Best Affordable Hearing Aids Of 2023, According To Audiologists
The price of hearing aids varies depending on where they’re purchased, whether they’re prescription or over-the-counter (OTC) devices, what features they include and whether they’re bundled with additional audiology services and warranties.
The average cost of prescription hearing aids often ranges anywhere from $4,000 to $8,000 for a pair. These prices may include the cost of the hearing aids and the professional fitting, follow-up appointments, any necessary maintenance and batteries, so be sure to ask what’s included with your overall purchase before you buy.
The average price of OTC hearing aids for adults with mild to moderate hearing loss is generally lower than that of prescription hearing aids because they don’t require appointments with a hearing professional. Certain OTC hearing aids can be purchased for under $1,000 a pair, though some of these more inexpensive devices aren’t true hearing aids (they’re known as personal sound amplification products).
“OTC hearing aids are often less expensive, although some still [cost] hundreds of dollars,” says Melissa Schnitzspahn, Au.D., audiology manager and clinical audiologist at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center. “I have seen some as much as $500 [per aid].”
With that said, she notes that OTC devices are generally less expensive because they’re meant to be self-selected and self-fitted—an advantage budget-wise, but there are downsides to this approach. “They would not have the same customization, warranty for repairs or follow-up services that a traditional hearing aid fitted by an audiologist would,” she points out.
Does Insurance Cover Hearing Aids?
You might be able to find some financial assistance to help pay for hearing aids. “Many—although not all—insurance companies have some hearing aid benefit for traditional hearing aids,” says Dr. Schnitzspahn. However, they’re not usually covered in full.
For eligible individuals, Medicaid might help pay for the diagnosis and treatment of hearing loss, including hearing aids. Some states have early intervention programs or children’s health insurance programs that may cover hearing aids as well.
Medicare doesn’t cover the cost of hearing aids for older adults, although diagnostic evaluations ordered by a physician may be covered depending on your plan.
