University of Missouri-Columbia – Coulter Translational Partnership Program
In 2012, after a rigorous selection process, the Wallace H. Coulter Foundation chose the University of Missouri as one of only 16 academic institutions in the country to receive the prestigious Coulter Translational Partnership designation. The Program provides annual funding to biomedical engineering projects that meet genuine healthcare needs and represent viable business opportunities. Winning projects are selected by a committee of industry experts, entrepreneurs and researchers.
Each year, Coulter-funded teams tackle innovative projects – ranging from products that will increase how long organs can be stored before transplant, to new ways to rebuild damaged knee cartilage, to an app for assessing and monitoring tongue dysfunction caused by neurological disorders. So far, Coulter-funded projects have resulted in 2 industry licenses, $14.2 million in new grant funding and 13 startup companies.
Initially funded by the Coulter Foundation for five years, the Program is now supported by internal funds, grants and gifts. Departments also commit to returning a portion of future royalties from funded projects to the Coulter Program. The Program is administered by qualified professionals: director Cynthia Helphingstine has more than 30 years of experience creating and leading life science startups, and assistant director Jaya Ghosh is a bioengineer and inventor.
