What is electric infrared wallpaper and how could it heat UK homes?
The latest technology in home heating is making its way to the UK, as company NexGen introduces electric infrared wallpaper.
In a recent report by BBC discussing the benefits of electric infrared wallpaper, many argue it is a great alternative to traditional UK heating systems and radiators. With the recent cost of living crisis, many British households looking for ways to reduce their utility costs.
NexGen promises to have the answer with its all-new wallpaper-based heating system.

What is electric infrared wallpaper?
As the name suggests, electric infrared wallpaper is an electric-based insulation system installed behind wallpaper in a house.
Thin strips of metallic sheets are placed behind the plasterboard of a house. These strips are then hooked up to the mains of the house’s electricity, emitting heat via infrared waves.
British homes are often exposed to dampness and mold. The electric infrared wallpaper works to reduce this through the way its heating system operates. The removal of radiators also allows for more space in a home.
The possible future of UK home heating
The new-age heating technique works by heating up solid objects within a room, unlike a central radiator heating system found in most UK households. Radiators work by heating up the air in a room, which then circulates around raising the overall temperature.
Radiators in a central heating system also usually rely on gas. Electricity, due to its renewable sources, is a less harmful power option.
Dubbed “The Future Of Heating” NexGen’s latest in heating technology can expand beyond wallpapers, into floors and ceilings. According to Octopus Energy, the heating system is far less prone to losing heat from gaps in insulation and draughts, as well as reaching warmer temperatures quickly.

Of course, electric infrared wallpaper is just one of the suggested greener heating alternatives. Air heating pumps are also seeing a rise in use as some people opt for an alternative when facing rising bills.
Currently, fewer than 50,000 are fitted in UK homes annually. This makes the UK among the lowest in heat pump installation numbers in comparison to the rest of Europe.
