The tournament was moved from December 2020 to February this year due to the hectic fixture schedule all around the world caused by the coronavirus pandemic, but will still be regarded as the 2020 FIFA Club World Cup (CWC) in the history books.

Bayern Munich lifted the trophy to complete a historic sextuple after beating Tigres UNAL 1-0 in the final, becoming only the second side in football history to claim six trophies in a year, matching the magnificent achievement of Pep Guardiola’s FC Barcelona from 2009.

Robert Lewandowski won the Man of the Match award in both of Bayern’s matches at the tournament after scoring both goals in the semi-final against Al Ahly and setting up Benjamin Pavard’s winner in the final.

As a consequence, it will not surprise many that the Poland international capped off a superb 12 months by being named the Club World Cup Player of the Tournament, lifting the prestigious Golden Ball.

One award that eluded Lewandowski, though, is the CWC Golden Boot for the top goalscorer at the tournament, with Andre-Pierre Gignac having netted three goals for Tigres UNAL in Qatar.

Hosts Al Duhail won the FIFA Fair Play award and Pitso Mosimane’s Al Ahly secured third spot at the showpiece, becoming only the fourth African side to bring back a medal from the Club World Cup – the others being Al Ahly themselves in 2006 (third), TP Mazembe in 2010 (second) and Raja Club Athletic in 2013 (second).
