Tips & tricks for saving on accommodation
But before we dive into the list of affordable hotels in Seoul, here are a few tips & tricks for saving on accommodation, no matter where you are traveling to.
Travel in less popular seasons
While South Korea is a year-round destination, many people might choose to visit during spring and fall, and less so during winter or the rainy season. Thus, chances are accommodation prices will be less expensive during these seasons.
Also, you will want to avoid popular holidays, such as Chuseok or the Lunar New Year.
Avoid traveling during the weekend
Of course, if you are spending two or three weeks in Korea that wouldn’t be possible, but if you are only looking to spend up to 5 days in Seoul, you should avoid the weekend.
Rent for longer
When you can, plan to spend a longer time in one place and rent an apartment. By doing so, you can save on the price of accommodation.
Book in advance online and take advantage of various offers
Popular accommodation sites will have plenty of offers throughout the year, all you have to do is pay attention and book when the time is right.
By booking online, you will also have the peace of mind of knowing you have a place booked. Moreover, most accommodation options offer the flexibility of free cancellation, in case something comes up and your plans change.
Stay in less popular areas
Sure, everyone wants to stay in the center of the city, within walking distance to the main attractions. However, that also comes with a higher price tag.
Move a bit further way from the city center, stay in less popular areas, well connected to tourist attractions by public transportation, and you will save.
Seoul’s map & neighborhoods
Let’s look at Seoul and its neighborhoods:By 안우석 – Own work, CC BY-SA 4.0
The main areas of Seoul are called “gu”s or districts, and there are 25 of those. Every “gu” is divided into “dongs” or neighborhoods.
Also, the city is split into 2 parts by the Han River: the northern part and the southern part of town.
Staying anywhere around Jung-gu or Yongsan-gu will cost you more. If you want to save on accommodation in Seoul, look at Mapo-gu, and even Dongdaemun-gu.
