Sword Art Online: 10 Things That Don't Make Sense About Alice

Alice is one of the central characters of the Alicization Arc in the Sword Art Online series. Unlike other characters who were thrust into the leading lady role alongside Kirito, Alice is a well-developed character. She goes through a few good character arcs and is far more than just a damsel to have by Kirito’s side.

She’s one of the better characters since her introduction. That said, she’s far from perfect and has more than a few parts of her personality and history that don’t make a whole lot of sense.

Breaking The Taboo Index As A Youth

A child accidentally breaking the Taboo Index would be reasonable, especially given how ridiculous some of the laws were. But the way Alice broke hers never made a whole lot of sense.

Not only did she enter the Dark Territory, if only briefly, but she did it to reach out to a dying Dark Knight after its battle with an Integrity Knight. Sure, she tripped and fell, but you would think a kid wouldn’t be trying to aid someone from the Dark Territory anyway.

Alice Believing That The Central Cathedral Was Ever Going To Let Her Go

At first, it’s understandable that she’d hold out hope that she could return to Kulid Village, even after she broke the Taboo Index. Anyone in her shoes would have, especially at that age, as hope is all you have in those situations.

When you stop to think about it, there was never any way they’d let someone leave who broke one of their absolute laws. It’d set awful precedent, and Quinella was all about having control. It’s why she turned Alice into an Integrity Knight after two years of studying the sacred arts.

Appearing As A Spirit To Help Kirito Heal Eugeo

On a whole, Sword Art Online has a few scenes like this where the spirit or memory of another character appears to help give Kirito the final push he needs to achieve whatever goals he’s after. In most cases, it’s pretty well done, but that isn’t the case here.

Alice appearing before Kirito as a spirit after Eugeo had gotten injured fighting goblins was fine. Her giving him enough life to heal Eugeo fully wasn’t. It felt hokey and didn’t make a whole lot of sense.

How Quickly She Realized Quinella Couldn’t Be Trusted

With the amount of effort that Quinella put into having absolute loyalty from not only the Integrity Knights but the entire human kingdom, it makes little sense that her attempts to suppress Alice’s feelings were undone so easily.

There never felt like a proper build where Alice slowly started to realize what Quinella had done to create her. All it took was the mention of Selka, and she broke down in tears, knowing that Quinella could no longer be trusted.

Siding With Kirito’s Plan After Seeing Him As No More Than A Criminal A Few Episodes Prior

Alice’s personality towards Kirito took such a rapid 180 after they stopped fighting that it felt rushed. A knight such as herself who was dedicated to bringing justice to criminals suddenly listening to Kirito as if they’d stayed friends all of these years was jarring.

While she certainly should have wanted to strike back at Quinella, siding with a wanted criminal on the drop of a dime seems like such a rash decision that isn’t fitting of a character like her.

Speaking With Bercouli When He Was Frozen

Moments or scenes are at times born from utter convenience in Sword Art Online, and this is one of them. Bercouli and Alice needed to speak with each other, to bond as only Integrity Knights can.

Alice needed to hear that he was proud of her for breaking past the seal on her right eye, something even he couldn’t do. It’s a good scene, but one that makes no sense seeing how Bercouli is frozen both before Alice arrives and immediately after he says what he needs to say.

Why Her AI Differs From Yui

Yui was one of the first AI programs that made a bond with the main cast of characters. She was a program that acted as Kirito and Asuna’s kid and generally acted as you would expect of a program.

Alice was different because she was made from a fluctlight or a human soul, but they should still essentially work the same way. Alice naturally has more choice in matters, however, she still should think as a program would considering she lacks more than bits and pieces of memories.

The Split Between Alice Zuberg & Alice Synthesis Thirty As Separate Characters

Given that Alice is a fluctlight built off the personality of a human, it makes some sense that they would be two different people. The issue is it’s hard to separate the two as their personalities are so similar.

Alice Synthesis Thirty carrying over many of the same traits as her younger counterpart, even holding some of her memories. It muddles what’s an otherwise great character arc as Alice tries to discover who or what she is.

Falling In Love With Kirito

In terms of an actual story, her feelings for Kirito do make some amount of sense given what they’ve been through together. They’ve been linked together for nearly her entire time in the story. The problem is that it’s been done before, many times now.

Every new female character that gets introduced seems to fall for Kirito in some way. With how Alice’s personality was, her being the lone exception would have been nice, especially over going down the same story path others already have.

Fighting With Asuna Over Kirito

Despite a few slip-ups, Alice’s character had been pretty incredible until she started to grow feelings for Kirito. That was already touched on but doesn’t encompass the whole problem.

Reducing Alice into a fangirl who would fight for Kirito against a potential rival never made sense given her character. It made even less sense when the fact they are at war with the Dark Territory is brought into play. The two battling over Kirito was completely out of place.
