Having a small bedroom doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice on style.

There are tons of easy ways to make a small room feel bigger, and today we’re going to look at how to maximize space when decorating a small bedroom!

RELATED: 15 WAYS TO MAKE A SMALL ROOM LOOK BIGGER

This month we started a “mini-makeover” for our master bedroom and you can see the plans for it here or the progress here.

I’ve discovered that I thrive on change, and since it had been over 3 years since we’d decorated that space in our home I was more than ready for a little refresh! 😉

Our room isn’t large by any means – it’s about 12′ x 14′ – meaning there isn’t room for a lot of extra furniture and I’ve worked hard to create a design that maximizes it’s style while staying on a tight budget. (We’re doing the whole room for under $300!)

I hope these simple small bedroom decorating ideas on a budget help you get your small bedroom decorated both stylishly and affordably!

SIMPLE SMALL BEDROOM DECORATING IDEAS ON A BUDGET

While each of these ideas can be used on their own, I’d encourage you to try 3-5 of them to really transform your space!

Create the Feeling of Space

1. Low Bed

Shorter bed frames like platform beds give the appearance of a more space and can be quite affordable because you don’t necessarily need a box spring!

2. Open Frame Nightstands

Using nightstands with an open base give the space an airier, more open feel.

Don’t be afraid to use accent tables for nightstands either! We got these gold metal accent tables from HomePop to use as our nightstands and they’re perfect for our room. I love their geometric bases and round mirrored tops!

3. Floor-to-Ceiling Curtains

Install long curtains that extend from the floor all the way to the ceiling. The long fabric drapes will create the illusion of taller ceilings and add softness to the space.

My favorite low-cost options for curtains are DIY drop cloth curtains. Click here to read my full no-sew tutorial!

4. Mirrors

Mirrors reflect light and help make a small bedroom feel larger.

Try a floor-standing mirror for dressing, a wall mirror for accessories and on your nightstands for added dimension.

Use Color

5. Accent Wall

Painting a deep, dark-colored accent wall adds depth to a small bedroom. Try this behind your bed or on a wall with a window.

6. Light Paint

On all the other walls, use a light-colored paint that is bright and airy. I prefer white (or close to white) but even pale colors would work.

7. White Bedding

Having a white comforter, quilt or duvet on your bed is an instant way to add brightness to an otherwise dark and small bedroom.

And just because you have white bedding doesn’t mean you can’t add color to your bed with pillows and throws!

Move Things Up

8. Bunk Beds

While I couldn’t employ this idea in my master bedroom, I think bunk beds or loft beds are a FABULOUS way to take advantage of space in a small room.

We installed a loft bed in my son’s room and are able to store all of his LEGOs and his DIY LEGO Table under his bed – it’s amazing!

9. Mounted Lamps

Gain space on your nightstands by mounting lamps next to or above your bed. Be sure to screw them into a stud or use drywall anchors so they’re stable!

10. Wall Shelves

Don’t have room for a bookcase but want to store books? Install a few wall shelves above a desk, vanity or dresser to take advantage of the lost space above your furniture.

11. Wall Hooks

Have a large blank wall you’re looking to fill? Hang a row of hooks along it to get items off the floor and up out of the way!

Strategic Furniture

12. Tall Dresser

Rather than using a large or long dresser, choose to use a tall, narrow dresser for your clothes storage. This allows it to tuck into small corners and creates more room for other furniture in your room.

13. Small Bench

Don’t have room for an accent chair in your room? Add a small bench to the end of your bed for easy sitting.

Need more storage? Try a storage ottoman!

14. Cornered Bed

If you don’t mind only having one nightstand or side table, try putting your bed in the corner! This allows for much more of the floor space to be available for other things.

One recommendation I have is making sure you have a headboard that defines the “head” of your bed. 🙂

15. Corner Desk or Vanity

Other items you may want to have that do well in the corner are a desk or vanity. Placing them in the corner takes up the least amount of space while giving you two times as much desktop space!

Maximize Storage

16. Hidden Pet Bed

Have a large pet bed like us? We built a simple DIY hidden dog bed frame to slide it under the bed during the day! (I’ll have a tutorial for this on the blog soon!)

17. Store Under the Bed

You don’t have to have a designated “storage bed” to maximize the storage underneath your bed frame. Grab long, short totes and store seasonal clothes, books or other items in them to use the space under your bed for storage.

18. Organized Closets

I recently went through the process of decluttering and organizing my closet, and boy does it make a difference!

With a small bedroom, every single square inch of space is valuable, so make sure your closet is well organized and the storage is maximized.

19. Focal Point

Create a spot for the eye to focus on when entering the room – this could be an accent wall (like discussed above) a large headboard, even a piece of art.

The benefit of a focal point is it draws the eye away from other things in the room and gives a feeling of inviting the person in.

20. Cozy Throw Pillows

Having patterned or fun throw pillows on your bed gives the space flair without making it feel cluttered.

21. Plants or Greenery

Plants are an excellent way to add calmness to a room. I mean, who doesn’t feel calmer and more at ease out in the wilderness, right?

Be sure to check out my list of 40 indoor houseplants that don’t need sunlight if you’re just getting started with indoor plants.

22. Soft Rugs

Like I’ve said, time and time again, faux fur rugs are the best. They are a simple way to add coziness and style to a space, and they’re really affordable too!

Ok, now that we’ve discussed each of these ideas in detail, let’s review in list form for everyone that’s a list person like me. 😉
