has to start thinking “and engineer an EV in the form of a roadster,” the CTO said. Mercedes-AMG will “definitely think about a (zero-emission) cabriolet as well,” he added.
Release date: Expected in 2026
Price: Upwards of $200,000
Chevrolet Corvette electric convertible
A convertible version could be a significant contributor to the Chevrolet Corvette electric’s sales when it comes out in 2025. Image Source: GM
On April 25, 2022, General Motors confirmed the Chevrolet Corvette electric (all-electric) version via its Twitter handle. The company didn’t offer details but said that the zero-emission model would follow the hybrid version.
A Chevrolet Corvette electric convertible is almost certain to be a part of the new family, as it is a popular body style choice for Corvette customers. Harlan Charles, the Corvette’s product manager, gave a presentation at the National Corvette Museum during the “What’s New with Corvette” seminar (NCM Bash held between April 28-30, 2022), as reported by CorvetteBlogger.com.
The ‘2022 Options’ slide of his presentation confirmed that 48% of the Corvette C8 units produced of the MY2022 (as of April 4, 2022) were convertibles. Harlan promptly noted that Convertibles haven’t accounted for such a high percentage of Corvette production since the 1968 model year! According to a report Autocar published in March 2022, the Corvette convertible is one of the best-selling convertibles in history, alongside names like the Mazda MX-5 and MGB Roadster.
Release date: Expected in 2025
Price: Upwards of $100,000
Fisker Project Ronin
Thanks to its tri-motor all-wheel-drive layout, the Fisker Project Ronin is expected to have incredible grip and off-the-line acceleration. Image: Henrik Fisker (via Instagram)
After the Fisker Ocean and the Pear, a four-seater sports GT is in the pipeline from the American startup company. CEO Henrik Fisker posted computer-generated images of the upcoming electric convertible car, and it looks striking. The four-door, four-seater convertible, was first showcased with a fixed roof, and then in another Instagram post, Henrik Fisker revealed the convertible body style.
The target range for the Fisker Ronin is 600 miles, while 0-60 mph acceleration time would be close to 2 seconds. Thanks to its tri-motor all-wheel-drive layout, the Fisker Project Ronin is expected to have incredible grip and off-the-line acceleration.
The CEO also revealed that the prototype would be showcased in August 2023. Expect the production version to be showcased sometime in 2024. According to the CEO, the Fisker Project Ronin price would be under USD 200,000.
Release date: 2024
Price: Upwards of $150,000
Maserati MC20 ‘Cielo’ Folgore
The Maserati MC20 Cielo Folgore (rendered) should borrow the GranTurismo EV’s tri-motor powertrain.
The Maserati MC20 Cielo Folgore will be the brand’s first electric convertible supercar. Maserati Vehicle Line Executive Federico Landini has revealed to Auto Express that an MC20 electric is in the pipeline, and it will debut as a ‘Cielo’ or a convertible. A coupe version will arrive at a later stage.
The electric variant of the MC20 Cielo may have subtle exterior changes, such as a closed front grille with shiny vertical slats that look richer, redesigned front bumper, modified rear air intakes, and masked wheels, as reflected in our render (above).
The MC20 Cielo Folgore will sport the same tri-motor powertrain as the GranTurismo Folgore, although the tuning could be significantly different. Two individual motors would propel each rear wheel, and the front wheels would share a less potent motor, creating an e-AWD layout. The MC20 electric convertible should draw over 560 kW (751 hp) and 1,350 Nm (996 lb.-ft.) from these motors. Expect a 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) acceleration time of around two seconds and a top speed of over 320 km/h (199 mph) with this setup.
Release date: 2024
Price: $250,000+
Porsche 718 Boxster Electric
Pictured is TopElectricSUV’s Porsche 718 Boxster Electric rendering.
The Porsche 718 Boxster EV program has been approved, and it’s heading to dealerships by the middle of the decade. Porsche informed investors in the prospectus for its IPO on September 19, 2022, that it is investing in the Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen plant in preparation for the launch of the 718 Boxster Electric. In November 2022, spy photographers caught an early prototype undergoing road testing.
The test mule appeared to have a longer wheelbase, which could be an essential upgrade over the gas-powered current Boxster to clear up room for a battery pack similar to the Porsche Mission R’s 82 kWh unit. The final design should be taking shape in Building 100 – a high-security facility beneath Porsche’s top-secret design studio in Weissach, Germany. The battery pack could be behind the passenger cell to mimic the weight distribution of a mid-engined Porsche. We expect more details on the EV sports car next year.

Rolls-Royce Spectre Convertible
Our exclusive rendering shows how the Rolls-Royce Spectre Convertible with its roof folded down may look.
A zero-emissions open top Rolls-Royce isn’t wild speculation! The Spectre is the spiritual successor to the Phantom Coupé, which had a convertible sibling, the Phantom Drophead Coupé. Thus, Rolls-Royce should introduce a convertible version of the Spectre in the coming years to fill the whitespace.
The Rolls-Royce Spectre Convertible should have nearly the same dimensions as the coupe, which is 214.7 in. long, 81.9 in. wide, and 61.4 in. tall. A long tail treatment could be technically possible, but Goodwood may save the tricks for a dramatic special edition or a future one-off. With a curb weight of 2,975 kg (6,559 lbs.), the Spectre is noticeably heavy, and the Convertible will likely be heavier from the roof’s folding mechanism.
The Spectre Convertible should share the same powertrain, generating 430 kW (576 hp) and 900 Nm (664 lb.-ft.) of torque. A 0-60 mph sprint could take around 4.5 seconds. The battery pack will likely be repurposed, but while the Spectre has a WLTP range of 323 miles (preliminary), the Spectre Convertible’s WLTP range could be around 310 miles due to its weight and aero compromises.
Release Date: By 2025
